Aodhán Ó Ríordáin: 235. To ask the Minister for Housing, Planning, and Local Government if he is aware that a single person earning €57,000 gross , or €41,500 net, does not qualify for a one bed unit in a Land Development Agency cost rental scheme and yet is also excluded from social tenancy given the €40,000 income threshold; and the action he will take to remediate the situation. International Court of Justice and Genocide in Gaza: Motion [Private Members] (30 Jan 2024)

Aodhán Ó Ríordáin: It is very hard to know where to start, considering we had a similar debate last week. It is true what the Tánaiste said, in that in the international community, Ireland is viewed as one of the most critical voices of Israeli aggression. When one lives in Ireland, one can only influence what one can with regard to the Government's response. Ireland may be going further than anyone...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Public Transport (21 Sep 2023)

Aodhán Ó Ríordáin: ...that scenario. I therefore ask the Minister of State to impress on his colleague the need to make representations to Irish Rail so that it would, in turn, make representations to Richmond Homes to acquire the land the stairwell is on in order that it can be maintained in a much more appropriate fashion.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: An Garda Síochána (25 May 2023)

Aodhán Ó Ríordáin: ...where gardaí dealt with a situation in the way they saw fit but it still ended up with people's homes being burned out. The international reaction to this is to look at what is happening in Ireland and state this is what the Irish are doing. The Irish are all over the world speaking about their emigration story, but when it comes to people who come to their land looking for...

Planning and Rural Housing: Motion [Private Members] (10 May 2023)

Aodhán Ó Ríordáin: ...discussion on this at our parliamentary party meeting yesterday, in the log cabin suggestion, which is one that is worthy of investigation. I will say this much about the planning system in Ireland; I remind Deputies that there was a period in Ireland where developers were able to buy the votes of councillors to rezone land. In my constituency and throughout rural Ireland, there are...

Select Committee on Justice and Equality: Estimates for Public Services 2023
Vote 20 - An Garda Síochána (Revised)
Vote 21 - Prisons (Revised)
Vote 22 - Courts Service (Revised)
Vote 24 - Justice (Revised)
Vote 41 - Policing Authority (Revised)
Vote 44 - Data Protection Commission (Revised)
(14 Feb 2023)

Aodhán Ó Ríordáin: I know that education services come under the Department of Education, but still they are linked with prisons in that education in prisons goes on an academic timetable. Therefore, if you were to land in a prison in July or August, you would not be able to access education services until the new academic year. Is there a way of changing that?

Written Answers — Department of Education and Skills: Schools Building Projects (8 Nov 2022)

Aodhán Ó Ríordáin: 549. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills the status of the land next to Clongriffin DART station, which is earmarked as a school site; and the current plans, if any, for a school at that site. [54469/22]

Regulated Professions (Health and Social Care) (Amendment) Bill 2022: Second Stage: Waste Management (15 Sep 2022)

Aodhán Ó Ríordáin: ...has been in the general Darndale area for a number of years has come to a head. It has gone completely out of control. I visited the dump during the week with my colleague, Councillor Alison Gilliland, and was stunned by what I saw. There has always been a commercial dump, which has been an issue raised constantly with the city council, but now, possibly because of Covid but definitely...

Rent Reduction Bill 2022: Second Stage [Private Members] (13 Jul 2022)

Aodhán Ó Ríordáin: ...still has not been designated a rent protection zone. It is not too late for the Government to take some action. Tax rates on speculators need to rise rapidly. The calls for rent relief for landlords already enjoying record rent levels must be firmly rejected. The State needs to take on those engaged in land hoarding and speculation. Use must be made of compulsory purchase orders, the...

Education (Provision in Respect of Children with Special Educational Needs) Bill 2022: Committee and Remaining Stages (6 Jul 2022)

Aodhán Ó Ríordáin: ...and having regard to any information provided to the Council by the Minister in relation to any planned additional provision of education for children with special educational needs and available lands and buildings, the Council remains of the opinion that there is insufficient capacity in an area for the provision of education to children with special educational needs, it shall prepare...

Autism Bill 2022: First Stage (23 Jun 2022)

Aodhán Ó Ríordáin: ...of Employment Affairs and Social Protection did not want it because it related to disabilities. The Department of Health did not want it because it said it related to employment. In the end, it landed into the Department of Justice. There must be a best practice model of service delivery, assessment, diagnosis and intervention for service users with autism drawing on international...

Written Answers — Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht: Sports Facilities (24 Feb 2022)

Aodhán Ó Ríordáin: ...ask the Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht her views on the potential of Government to fund local authority-run community playing fields; if she will consider funding to purchase such land; and if her Department will fund the construction and fit-out of such facilities. [10149/22]

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Citizens' Assembly (3 Feb 2022)

Aodhán Ó Ríordáin: ...of every political party. We passed radical legislation on the provision of an injecting centre. While it has been objected to, it remains law that we can establish an injecting facility in Ireland. That legislation was passed without a single objection from any Member of in this House. No one in these Houses is standing on a war-on-drugs platform or saying we need to have zero...

Residential Tenancies (Tenants' Rights) Bill 2021: Second Stage [Private Members] (22 Sep 2021)

Aodhán Ó Ríordáin: ...all wonder where is the priority of Government. Whom in the housing market is it actually trying to protect? There is no equivalence between the danger that the renter faces and the danger that a landlord faces. I wish the Tánaiste and Taoiseach would realise this. It is a bit like when we have the debates on low pay and workers' rights. My colleague, Deputy Nash, will conclude...

Land Development Agency Bill 2021: Second Stage (17 Feb 2021)

Aodhán Ó Ríordáin: ...support for aspects of it, and will use this debate as an opportunity to consider how best we can collectively amend the Bill so that we can legislate for an LDA which will do what the people of Ireland need it to do. Let us remind ourselves of why we are here and what problem this Bill is intended to solve. We are in the middle of a crisis involving housing, homelessness, social...

Covid-19: Motion [Private Members] (10 Feb 2021)

Aodhán Ó Ríordáin: If the Minister succeeds in his endeavour to drive down the virus and rid this land of Covid-19, we will all succeed and we can all go back to the type of human relationships and interactions all of us have been sorely missing. It is now February. In January, we lost more than 1,000 people to this virus. We had more infections in January than we had in 2020 so clearly a new strategy is...

Response of the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage to Covid-19: Statements (28 Jan 2021)

Aodhán Ó Ríordáin: ...practical things I would ask the Minister to do to address this social housing and greater housing need in Dublin Bay North. First, I ask him to work with my colleague, Councillor Alison Gilliland, and the cross-party working group in Dublin City Council, which is coming up with a new plan to deliver housing on the Oscar Traynor Road site. Second, I ask that the Department would pay for...

Planning and Development Bill 2020 [Seanad]: Committee and Remaining Stages (16 Dec 2020)

Aodhán Ó Ríordáin: ...an underappreciation on the part of the citizens of that city or county of how significant it is. The Minister will know that one of the few functions of real power a councillor has is to rezone land. The development plan is the overarching plan for a city, within which it is very difficult to get a planning application, or it is what planners in each individual county or city will refer...

Ministerial Power (Repeal) (Ban Co-Living and Build to Rent) Bill 2020: Second Stage [Private Members] (20 Oct 2020)

Aodhán Ó Ríordáin: ...a shiver down the spine of many Dubliners because of the muscle memory evoked by that word and where our families came from and how we lived. We improved on it. We built public housing on public land and we moved away from this type of accommodation. Now, in my constituency and in the area from where our housing spokesperson, Senator Rebecca Moynihan, comes, co-living proposals are...

Brexit and Business: Statements (7 Oct 2020)

Aodhán Ó Ríordáin: ...what business and Europe can do for ordinary people, including workers. I am sure the Tánaiste shares my party's concern over potential export losses to the tune of €18 billion in respect of the UK land bridge. Eighteen billion euro is 40% of our entire export revenue. About 150,000 trucks are involved. The Tánaiste and many others who watch these matters carefully...
