Obviously, it is a difficult and challenging issue....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Foreign Affairs Council: Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade (25 Nov 2015)

Pat Breen: I will not comment on that issue. An issue discussed before the Minister came into the committee room was the EU measures taken recently on the labelling of goods from the territories occupied by Israel. Pat Breen: ...I, as Chairman, and other members of the Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade have taken a keen interest in issues relating to the Middle East, in particular, the situation in Palestine and Israel, over the past three and a half years. For example, in September last, the committee met both ambassadors for four hours in public session and today we revisited the issue. It has been...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Palestine and Israel: Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel (10 Dec 2014)

Pat Breen: ...witnesses think of the new EU policy guidelines being worked out at present with regard to the labelling of goods from settlements so they are not misrepresented to consumers as having come from Israel? Is work ongoing at EU level in this regard? Is this a first step with regard to what the witnesses are proposing?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Palestine and Israel: Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel (10 Dec 2014)

Pat Breen: We have had a very good interactive debate between committee members and the witnesses. It is good to differ, challenge and ask questions. It is important to probe what is happening in Israel at present. I thank the witnesses for coming before the committee.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Palestine and Israel: Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel (10 Dec 2014)

Pat Breen: We have been there a number of times. We went there last year. First of all, I went to Gaza and Israel with the then leader of the Opposition, An Taoiseach, Deputy Enda Kenny, and Deputies Billy Timmins and Alan Shatter. The committee has gone on a number of occasions. We went last year to the refugee camps in Jordan. We think Jordan has an important role to play in the peace process....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Palestine and Israel: Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel (10 Dec 2014)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Palestine and Israel: Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel (10 Dec 2014)

Pat Breen: In terms of the non-recognition of Israel, does Ms Minch think this is an obstacle in moving the peace process forward? On a dialogue with Hamas, I agree with her.

Pat Breen: We are meeting in public session with representatives of the Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel, EAPPI. In the past, the committee has met the representatives and we have great respect for their work. That is why we are meeting them. We will hear the representatives' opening statement before having a questions and answers session with the members. Ms Jenny...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Situation in Syria and Middle East: Dr. Nader Hashemi (19 Nov 2014)

Pat Breen: ...of me not to ask Dr. Hashemi a general question. As he is director of international studies in the University of Denver, I ask him to comment on the Middle East process and the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians. Where does he envisage it going in the future? I am sure members would like to hear his views on it.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Situation in Gaza - Middle East Peace Process: Palestinian and Israeli Ambassadors (3 Sep 2014)

Pat Breen: Before asking Deputy Smith to speak, I ask members to adhere to the same format. It is questions, not Second Stage speeches. Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Situation in Gaza - Middle East Peace Process: Palestinian and Israeli Ambassadors (3 Sep 2014)

Pat Breen: I thank the ambassador for his statement. I have two questions before I bring in Deputy Smith. Reports from Israel today indicate that it may not send an envoy to Cairo to follow up on the ceasefire. Are those reports true? They are supposed to have come from Prime Minister Netanyahu. There are also other questions about the peace process and the US.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Middle East Situation: Ambassador of Iran to Ireland (9 Jul 2014)
