Garda Síochána (Amendment) (No. 3) Bill 2014: Second Stage (Resumed) (22 Jan 2015)

Derek Nolan: We are coming to the end of a very difficult time for the policing authorities in this country, namely An Garda Síochána and the Garda Síochana Ombudsman Commission, GSOC. The last two years have been full of controversies relating to penalty points and the relationship between the gardaí and the commission, which got so strained at one point that it led to public...

The chief executive of the RSA had meetings with Garda whistleblowers to discuss incidents he considered so important that he reported them to GSOC and the Comptroller and Auditor General. I would like to know if he also felt it was appropriate or if he was comfortable enough to report it to the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport.

Garda Inspectorate Report on the Fixed Charge Processing System: Statements (26 Mar 2014)

Derek Nolan: ...Síochána, this has been a particularly damaging time. Its reputation has been tarnished and its trust has been damaged by endless headlines, allegations, reports and perceptions, be they with regard to GSOC, whistleblowers, penalty points or, now, the taping of conversations in Garda stations. It is reported or suggested that perhaps Mill Street Garda Station in Galway could...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions: Security and Surveillance Issues: Minister for Justice and Equality (19 Feb 2014)

Derek Nolan: ...ask about, that being, the information upon which the ombudsman commission engaged a public interest investigation. He stated that there was no evidence of Garda involvement. Does he believe that GSOC was wrong to begin that public interest investigation? My second question is on the leak. From what GSOC stated last week, it is clear that only six or seven people knew that an internal...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions: Security and Protocol Issues: Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (12 Feb 2014)

Derek Nolan: ...that you are pursuing? Second, how can you assure people who may have left sensitive information with you, or who may left have private, secret documents, as this report was labelled, with the GSOC, that the information is secure and they will not be reading about it in a Sunday newspaper shortly?
