Other Questions: Defence Forces Medicinal Products (26 Jan 2016)

Simon Coveney: ...what comes out of that but we also have to ensure we look at our own systems, whether in having a screening process or in ensuring we follow the best medical advice on prescribing the appropriate drug for the appropriate region and the appropriate strain of malaria. We try to manage risk as best we can when our Defence Forces personnel are going abroad, particularly on missions to...

Other Questions: Defence Forces Medicinal Products (26 Jan 2016)

Simon Coveney: ...on the subject of Lariam, I go back to my Department and ask them to help me understand why people are concerned in this regard, what the issues are and how we screen people before we prescribe the drugs. Lariam is not suitable for some people, so I ask how we ensure those people are not prescribed Lariam and do not go to certain missions that may be in a malaria zone but go instead to...

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Defence Forces Medicinal Products (26 Jan 2016)

Simon Coveney: ...for a shorter period. The numbers are much lower. For example, when I visited Mali last year and took anti-malarial medication, I was only there for two days and Lariam was not the appropriate drug. I had been to sub-Saharan Africa for a longer period and I took Lariam. Depending on how long a person stays, some drugs are taken daily while some are taken weekly. Therefore, one manages...

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Defence Forces Medicinal Products (26 Jan 2016)

Simon Coveney: ...do not have large numbers of Defence Forces personnel in sub-Saharan Africa at the moment, but that is not the point. The point is that if the recommendation is that Lariam is the most appropriate drug for a region to which we are sending Defence Forces personnel, then of course there is a screening process. I have had long and detailed meetings with the Defence Forces and the Department...

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Defence Forces Medicinal Products (26 Jan 2016)

Simon Coveney: We do not prescribe Lariam as the first drug of choice. We look at a region and we take the best possible medical advice on the most appropriate drug for the region, depending on how long people will stay and the strain of malaria in the region. It is also not true to say that the UK and the US have abandoned Lariam. They have not.

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Defence Forces Medicinal Products (26 Jan 2016)

Simon Coveney: ...basis of court cases or anything like that. My only issue here is to do what is best for Irish soldiers who are serving in areas where malaria is a problem. There are, effectively, three malaria drugs, as far as I am aware. The medical advice that is available to me and to the Defence Forces will determine what drug is prescribed for the Defence Forces personnel going to different...

Written Answers — Department of Defence: Defence Forces Medicinal Products (21 Jan 2016)

Simon Coveney: As the Deputy will be aware, there are three anti-malarial drugs in use by the Defence Forces namely Lariam (mefloquine), Malarone and Doxycycline. The choice of medication is a medical decision made by Medical Officers in the Defence Forces having regard to the specific circumstances of the mission and the individual member of the Defence Forces. I can advise the Deputy that, since 2001,...

The Deputy might note that the Defence Forces purchase pharmaceuticals on a demand basis. The purchasing policy is governed by the number of prescriptions presented, and for the individual overseas deployments. Currently, a small quantity of...

Simon Coveney: I refer to previous Parliamentary Questions requesting a breakdown of anti-malaria drugs prescribed to Irish troops operating in sub-Saharan Africa in 2015. Select Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Horse Racing Ireland Bill 2015: Committee Stage (9 Dec 2015)

Simon Coveney: ...it is to be done, let it be done properly. Let us consider how the appropriate governance and regulatory bodies would work to promote integrity and to ensure the correct systems are in place for drug testing, welfare management, licensing and so on. Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Defence Forces Medicinal Products (24 Nov 2015)

Simon Coveney: ...generalisations. The United States decided to stop using Lariam for troops sent to Afghanistan. It depends on the region, where personnel are going and for how long, and the strain of malaria. All this is part of the medical assessment. The reason...
