Written Answers — Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Animal Welfare (24 Jan 2024)

Thomas Pringle: 170. To ask the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine his views on whether electronic training collars should be banned for dogs, as is being discussed by the Advisory Council for Companion Animal Welfare; whether they can be used as part of the management of dogs to protect against attacks; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3106/24]

An Bille um an Naoú Leasú is Tríocha ar an mBunreacht (Ceart Vótála ag Aois 16) 2021: An Dara Céim [Comhaltaí Príobháideacha] - Thirty-ninth Amendment of the Constitution (Right to Vote at 16) Bill 2021: Second Stage [Private Members] (23 Jun 2022)

Thomas Pringle: ...young people gain many rights and responsibilities in society. For example, they can leave school, seek full-time employment, be liable for tax, learn to drive, consent to medical procedures, get a dog licence and join the youth sections of political parties. They can have all these societal responsibilities but no say on how their society is run. We have seen voting extended to 16-...

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (31 May 2022)

Thomas Pringle: ...to the HSE at that time, and were in the available HSE files at Ard Gréine Court. I believe they were suppressed by management within the HSE at all levels, right up to the very top, and only for the dogged determination of the whistleblower, these journalists, myself and, thankfully, the Minister of State at the Department of Health, Deputy Rabbitte, all this would have been...

Written Answers — Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Animal Welfare (10 May 2022)

Thomas Pringle: 856. To ask the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine the laws that are in place to stop healthy dogs from being euthanised; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22804/22]

Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) (Amendment) Bill 2020: Second Stage (27 Jan 2021)

Thomas Pringle: That is fine. It is interesting to sit here in a debate to transpose EU legislation onto our Statute Book only to listen to a debate about the theft of dogs. When I heard this debate was coming up and it was being discussed earlier, I was thinking that it was not appropriate for this Bill. However, I then thought that the Government is going to have to show to Europe that we have...

Greyhound Industry: Motion [Private Members] (25 Nov 2020)

Thomas Pringle: ...work on the welfare of greyhounds in the previous Dáil. Maureen O’Sullivan and Tommy Broughan often raised the important issues of animal welfare and the treatment and export of greyhounds. Tommy Broughan worked with Dogs Trust Ireland to bring forward the Welfare of Greyhounds (Amendment) Bill 2017. The former Deputies and the now MEP, Clare Daly, worked with Senators...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Irish Greyhound Industry: Irish Coursing Club (17 Dec 2019)

Thomas Pringle: We had the IGB here a couple of weeks ago. Figures were provided at that meeting on the number of dogs that died at IGB events. Does Mr. Histon have figures on the number of dogs dying at coursing events? Does that happen? I note there is some correspondence between the ICC and the Department on hares that died through the coursing events. Are there any figures on deaths of dogs?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Issues Concerning Greyhound Industry: Bord na gCon (12 Nov 2019)

Thomas Pringle: I do not know a pile about greyhounds but I wonder about the racing greyhounds about which our guests spoke in their opening statement. If a bitch or a dog has a litter, there might be only one racing greyhound in the litter. Is the whole litter the responsibility of the board or is it just the racing dog? Our guests might explain how that works.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Issues Concerning Greyhound Industry: Bord na gCon (12 Nov 2019)

Thomas Pringle: If I am a breeder of racing greyhounds, I might have to breed 20 or 30 pups to get one dog that will race. Is the board interested only in that one such dog?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Issues Concerning Greyhound Industry: Bord na gCon (12 Nov 2019)

Thomas Pringle: ...to be increasing rather than declining. While it seems to be going a bit more slowly this year, the year is not yet finished. I do not know much about it but it seems extraordinary that so many dogs have died at only one track. I do know how many tracks there are in the country, perhaps 16, and Shelbourne is one of the busier ones. Would a death rate of 100 dogs a year be off the mark?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Issues Concerning Greyhound Industry: Bord na gCon (12 Nov 2019)

Thomas Pringle: Out of 10,000 dogs that started racing, four died.

Written Answers — Department of Rural and Community Development: Dog Breeding Industry (11 Jul 2019)

Thomas Pringle: 878. To ask the Minister for Rural and Community Development if a cap will be placed on the maximum number of animals permitted in dog breeding establishments; and if so, if the number will be checked going forward in view of the case of a person (details supplied). [31225/19]

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Engagement with Chairman-Designate of Bord na gCon. (23 Oct 2018)

Thomas Pringle: I am unusual in not having a clue about dog racing. There is no track close to my area. The track in Lifford is the only one in County Donegal and I think it is in bother. This might seem like a stupid question. Mr. Nyhan talked about the crisis being at the level of the tracks, race meetings and stuff like that, but according to the annual reports for 2014 to 2017, inclusive,...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: General Scheme of Greyhound Industry Bill 2017: Discussion (Resumed) (16 May 2017)

Thomas Pringle: ...to replace it with financial penalties. How do the witnesses feel about that? Do they believe penalties are adequate or that the criminal sanction should be retained for people who interfere with dogs? Last week when it was before the committee the ISPCA said its recommendation is that a bitch should have no more than five litters and the legislation proposes nine. Do the witnesses...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: General Scheme of Greyhound Industry Bill 2017: Discussion (Resumed) (9 May 2017)

Thomas Pringle: I thank the witnesses for their presentations. The recommendation on the export of dogs is sensible and should probably be included in the Bill. Obviously we only want to see dogs exported to countries with proper welfare standards. The ISPCA spoke about authorised officers, and the fact it is not authorised under the under the Welfare of Greyhounds Act 2011 but is authorised under the...

Nomination of Taoiseach (Resumed) (6 Apr 2016)

Thomas Pringle: ...together either but it gives us the opportunity to have a fundamentally different Government at some stage in the future. This comes down to the biggest difficulty in this process for Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael. The dogs in the street will say that there no difference policy-wise between Fine Gael or Fianna Fáil. The only difference is around personalities and a bit of history....

Electoral (Amendment) (Political Donations) Bill 2011: Second Stage (10 May 2011)

Thomas Pringle: ...the previous speaker quoting from the annual reports of the Standards in Public Office Commission in which, amazingly, even in 2009, neither party managed to declare any donations, when even the dogs in the street knew that money was coming in but they did not feel free to declare any of it. This Bill is probably a cynical exercise by Fianna Fáil to put forward this amendment to ensure...
