Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Renewable Energy Generation (16 May 2024)

David Stanton: ...the port needs up to €120 million to develop properly. With Doyle Shipping Group off the pitch now, it means there will be no facility on the south coast, unless the Port of Cork can get moving. Does the Minister of State agree? The Port of Cork needs Government support. Above all, it needs clarity and confidence pretty soon because time is running out. Talk of ISIF, the EIB...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Businesses: Discussion (15 May 2024)

David Stanton: We could talk about the impact on politics, which probably does not impact on the witnesses. This is being created by businesses in many ways. My good friend here could be portrayed as saying something terrible just before polling day. That would destroy his political career and he would not be able to do anything about it. The videos are so realistic. We need to start educating people...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Businesses: Discussion (15 May 2024)

David Stanton: ...other, dark side of this. No one country can actually deal with this. Do we need some kind of global, non-proliferation treaty type agreement to ensure, as best we can, that the real dark side does not emerge?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Foreign Affairs Council, UN Matters and Individually Tailored Partnership Programme with NATO: Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs (14 May 2024)

David Stanton: I thank the Tánaiste. Does he have an estimate of how many Irish citizens are living in Israel, Gaza, Lebanon and Ukraine?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Small Companies Administrative Rescue Process: Discussion (8 May 2024)

David Stanton: ...Those numbers seem quite large compared with the number of companies entering SCARP. Is it Ms O'Dea's view that more companies should avail of SCARP, looking at the large number of insolvencies? Does Ms O'Dea have any knowledge as to whether any of these companies that enter insolvency could have gone down the road of SCARP?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Small Companies Administrative Rescue Process: Discussion (8 May 2024)

David Stanton: We have the Bill on co-operatives going through as well, which gives us an opportunity to discuss that issue. I agree that there is scope there. Does anyone else wish to come in with another question?

Report of the Joint Committee on Enterprise, Trade and Employment: Motion (2 May 2024)

David Stanton: ...training and skills in health and safety, enterprise and electrical work are all needed. What also came across very well today was the importance of the environment and ensuring that what we do does not have a negative impact on the environment. That was stressed again and again, as were the relationship with the fishers and the role they play. This is not simple stuff. It is...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Flood Risk Management (2 May 2024)

David Stanton: I thank the Minister for that. I will again emphasise the fact that sea erosion and so on does not wait for studies. We are great in this country for having a study, but I do not think a study is needed. If you walk the actual beach, you can see what is needed; it needs protection. It needs an embankment to be put in place. We spend much time appointing consultants at huge expense to...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Role and Operation of the Health and Safety Authority: Discussion (1 May 2024)

David Stanton: Does the HSA work with other agencies such as Safe Electric with respect to the safe installation of these panels? As I said, in the UK between 2020 and 2021, there was a huge increase in the number of fire incidents. I do not think we will be any different here because it is expanding at a massive rate, which is good. However, we need to ensure the people installing them on farms, homes...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Role and Operation of the Health and Safety Authority: Discussion (1 May 2024)

David Stanton: ...who the installer is; it is not possible. In addition, some companies have been using the SEAI application instead of the Department of agriculture application and there are anomalies in that. Does looking at that kind of high-level carelessness come under the remit of the HSA?

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Renewable Energy Generation (30 Apr 2024)

David Stanton: ...Affairs and his Department to determine whether it would be possible to draw down some funding to allow the Port of Cork to proceed with its plans, which are the only game in town at the moment. If the work does not start by the last quarter of this year, the planning permission will run out and it will not be allowed to start. The other facility is off the table, so this is the only...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Childcare Services (30 Apr 2024)

David Stanton: ...up and running and ready to go, rather than establishing a board which would then have to spend more time getting to know the brief. Is there any way of advancing it or bringing it forward? Why does it take so long to actually get this up and running, seeing as it is such an important agency? The Indecon review was completed in 2021, which is quite a while ago, and yet now we are...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Childcare Services (30 Apr 2024)

David Stanton: ...we go forward? Is it going up or going down? Are there areas in the country that are red on the Department's map where the need will be fairly strong and other areas where the need falls? What does a childcare provider do when told the facilities being used can no longer be used? I have an example of this myself in the case of a small school where a childcare provider was told it would...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: The 50th Anniversary of Guaranteed Irish: Discussion (24 Apr 2024)

David Stanton: ...what is made in Ireland what is not made in Ireland and so on. That is a bit confusing. Ms O'Connell finished up by saying that she wanted the State to assist further in the work Guaranteed Irish does, especially on the exporting side. I ask her to focus on that and give us some practical examples of how she thinks the State, Government and the Oireachtas can assist.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: The 50th Anniversary of Guaranteed Irish: Discussion (24 Apr 2024)

David Stanton: Maybe that is something that this committee, with a remit covering enterprise, trade and employment, could support by writing to the Minister and the various relevant agencies. Does Guaranteed Irish cover Northern Ireland as well?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: The 50th Anniversary of Guaranteed Irish: Discussion (24 Apr 2024)

David Stanton: Does Guaranteed Irish have a relationship with employer organisations such as IBEC, the Small Firms Association, ISME and Chambers Ireland?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: The 50th Anniversary of Guaranteed Irish: Discussion (24 Apr 2024)

David Stanton: It does not have charitable status.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Irish Emergency Alliance: Discussion (23 Apr 2024)

David Stanton: ...involved in 20 disasters internationally last year. It is certainly right that there is more than one at any time. Many of the organisations have their own fundraising abilities and mechanisms. Does Ms de Barra see the alliance taking over from those in time, is that where things are going? Trócaire raised, correct me if I am wrong, €93 million last year and Action Aid...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Offshore Wind Energy Strategy: Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment (17 Apr 2024)

David Stanton: ...that the consumer will pay less for energy and, as somebody has said, we might eventually be a Saudi Arabia of wind energy eventually and maybe generate relatively cheap energy from wind, which does not cost anything except the technology to make it happen. I thank our guests for their responses.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: School Accommodation (16 Apr 2024)

David Stanton: What plans does the Minister and her Department have for another second level school in east Cork? This is probably one of the fastest-growing areas in the country at the moment, with thousands of houses planned but many of the schools there are already at capacity, even though they have got fantastic extensions. I would be interested in the Minister's response.
