Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Revenue Commissioners: Discussion (15 May 2024)

Aidan Davitt: I listened to the introduction. I was in the office for a while and in the Seanad with Senator Higgins. I have a couple of specific queries first. I have a good deal of experience of Mr. Cody's, the Collector General's and the team's dealings with small business, particularly warehoused tax. I commend them, as I did at our previous meeting with them. The Revenue Commissioners have taken...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Revenue Commissioners: Discussion (15 May 2024)

Aidan Davitt: It would be unusual changing the age at which somebody is entitled to buy an excisable product to 21. That is the point I am making. It is a bit-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Revenue Commissioners: Discussion (15 May 2024)

Aidan Davitt: I agree with everything Mr. Cody is saying and it is the way forward. However, this is easier for bigger businesses and even medium-sized businesses which have somebody sitting at a desk preparing accounts. However, smaller businesses with two or three employees are finding it extremely onerous. The uptake has been 50% at best since this was implemented in January. By the end of the year...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Revenue Commissioners: Discussion (15 May 2024)

Aidan Davitt: It will bring them in under the net. I suppose it is something that will be adjusted in the future and whatever else. I appreciate that. I was just curious to see how it is working because there has been a lot of talk about it in small business. I am also curious about something else that was highlighted to me recently on the property side. Many larger farms are being bought by people who...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Revenue Commissioners: Discussion (15 May 2024)

Aidan Davitt: I would suggest that if a purchaser wanted to pass on a farm, instead of a son or daughter applying over time to get a green certificate, the purchaser would need one as well in order to qualify for the tax exemption. I do not think this is the case at present. Perhaps something like this might be practical. At least the purchaser would have to make some effort to get a green certificate....

Seanad: Cost of Doing Business: Statements (17 Apr 2024)

Aidan Davitt: I welcome the Minister to the House. He is a Mullingar man the same as me. We soldiered on the town council and county council together and last week was a great week for the town as we now have a senior Minister. I wholeheartedly welcome the Minister to the House and congratulate him on his elevation. As the Minister knows, I am involved in running a business and employ quite a lot of...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Illegal Israeli Settlements Divestment Bill 2023: Discussion (20 Mar 2024)

Aidan Davitt: I listened to the whole discussion. I apologise; I was tied up in the office. Mr. Ashmore mentioned the "unintended consequences" of the Bill and whatever else a couple of times. He threw it out there a couple of times. We are looking at the UN database on which the companies are listed. We get the eight companies and whatever else. I am just curious about this Bill. Would it be...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Illegal Israeli Settlements Divestment Bill 2023: Discussion (20 Mar 2024)

Aidan Davitt: The way the Bill is being put forward at present could possibly impact on larger Irish companies that are based out of here.

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Pension Provisions (28 Feb 2024)

Aidan Davitt: I would like to welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Heydon, to the House. He is a very active Minister of State in the area of agriculture. I heard him on the TV and the radio over last couple of days where he explained very well the angst that is being experienced by farmers. He has a great understanding of it. However, this is extremely unfair. In my time, and I have been here as...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (27 Feb 2024)

Aidan Davitt: I know that this is something close to the Leader's own heart as a person who has been involved with the Defence Forces. My thoughts are with all of the soldiers in Camp Shamrock today. Hezbollah's actions are despicable in using the cover of the Irish camp in Lebanon as a foil to fire indiscriminate rockets into Israel. It is putting peacekeepers under threat and my thoughts - people from...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (21 Feb 2024)

Aidan Davitt: ..., Enfield and a number of other large towns. Before Christmas, there was an extensive review of the Cork to Dublin line, with a new service for commuters and another service now leaving Cork at 6 a.m. and arriving in Dublin before 9 a.m. There was also a review of the Drogheda line, with additional trains provided. New lines were also opened, including the Athenry line and other...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (30 Jan 2024)

Aidan Davitt: Today I want to talk about the cost of business and the imminent and upgraded scheme on the cost of business and the reliefs. There is quite a onerous amount of new red tape and regulation for all businesses, particularly small businesses that are operated by two, three or four people. First there is the cost of auto-enrolment for pensions. Somebody must physically set this up and maintain...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (22 Nov 2023)

Aidan Davitt: I want to be associated with the words about Mary on her retirement and Paul's nice words about James McClean. He has been an exceptional winger from his time in Derry all the way through to Wigan and Wrexham at present. No one should have to endure all the abuse he has had to put up with because of his beliefs and his nationality. I rise to speak about the serious concerns I have...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: International Protection (14 Nov 2023)

Aidan Davitt: The figures are eye-watering to say the least. I am a supporter of what we have done for the people of Ukraine. It was curious, I was talking to a member of the Government of Georgia recently. It has a similar type of population to ourselves and is on the doorstep of Ukraine. Georgia has 40,000 Ukrainians in its country and Ireland has approximately 100,000. I have no problem with the...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: International Protection (14 Nov 2023)

Aidan Davitt: I suggest that more than 100,000 refugees at the time of a housing crisis represents a hard number to crunch.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (9 Nov 2023)

Aidan Davitt: I welcome Deputy Grealish and his friends and colleagues to the Gallery. My colleague, Senator Crowe, who is from the same constituency, has already spoken; he will hardly get an opportunity to welcome them so I will do so on his behalf. The reintroduced tenant purchase scheme is long overdue, but I have encountered a problem. Perhaps some of the clerical officers dealing with it are not...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (26 Oct 2023)

Aidan Davitt: I rise today to speak about the new gambling legislation that has been before the House and is due to come back again. I certainly welcome many of the measures in it, especially around hand-held devices and ease of access without a lot of proof. It is important legislation, particularly for problem gamblers. However, one part I disagree with is that someone who looks at racing on a...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Authorised Push Payment Fraud: Discussion (Resumed) (24 Oct 2023)

Aidan Davitt: In different ways, it is directed at all three organisations. By times, they will come across what are obviously crimes involving the total defrauding of people. People have filmed crimes live at various times, including on Meta. On Amazon, people may be selling fraudulent things, although this is not done by Amazon itself. Have the three companies data on when they might have liaised...
