Seanad: Disability (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2023: Committee Stage (8 May 2024)

Erin McGreehan: I welcome the Minister of the State to the House. I very much welcome the opportunity to contribute. I wish I had the opportunity to sign to Senator Clonan's Bill but I was not asked to sign it. Members were reading out the list of colleagues who are signatories to this Bill, but I was not asked to sign it. I absolutely would have signed it and when it came in on Second Stage, we...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Challenges Facing the Bus and Coach Industry: Discussion (8 May 2024)

Erin McGreehan: I welcome our guests. I was glad to finally hear disability and accessibility mentioned during the meeting, nearly two hours in. That is very positive. I will focus on those two issues. They were not mentioned in the opening statements. Climate change and sustainability were, but disability and access for people with disabilities were not. I would like our guests' organisations to make...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Challenges Facing the Bus and Coach Industry: Discussion (8 May 2024)

Erin McGreehan: I think accessibility is something this committee should look at because people with disabilities need public transport more than anyone else.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (2 May 2024)

Erin McGreehan: The Order of Business today is No. 1, Employment (Collective Redundancies and Miscellaneous Provisions) and Companies (Amendment) Bill 2023 - Committee and Remaining Stages, to be taken at 11.45 a.m.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Disability Matters: United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities at Local Level: Discussion (Resumed) (1 May 2024)

Erin McGreehan: He was elected in 2007, I believe. I was working here at the time. Was he a Member of this House or did he go straight to being an MEP? I think he was definitely a Member of the Houses of the Oireachtas.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Disability Matters: United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities at Local Level: Discussion (Resumed) (1 May 2024)

Erin McGreehan: The witnesses are all very welcome. I congratulate them on all their work. It is very clear from all the responses and the opening statements that there is a clear commitment to inclusivity and to pushing the boundaries of what we have been doing up to now and to making things better. This has come across very clearly. It is the modus operandi of this committee as well. We are all in...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Disability Matters: United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities at Local Level: Discussion (Resumed) (1 May 2024)

Erin McGreehan: Yes. If I had a disability or if I needed a reasonable accommodation, at what point of the interview process would I say this? When do I tick the box to state that I have a mental health condition or whatever? When is this disclosed to an employer? We know people are not disclosing their disabilities. I refer to enabling people to feel safe to do so. I thank the witnesses.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Disability Matters: United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities at Local Level: Discussion (Resumed) (1 May 2024)

Erin McGreehan: Can we go back to the issue of the pilot programme with the Department of Education? That is looking at school leavers. Where is that?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Disability Matters: The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities at Local Level: Discussion (Resumed) (17 Apr 2024)

Erin McGreehan: I welcome the witnesses. There is a great deal to say about inaccessible transport. We have to be really realistic here. Much of the time, public transport in Ireland is completely inaccessible and unwelcoming for many people. Best intentions and good work are all very positive and welcome but we have to be real. People with disabilities contact me because they feel unsafe and unwelcome...

Seanad: Agriculture: Statements (16 Apr 2024)

Erin McGreehan: I welcome the Minister. It is always important and welcome to have statements on agriculture. We all want to shine a light on those we are meeting day in, day out. We are living it and we are hearing from farming families from throughout our constituencies about how hard it is. We can see it. We are fairly miserable here when the rain is pouring down around us, and we have to be...

Joint Committee On Children, Equality, Disability, Integration And Youth: Protection of Children in the Use of Artificial Intelligence: Discussion (Resumed) (16 Apr 2024)

Erin McGreehan: Thank you. Our guests are very welcome to today's meeting. Many topics have been thrashed out already today. We would all agree that social media is an absolute cesspit and that X is the worst, to speak plainly. X is the worst, in my experience, but social media generally is not always a nice, comfortable place. While I do not want to be presumptuous about ages, most of us grew up in the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Disability Matters: The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities at Local Level: Discussion (10 Apr 2024)

Erin McGreehan: It is important that we get people like the witnesses in front of the committee. I have a few general questions and then some specific ones. We will cut to the chase and get into the general questions. How many people or what percentage of people with disabilities are employed in each of the witnesses' organisations? Is this information known? Are there any specific targets for...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Disability Matters: The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities at Local Level: Discussion (10 Apr 2024)

Erin McGreehan: To go on a tangent, as reasonable accommodation was mentioned, if someone comes to HR or a line manager, depending on how the organisation filters it up, looking for reasonable accommodation, whether that is assistive technology or something else, in some public organisations there has been a difficulty because it is part of the budget. Private organisations, as we all know, can apply to the...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (21 Mar 2024)

Erin McGreehan: I echo the calls for the continuation of the waiver of development fees. It was a hugely successful scheme and it is really important that we continue it. I hope that sense will prevail and that those very worthwhile waivers will be continued. I also want to raise an issue that is very important for Border counties, particularly Louth. It is about the increase in excise duties on fuel...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Disability Matters: Planning for Inclusive Communities: Minister of State at the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage (20 Mar 2024)

Erin McGreehan: I thank the Chair. I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Kieran O'Donnell, to the committee. Housing is one of the most fundamental things that we need to be able to navigate this world, for obvious reasons. I do not need to tell the Minister of State the importance of housing. However, housing for a person with a disability is a battle, most of the time. I very much welcome the...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (7 Mar 2024)

Erin McGreehan: March is Endometriosis Awareness Month. Yesterday, we had a fantastic briefing in the audiovisual room that was organised by the Leader. As someone who suffers from endometriosis, I know it is an excruciating and debilitating condition. There is so much to a condition like endometriosis that is unseen. It can affect sufferers at any time of the day or month. It is not just about one...

Seanad: Health (Termination of Pregnancy Services) (Safe Access Zones) Bill 2023: Committee Stage (Resumed) (7 Mar 2024)

Erin McGreehan: This is my first time speaking on the Bill. I welcome the Minister. I am covering for my colleague, Senator Clifford-Lee, who cannot be present. It is important to discuss the reason for the Bill and why the amendments should not be accepted. As Senator Clonan stated, when people are going into a facility for gynaecological or obstetrical care, others have no idea what is going on. I,...

Seanad: Health (Termination of Pregnancy Services) (Safe Access Zones) Bill 2023: Committee Stage (Resumed) (7 Mar 2024)

Erin McGreehan: On Wednesday, 20 March 2024 at 12 noon.

Seanad: International Women's Day: Statements (6 Mar 2024)

Erin McGreehan: I apologise. My other half gives great care in my home. My father gave great care in my home. Some of the Senator's language is disgusting. To go back to International Women's Day I want to acknowledge women who are in conflict. Thousands of women are suffering in war. We see on our screens every day the women in Gaza who are losing their babies straight after birth or who are not...

Seanad: International Women's Day: Statements (6 Mar 2024)

Erin McGreehan: You do not speak for me. Please do not put us all in that wee box. Do not do it. It is unbelievably insulting and shocking the stuff that comes out of your mouth. We are all able to question but you take a tiny grain of question and go with it and run down that rabbit hole as quickly as you possibly can to get those Twitter likes and get the videos up there as quickly as possible. It is...
