Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Neurology and Neurorehabilitation Healthcare Strategies: Discussion (15 May 2024)

Martin Conway: I have no doubt about the bona fides and the commitment of the people on that committee. Clearly, in a positive way, they all have a vested interest to get it over the line. It would be interesting to see where the blockages are. Administrative blockages is a very broad term. What exactly are the administrative blockages? I had to leave the room earlier but I was following proceedings on...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (8 May 2024)

Martin Conway: Before I make my comments, I would like to extend my sympathies to the D'Arcy family, in particular former Senator Michael D'Arcy whom we all served with here for a number of years. Tomorrow is Europe Day, as the Cathaoirleach knows. We are having a debate in the House on the importance of Europe. It is a time to reflect on all of the benefits that this country has derived from its...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Implementation of Sláintecare Reforms: Department of Health and HSE (8 May 2024)

Martin Conway: I thank all the guests this morning. Thus far it has been quite informative. I will return to the issue of UHL and to Mr. McCallion specifically. This time last year, an expert team was sent in by the HSE at national level in April 2023. That expert team made recommendations. One would have to wonder whether those recommendations were implemented in full and whether an evaluation was...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Implementation of Sláintecare Reforms: Department of Health and HSE (8 May 2024)

Martin Conway: I understand there will be scaling up with the two 96-bed blocks, a surgical hub, etc. What concerns me is the impression that is given that there could be a recommendation for a model 3 hospital. When I put that to Dr. Henry and others at a committee meeting last November, it was made abundantly clear that the clinical advice is absolutely cast iron that the recommendation is for the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Implementation of Sláintecare Reforms: Department of Health and HSE (8 May 2024)

Martin Conway: When the regional executive officers are looking at the capacity issue, they are guided by clinical advice. Is that correct?

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Hospital Services (2 May 2024)

Martin Conway: I know that the Minister of State, Deputy Calleary is taking this on behalf of the Minister for Health but I also know he will be well aware of the ongoing challenges and issues with healthcare in the mid-west. I have not tabled this Commencement Matter to look for a 24-hour consultant-led emergency department at Ennis Hospital. In the engagement the health committee had recently with all...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Hospital Services (2 May 2024)

Martin Conway: I thank the Minister of State for his fairly detailed reply. The small hospitals framework is something that I very much support and welcome. I would like to see services scaled up much quicker than is currently the case. In the of previous Commencement matters I tabled, I was told that the dialysis unit would be operational by the end of 2023, and certainly by quarter 1 or 2 of 2024. I...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (2 May 2024)

Martin Conway: I think of a number of areas that we really need to be looking at right now. Senator Gavan and I would agree that we need to start looking at the US military's use of Shannon Airport. As a country, we are better than that. We do not need to be facilitating the refuelling of American army jets and planes in Shannon Airport. I know I am an outlier in Clare in expressing that view. It would...

Seanad: Loneliness: Motion (1 May 2024)

Martin Conway: The Minister of State is very welcome to Seanad Éireann. He served two terms here with me and we had the same assistant, Marian, working for both of us for a long time. I am delighted for the Minister of State personally and I have no doubt he will bring a wealth of experience to the role, having been an MEP, Senator and TD. It is fitting he is in the House to address this very...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Challenges Relating to the Provision of Dentistry Services: Discussion (1 May 2024)

Martin Conway: I thank my colleague Deputy Durkan for facilitating me going ahead because I have commitments in the Seanad. I thank the witnesses for being here. The fact they have been here three times during the lifetime of this particular health committee amplifies the commitment this committee has to advancing oral healthcare and dental care in this country. We are as frustrated as anybody else and...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (30 Apr 2024)

Martin Conway: Following on from Senator Kyne's request for a debate on public transport, I noted in our emails this morning an update from Irish Rail. The details in the update are very welcome. It is great that in the first couple of months of the year, 10.8 million people travelled by train in this country, up 13% on the same period last year. It is great news in terms of the Foynes to Limerick city...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Health Services for the Blind and Vision Impaired: Vision Ireland (24 Apr 2024)

Martin Conway: People probably know my position on this particular issue so I do not need any more than five minutes. I thank Mr. White and Mr. Mullaniff for the powerful opening statements. I am sure there are many more than 40 reasons this committee should care about the nearly 400,000 people in this country who suffer some form of sight loss. The last census proved that our population is ageing. With...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Medicinal Products (23 Apr 2024)

Martin Conway: The Minister of State is very welcome to the House. I understand he is taking this matter on behalf of the Minister for Health. As the Minister of State well knows, Ireland has nine of the ten leading pharmaceutical production companies in Europe. It is a leading exporter of new medicines and medicines in general, not only throughout Europe but also the rest of the world. During the...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (11 Apr 2024)

Martin Conway: I also welcome Senator O'Hara to Leinster House. As somebody from a minority background, it is wonderful to have somebody here speaking on behalf of Northern Ireland. Senator Ó Donnghaile did a great job and Senator Currie certainly does a great job in that area so I suspect Senators O'Hara and Currie will have many conversations to benefit the people of Northern Ireland. I also...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Funding and Implementation of the National Cancer Strategy: Discussion (10 Apr 2024)

Martin Conway: ...do enormous work in advocacy. The Irish Cancer Society is an important stakeholder. There is no doubt it has saved thousands of lives and given people quality of life. On the availability of updated data, we have had discussions in this committee over the years about computer systems. As regards access to data, for example, people who turn up at an emergency department in an area they...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (20 Mar 2024)

Martin Conway: Like many others I got up this morning not expecting the Taoiseach to announce his resignation. However, he did and I think it was a courageous thing to do. Many people leave politics because they are ordered out and the electorate does not support them. To realise that he has given his best and it is time to move on to do other things when he could have realistically remained as Taoiseach...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: HSE National Service Plan 2024: Discussion (20 Mar 2024)

Martin Conway: That is what I am coming to next. It is disappointing. The word on the street is that the number of consultants in Limerick who have signed up to the new contract is lower than anywhere else in the country. Does Mr. Gloster think that unwillingness by consultants in Limerick to sign up to the new contract is having an effect on the operation and management of the emergency department at UHL?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: HSE National Service Plan 2024: Discussion (20 Mar 2024)

Martin Conway: Clearly, it is having an effect in terms of the number of consultants that are available at weekends and at night.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: HSE National Service Plan 2024: Discussion (20 Mar 2024)

Martin Conway: I would like to ask about a couple of additional areas. There has been a big focus on CAMHS recently, and rightly so, but there are waiting lists for primary care psychology services that in some instances are longer than those for CAMHS. What is the plan to deal with this? Clearly it is an area that has not had a large amount of public attention but there is a serious and growing need....

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (7 Mar 2024)

Martin Conway: Yet again, I raise the issue of UHL. Today, at least, elective surgery is resuming at the hospital having been suspended for two days due to pressure on the emergency department. A number of things have happened, one of the most important of them being the decision announced today by Mr. Bernard Gloster, CEO of the HSE, on "Morning Ireland" that the minor injuries unit at Ennis Hospital...
