Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: EU Directives (15 Jun 2021)

Denis O'Donovan: ...will not be in the position to meet or to take on board financially. It is ludicrous and I ask the Minister of State to convey this message, not alone to the Sea-Fisheries Protection Authority, SFPA, which is the enforcer in this country, but also to the European Commission. As another example, recently in Castletownbere, three large Spanish trawlers landed probably about 100,000 tonnes...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: EU Directives (15 Jun 2021)

Denis O'Donovan: ...species than the Irish have. We have been totally unrepresented. The Minister, through the Commissioner and the Commission, must stand up for the rights of these fishermen. To say that the SFPA will do its job is grossly unfair. Why is the SFPA not in places like Castletownbere and Dingle, and other ports like Killybegs or Ros an Mhíl, weighing the fish brought in by the French...

Seanad Public Consultation Committee: Farm Safety: Discussion (23 Mar 2015)

Denis O'Donovan: ...heard it said in west Cork and Kerry that we are over-regulated by the HSA. There have also been references to the Garda investigating the fishing industry and the Sea Fisheries Protection Authority, SFPA, coming down on top of people. In one sense, the HSA is a group in command and in control and has a very important job to do - I am aware that its representatives visit schools - but...

Seanad: Order of Business (12 Mar 2014)

Denis O'Donovan: ...m long; it is one of the biggest super trawlers ever to fish in Irish waters and concerns about it have been raised nationally and elsewhere in Europe. A former Sea-Fisheries Protection Authority, SFPA, officer is deeply concerned about the damage it can do to Irish stock. Conservation groups are also concerned about the damage it can do to whale and dolphin numbers because it can hoover...

Seanad: Sea Fisheries and Maritime Jurisdiction (Fixed Penalty Notice) Bill 2013: Second Stage (27 Nov 2013)

Denis O'Donovan: .... There is a lack of trust among fishing organisations in politicians generally, Ministers in particular, including the current Minister, and the Department. That must be healed if at all possible. If the SFPA really wanted to implement the full letter of the law of this Bill and of the legislation that we as Oireachtas Members hold guard over, every fishing vessel from Killybegs to...

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Nov 2013)

Denis O'Donovan: ...debate on the fishing industry. The whitefish fleet is at crisis point. In the past couple of days 15 boats were tied up at Kilmore Quay at the request of the sea fishery protection agency, SFPA. That is a ludicrous situation. Two boats had fish over quota but the SFPA tied up the entire fleet, a total of 21 boats, and put 115 jobs at risk. Our whitefish quotas are totally inadequate....

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Nov 2013)

Denis O'Donovan: ...I will push very hard for an amendment to the Order of Business on this important issue. It is very serious that at any given time half of the whitefish fleet can be tied up at the behest of the SFPA. There is something ludicrously wrong in that. It is about time that the Minister demand extra quota or fair play from Europe for Irish fishermen in Irish waters.

Seanad: Fish Quotas: Motion (15 Dec 2010)

Denis O'Donovan: ...This issue concerns the small number of fishermen who fish for crayfish. These are expensive fish and most of them are exported live to Spain. Currently, the Sea Fisheries Protection Authority, SFPA , requires that landed crayfish must be a minimum of 110 mm measured across the back. The minimum in Europe is 95 mm. I have been told that if the same rule applied here, that would create...

Seanad: Fishing Industry: Statements (12 Nov 2008)

Denis O'Donovan: ..., have the Food Safety Authority of Ireland — which is meant to be the leading light in food safety — and another body delegated to work in that area, the Sea-Fisheries Protection Authority, SFPA. The United States has a population of 300 million and it has the FDA alone. It could not understand why we have two bodies monitoring the same area. There seemed to be a conflict of...
