Electoral (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill 2015: Report and Final Stages (18 Nov 2015)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: ...State also suggested that applicants to the register could access an official from the electoral office or local authority. The same problem pertains in that regard as pertains to attendance at a Garda station in rural areas, because not every council has offices dotted around the constituency. Town councils have been closed in this city and some of the local authority offices are closing...

Electoral (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill 2015: Report and Final Stages (18 Nov 2015)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: ...can be fined or taxed if they do not vote. While we are not looking to go to that extreme, we are trying to ensure it is easier for people to get on the register. Deputy Stanley referred to Garda stations. In my own area there are quite a number of Garda stations, so that would not be the problem. However, there are many people who do not want to be in a Garda station and, in fact,...

Other Questions: Garda Vetting of Personnel (17 Nov 2015)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: As far as I know, Turas Nua employees are Garda vetted, whereas Seetec which obviously is a private company has its own private system. The customer charter for Turas Nua does not seem to be as accessible online as the Seetec one and that should be corrected. There could be highly sensitive data about people who are long-time unemployed for a multitude of reasons. There could be a big file...

Other Questions: Garda Vetting of Personnel (17 Nov 2015)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: ...Seetec and Turas Nua under the JobPath scheme and to ensure that all the protections that currently hold to the Department of Social Protection also hold in regard to these companies, in particular Garda vetting, data protection and any other restrictions in terms of the sensitive data they carry.

Public Holidays (Lá na Poblachta) Bill 2013: Second Stage [Private Members] (9 Oct 2015)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: ...still obstructing ideas that are not its own. That is why the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, Deputy Alex White, faked outrage here yesterday when I raised his role in refusing to grant permission to Sinn Féin to use the frontage of the GPO for a light show spectacular next year. He misled the Dáil when he said that I make things up as I go along....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions: Design and Layout of Ballot Papers: Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government (24 Jun 2015)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: ...one wants to vote in an upcoming election, one could be asked by the returning officer to put one's name on the supplementary register and one would have to go through the rigmarole of going to a Garda station and getting a garda to sign the form. When I was in Pearse Street Garda station a month ago, it took 20 minutes for a garda to come to the desk. If one was waiting for a form to be...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions: Design and Layout of Ballot Papers: Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government (24 Jun 2015)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: The problem is not with gardaí. It relates to people not going to Garda stations.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions: Design and Layout of Ballot Papers: Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government (24 Jun 2015)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: People will not go the Garda. I might give them the forms, but they will not go to the Garda station. In the past it was a case of filling in the form and sending it. That was no bother, but now the system is different. In fairness to some gardaí, they arrange a clinic to deal with the issue. I think they did this prior to the previous referenda when they went to colleges.

Ceisteanna - Questions (Resumed): Crime Data (19 May 2015)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: ...in which crimes were recorded as supposedly being solved. The problem was that "solved" did not necessarily mean there was a conviction at the end of it. It might mean, for example, that the gardaí involved in the investigation had managed to identify a suspect. There was not necessarily a delivery for the victim of the crime. There probably is a need to have different...

Industrial Relations (Members of the Garda Síochána and the Defence Forces) Bill 2015: Second Stage [Private Members] (24 Apr 2015)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: I commend Deputy McNamara on this Private Members' Bill and am happy to confirm that Sinn Féin will support it. Statute Law Revision Bill 2015: Second Stage (23 Apr 2015)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: ...is appropriate. There is one particular issue of concern to me. The derogation in relation to the Defence Act is to be retained. I have not researched in detail the reason this derogation is to remain separate. Why does this apply only to the Defence Forces and not the Garda Síochána? Is there a particular reason for this such as, say, the secrecy of declarations of war and...
