James Lawless: Before the Minister of State responds, I wish to concur with the Deputy's point in respect of the bike training course. I have heard the same feedback from Garda members with whom I am friendly, particularly in the context of the role of bicycle usage and training in community policing. Deputy Costello makes a good point about gardaí on bike patrols being part of the urban environment...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Enforcement of Court Orders relating to Child Maintenance, Access and Custody: Discussion (25 Oct 2022)

James Lawless: I noted that in her opening statement, Ms Bayliss made reference to the lack of a prosecuting garda. I was not aware that was the case. As is the case for other bench warrants, I imagined there would be a prosecutor attached. That might be a recommendation from this hearing. There will be many recommendations but that may be one.

James Lawless: ...sessions on that topic. There is enough knowledge and wisdom on the committee not to delve into live cases, so I think we can manage in such a way. Concerns were expressed in the aftermath about Garda equipment, resources, staffing and so on, which can be looked------

Communications (Retention of Data) (Amendment) Bill 2022: Committee and Remaining Stages (6 Jul 2022)

James Lawless: ...down the track. It is regrettable that we ended up having to consider this legislation in a hurry in the dying weeks of the summer term. We cannot pretend that this Bill strengthens the hand of the Garda because it does the opposite. It weakens the hand of the Garda and does not do it any good whatsoever. We heard that from no less than the assistant Garda Commissioner when he came...
