Fergus O'Dowd: I raised a particular road safety issue with the clerk to the committee. It was reported in an article in The Irish Timesthat drivers who failed a Garda roadside impairment test could not be required to provide a blood or urine sample owing to an error in the legislation. That is an urgent matter of concern for many involved in road safety. Will the Minister update the committee in that regard?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Disqualified Drivers: Discussion (20 Jun 2018)

Fergus O'Dowd: I thank Ms Murdock for her submission. I acknowledge the tremendous work that both the Road Safety Authority and the Garda Síochána are doing in making our roads safer for everybody. It is unacceptable that so many drivers who are disqualified are on the roads. Sadly, more people have died on our roads this year compared with last year. That is also unacceptable. I fully...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Disqualified Drivers: Discussion (20 Jun 2018)

Fergus O'Dowd: ...The vast majority of those people are drink-drivers or are dangerous drivers which is why it is important that when they are put off the road, they stay off the road. Anything we can do to help An Garda Síochána in that regard, we will.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Disqualified Drivers: Discussion (20 Jun 2018)

Fergus O'Dowd: ...that absolutely. The key point is that this has been an important engagement. I want to focus on what is to happen in the future. We all support the suggestion that the app be available to the Garda and that the funds are available throughout the State. As Deputy Troy said, we need to know how much this would cost and get it onto the Minister's agenda for the budget this year. I have...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Disqualified Drivers: Discussion (20 Jun 2018)

Fergus O'Dowd: ...shortly but I would like to go back to the point about what the next steps should be if we were to have another meeting, because that is hugely important. I note the excellent work the RSA and An Garda Síochána are doing, particularly those advertisements. It is very moving to see families talking about loved ones and little children. It is just not on. The figures must be...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Accessibility of Public Transport for People with Disabilities: Discussion (Resumed) (13 Jun 2018)

Fergus O'Dowd: ...people can show rather than having to speak, is important and will, I believe, work well for many people. The committee is due to meet representatives from the NTA next week. Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Project Ireland 2040: Discussion (22 Mar 2018)

Fergus O'Dowd: ...and asked the then Minister to investigate how this had happened. I was told that because it was a draft development plan, it did not have any legal status, but that if I wished, I could go to An Garda Síochána and report the matter. There has been a lot of hookery and crookery in planning in Ireland which is appalling and disgraceful. The shame falls on politicians and those...

Fergus O'Dowd: ...where it was but it has been brought to my attention. It was not in County Louth. There was a court case and a conviction for fraud. A business person lost millions and he lost his business as a result. The Garda prosecuted in the case but the person still has questions arising in respect of the local authority. I rang the auditor in Dublin and we got a letter from him saying he would...

National Planning Framework: Statements (26 Oct 2017)

Fergus O'Dowd: ...is great interaction on that front. However, the policing of the Drogheda district ends at the motorway.
