Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Shoplifting: Discussion (13 Dec 2023)

Garret Ahearn: Is Mr. Dunne finding what I find in Tipperary, namely, that shops have different relationships with different Garda stations? There could be a Garda station covering one area of Tipperary where the relationship is really good and the gardaí arrive quickly. However, there could be another place in County Tipperary where the gardaí in the station do not come out at all.

Seanad: Recent Violence in Dublin City Centre: Motion (29 Nov 2023)

Garret Ahearn: As I was saying, the Minister showed in Clonmel how her intervention, working with the Garda, can change things. We have seen it from the Government response in Limerick before. We need the same response the Minister made in Clonmel and previous Governments made in Limerick, which is to show force. As she said on TV, these people need to be held accountable for their crimes and locked up.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (28 Nov 2023)

Garret Ahearn: ...and some of our non-national residents who stood up to defend people against the most atrocious of crimes that we never thought would take place here. Since then there has been much commentary. As yet, An Garda Síochána has not published a report or conclusions as to what happened. Unfortunately, many people, particularly politicians, seem to come up with their own conclusions...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (8 Nov 2023)

Garret Ahearn: ...to bring kids to school, who used to do it before they were 70 and who loved their job. All we are saying is they should be allowed to do it. We recently increased the age for people to go into An Garda Síochána. I do not see any reason we cannot increase the age for people to be able to drive school buses. It is a simple thing. People who are over 75 need a medical...

Seanad: Control of Exports Bill 2023: Second Stage (3 Oct 2023)

Garret Ahearn: ...controls related to military items, the establishment of a national military export control list, rules and conditions for obtaining and using authorisations, exemptions for the Defence Forces or An Garda Síochána in certain circumstances, the establishment of an independent adjudication panel to hear appeals and disclosure requests, an effective enforcement capability for...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: An Garda Síochána (16 May 2023)

Garret Ahearn: I have lost count of how many times I have raised this subject in this House, at home and in local media. It relates to Clonmel Garda station. I look forward to the Minister's response. We are finally at a point where we have a solution and this project can progress. I have raised it so often because of the number of delays to the Garda station project and, most important, to support the...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: An Garda Síochána (16 May 2023)

Garret Ahearn: I thank the Minister for that confirmation. The Minister said he hopes this is good news for the Garda in Clonmel and I can tell him straight that it is hugely good news. I was speaking to the superintendent there and he has confirmed his team in Clonmel of this and they are overwhelmed and thrilled that this is happening. It has been a long time coming but we have got there in the end....

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: An Garda Síochána (28 Feb 2023)

Garret Ahearn: I thank the Minister for coming to the Chamber and taking this important Commencement matter. When I speak about Clonmel Garda station, I must first recognise that the Minister is responsible for two Departments. Kickham Barracks plays a key role in both Departments. Before I outline my frustration with the Department of Justice and the Government regarding Clonmel Garda station, since I...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: An Garda Síochána (28 Feb 2023)

Garret Ahearn: ...development plan projects. This is a clear recognition that while we are announcing things and putting money towards things, for some reason some projects are simply not being delivered. Clonmel Garda station is a prime example of this and is a project we announced eight years ago. We have had five Ministers in the meantime and nothing has been done on the grounds of Kickham Barracks to...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (6 Oct 2022)

Garret Ahearn: There has been a big increase in antisocial behaviour in Clonmel and the surrounding areas in recent weeks. This has been brewing for a number of years. Gardaí are doing their best but their resources are limited. We have now got to the stage where a young farmer was beaten so badly this week that he almost died. There is a fear within the community, across Clerihan, Lisronagh and...

Seanad: Defence Forces (Evidence) Bill 2019: Second Stage (22 Jun 2022)

Garret Ahearn: ...for him. As the Minister said, this is a technical Bill but, essentially, it is quite simple as well. All we are trying to do is have the military and the Defence Forces be in line with what An Garda Síochána is doing with its colleagues across EU member states. When the Bill went through the Dáil, as the Minister said, it received backing from all sides. I think that...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (30 Mar 2022)

Garret Ahearn: I ask the Deputy Leader for some information or to seek a debate with the Minister for Justice regarding Garda stations, especially the proposed new Garda station in Clonmel. It is in the capital building programme, along with a new station in Macroom and the children's court. Clonmel Garda station is ready to go, just like Macroom is, but it is being held up in the process because of the...

Seanad: Passport Office Service: Motion (2 Feb 2022)

Garret Ahearn: ...recent times due to the pandemic; -to the Minister for Foreign Affairs and his staff, the diplomatic and clerical staff of the Department of Foreign Affairs, and all civil servants, including members of An Garda Síochána, who have helped citizens of all types, ages and locations, to apply for, and obtain, new and renewed passports; calls on the Government: -to redouble its...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (25 Jan 2022)

Garret Ahearn: ...a passport for my two-year-old son's first passport. I visited a pharmacy to get his photograph taken. There was a queue in the pharmacy of people getting pictures, predominantly for young children. I then went to the Garda station with my wife to sign a consent as a guardian. The garda said the station had been inundated with people looking for passports. I then went to the post...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (1 Dec 2021)

Garret Ahearn: I received confirmation during the week that construction at Clonmel Garda station is expected to start in September 2023.It is welcome that we have a timeframe for it but it is incredibly frustrating how slow the process has been. Clonmel Garda station is part of a bundle under a public-private partnership, PPP. The bundle includes Macroom Garda station and the family law complex at...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Vaccination Programme (10 Nov 2021)

Garret Ahearn: ...restaurant or bar that must check a certificate in any case but it would discourage people from using fake Covid certificates or certificates from somebody else. More powers should be given to the Garda to fine people rather than bars or restaurants, as this is about discouraging people from using other people's Covid certificates.

Seanad: Budget 2022: Statements (12 Oct 2021)

Garret Ahearn: ...announcements made today. As someone who hails from Tipperary, I welcome the announcement of extra funding for law and order and the Department of Justice. Next year, there will be 800 new gardaí which will increase Garda strength to 14,600. The programme for Government committed to having a Garda force of 15,000 by the end of the Government's term. The extra 800 gardaí will...

Seanad: Aviation Sector: Statements (21 Jun 2021)

Garret Ahearn: ...again but six weeks ago, on 1 May, the same Senator, in this Chamber, said the following: I find it staggering that the Government has radically curtailed the rights and freedoms of citizens with Garda-enforced 5 km and, at times, 2 km travel limits, yet international travel has continued without any meaningful restriction. How is this fair? How does this make sense? Surely, the...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Driver Test (18 May 2021)

Garret Ahearn: ...their driving test. When I spoke to the lady I mentioned, it was suggested that an interim measure might be put in place for learner drivers on a provisional licence, perhaps some leeway by the Garda for those who have had their provisional licence for a certain period and have good driving experience. If those people have been offered a job and are trying to work it is not feasible for...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Garda Stations (26 Mar 2021)

Garret Ahearn: ...wonderful county of Tipperary. I welcome the Minister to the House and thank her for taking this Commencement matter. I am aware that she attaches importance not only to this matter but to all Garda stations. Built in 1870, Clonmel Garda station has been operating for 150 years. It is located in Emmet Street beside the county council office and in the heart of the town. Its 107 staff,...
