HPV Vaccine: Motion [Private Members] (28 Mar 2018)

Jan O'Sullivan: ...parents who have concerns but when one transfers that into advocating for people not to be vaccinated, then one does a really strong disservice. Several speakers referred to Laura Brennan who has cervical cancer which has no treatment, or rather she cannot be cured of it but treatment could prolong her life. She is a very vibrant young woman who should have a whole life ahead of her...

Written Answers — Vaccination Programme: Vaccination Programme (18 May 2010)

Jan O'Sullivan: Question 210: To ask the Minister for Health and Children the staffing arrangements that have been made to administer the cervical cancer vaccine in the coming year both in the holiday period for the girls who receive their first vaccine before the summer break and in the autumn when there will be two cohorts of girls to be vaccinated in the majority of schools; if an assessment has been...

Written Answers — Vaccination Programme: Vaccination Programme (27 Apr 2010)

Jan O'Sullivan: Question 221: To ask the Minister for Health and Children if the cohort of schoolgirls who were supposed to receive the cervical vaccine this year will now receive it; when vaccination will commence; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [16866/10]

Laboratory Services. (8 Dec 2009)

Jan O'Sullivan: ...of the cold labs and the farming out of the work, possibly abroad, although I share Deputy Reilly's concern about the loss of jobs. One of the problems when Quest Diagnostics got the contract for cervical cancer screening was that many of the Irish laboratories had been neglected in terms of building up what they needed to be able to carry out the tests. Can the Minister clarify if some...

Confidence in Government: Motion (resumed) (10 Jun 2009)

Jan O'Sullivan: ...a zombie bank while €9.6 million is needed by Crumlin Children's Hospital to provide essential services for children and €16 million is needed for a vaccine to protect women from developing cervical cancer. I might add child and adolescent psychiatric teams and beds because children are now in adult psychiatric hospitals. There are 6,000 children at risk who do not have a social...

Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2009: Second Stage (2 Apr 2009)

Jan O'Sullivan: ...has not been allocated, and I urge that it be allocated before the end of the year. I understand a report is to be made available before it is decided upon but it is vital that be rolled out. The cervical screening programme is progressing, which is welcome. I do not have a difficulty with the issue of the drug treatment centre. It makes sense that should be part of the mainstream. The...

Jan O'Sullivan: Question 195: To ask the Minister for Health and Children if persons who were formerly employed to carry out laboratory analysis of cervical screening samples here have all been redeployed following the awarding of the contract for such work to a company (details supplied); if not, the number that are engaged in this work; the number employed for this purpose for whom there is no work; the...

Jan O'Sullivan: Question 164: To ask the Minister for Health and Children the general situation as known to her Department relating to the distribution, purchase and administration of cervical cancer vaccine in the State, indicating the normal terms and conditions of its provision and administration to female children, the relevant outlets, the nature and extent of involvement by any public body or of any...

Programme for Government. (26 Nov 2008)

Jan O'Sullivan: The cervical cancer vaccination programme for 12 year old girls was announced in August and cancelled in November. What discussions have been held? It is in the programme for government. When will it be implemented?

Nursing Homes Support Scheme Bill 2008: Second Stage (13 Nov 2008)

Jan O'Sullivan: ...co-located hospitals, home care packages or whatever. The Labour Party is very concerned at the growing use of the private sector in health care. I referred to this yesterday in the debate on the cervical cancer vaccination programme. A sum of €15 million was given to a private company as part of the health repayment scheme. The work involved in sending letters to in excess of 5,000...

Nursing Homes Support Scheme Bill 2008: Second Stage (13 Nov 2008)

Jan O'Sullivan: ...opinion and raised the threshold for qualification, she still removed the principle of a free medical card for all over 70s. Another example was the decision to defer the introduction of the cervical cancer vaccine, for the sake of less than €10 million per annum. There are many other examples across the health service and the economy in general. The issue of resource capping is not...

Vaccination Programme: Motion (11 Nov 2008)

Jan O'Sullivan: ...this programme. She said last August, "I accept the expert advice that the introduction of a universal high-uptake vaccination programme for young girls, in conjunction with population-based cervical screening, could significantly reduce overall cervical cancer rates". This is very clear and we should not quibble about whether it is more or less effective than screening. The fact is...

Cancer Vaccine: Statements (6 Nov 2008)

Jan O'Sullivan: ...measure, which would lead to greater health outcomes for women, is not a priority? Not for a minute would I suggest that the money be taken from the cancer control programme or the roll-out of cervical screening or BreastCheck, the latter of which has not been completed. These are not the type of programmes from which money should be taken. Rather, it should be taken from areas such as...

Cancer Vaccine: Statements (6 Nov 2008)

Jan O'Sullivan: ...between August and now? Did she seek to make the saving anywhere else before she changed her mind, or did she take comfort in the fact that — as she rightly said — she is spending money on the cervical screening programme and on the cancer control programme? Did the Minister try to find the money somewhere else? What would the Minister say to a parent who cannot afford the fee but...

Request to Move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 32 (6 Nov 2008)

Jan O'Sullivan: ...specific and important matter of public interest requiring urgent attention, namely, the serious implications for the health of women of the Government decision not to proceed with the planned cervical cancer vaccination programme aimed at 12 year old girls, particularly in light of expert opinion that such a programme could save up to 80 lives per year, and the urgent need for the...

Written Answers — Medical Cards: Medical Cards (17 Jun 2008)

Jan O'Sullivan: Question 307: To ask the Minister for Health and Children the reason patients who have a medical card have to pay their general practitioners to have a cervical smear taken; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [22825/08]

Cancer Screening Programme: Statements (29 May 2008)

Jan O'Sullivan: ..., Deputy Emmet Stagg, for pursuing the matter at the Whips' meetings. I assure the Minister that we are fully supportive of a good, accredited and safe programme of cancer screening, whether for cervical or breast screening or any other type of screening. However, I do not know whether it was intentional on the part of the Minister but there was an implication in her contribution that...

Cancer Screening Programme: Statements (29 May 2008)

Jan O'Sullivan: ...more outsourcing, more privatisation and a failure to trust and invest in the Irish public health service. I have no expectation that the Minister will share my concerns about the privatisation of cervical screening or of any other service. She is ideologically committed to privatisation. However, I do expect her partners in Government, Fianna Fáil and the Green Party, to be concerned...

Order of Business (22 May 2008)

Jan O'Sullivan: I asked for a debate on the exclusion of Irish cytology laboratories from the screening programme for cervical cancer. I understand the matter has been discussed by the Whips. Have arrangements been made to hold that debate before the decision ismade?

Order of Business (15 May 2008)

Jan O'Sullivan: I know, and I am asking for a proper debate in this House because the Minister no longer holds responsibility for the cervical screening programme because she has farmed it out to a particular organisation so we cannot raise it with the Minister in the normal way. We will lose jobs in this country to the United States. We have accredited laboratories and expertise in this area.
