Water Sector Reforms: Motion (Resumed) (20 Nov 2014)

Jerry Buttimer: I welcome the opportunity to speak in this debate. It is extraordinary that yesterday the Opposition claimed the Government was not listening, yet today the Chamber is bereft of Fianna Fáil, the Technical Group and a whole plethora of Independents. It underlines the fact that they were just playing to the gallery.

Water Sector Reforms: Motion (Resumed) (20 Nov 2014)

Jerry Buttimer: That is correct. I might disagree with Deputy Broughan on many things but I respect him immensely. As a Government, we have listened and realised that we made a mistake. The imagination of the Government has been used in coming up with a utility company that ticks the boxes for...

Jerry Buttimer: Well, you know, Deputy Broughan - I will conclude on this-----

Water Sector Reforms: Motion (Resumed) (20 Nov 2014)

Jerry Buttimer: I would rather stand for something than be a populist, opposing for the sake of opposition. I am not saying that you are, but I would much rather do that.

Water Sector Reforms: Motion (Resumed) (20 Nov 2014)

Jerry Buttimer: I would much rather do that, a Cheann Comhairle.

Water Sector Reforms: Motion (Resumed) (20 Nov 2014)

Jerry Buttimer: I will conclude on this. The job this Government got was to fix our country's economic fortunes. Together with the Irish people, since we came into Government in 2011, we have done that. The people have played a huge role but the Government has had a plan. The new proposal for Irish Water will be the continuation of that journey.
