The Arts: Motion [Private Members] (22 Jun 2016)

Peadar Tóibín: ...words "culture" and "heritage" have been drop-kicked from the Department's name. The Government in the past number of years has seen the arts sector as the first stop for cuts and budget reductions. The Arts Council has lost 27% of its budget since 2008, the Irish language has lost 51% of its budget since 2008 and the Heritage Council has lost over 60% of its funding since 2008. These...

Peadar Tóibín: ...State own 73% of the State's wealth, while the poorest 20% in the State had 0.2% of the wealth of the State. By any judgment, this divide is severe and shocking. He also stated that the combined wealth of the top 5% was almost double that of the entirety of middle earners - that is, the squeezed middle. According to Revenue data, the top 1% of income earners in Ireland had an average...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Public Procurement Contracts: Discussion (21 Oct 2014)

Peadar Tóibín: ...small businesses. I am glad to see moves are afoot to change that. One of the great debates in this committee is how much money leaks from the State in State procurement. If we have roughly €8.5 billion, we have heard estimates of 28%, 27% and 20%. Some people save 15% on an island basis, others say 5%. It is a key piece of information because it determines policy by the State....

Other Questions: Youth Unemployment Numbers (2 Oct 2012)

Peadar Tóibín: The youth unemployment figures are unbelievable. A total of 5 million young people are unemployed in Europe currently while, in this State, 30% of young people are unemployed with 50% long-term unemployed. The Minister mentioned the preparatory action. The Commission has allocated €4 million for this, which equates to 80 cent per unemployed youth in the State. That is laughable if...
