Brian Lenihan Jnr: Using the data in the Pre-Budget 2009 income tax ready reckoner, an increase in the employee (PAYE) credit from €1,830 to €1,921.50 would cost about €130 million in a full year. The cost quoted is provisional, subject to revision and estimated to the nearest €5 million. The ready reckoner is available on my Department's website, at www.finance.gov.ie.

Brian Lenihan Jnr: The level at which interest repayments can be claimed against tax for residential rental properties was reduced from 100% to 75% in section 5 of the Finance Act 2009 at an estimated full year yield of €95 million. Mr. Barry O'Leary: I would not say it is abused. I do not know whether there is a matter of misinterpretation. If the amount returned was €5 million out of claims totalling €200 million, there will always be that variance. Like anything else, we are getting down to fine lines about what is scientific discovery, for example. We are not privy to the individual cases.

Brian Lenihan Jnr: The Deputy's question is concerned with an increase of 5% in the tax rates that currently apply to deposit interest. I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that, on the basis of an estimated yield of €525 million from DIRT in 2008, the additional yield would be of the order of €130 million, assuming no behavioural change on the part of depositors.
