...did the super sixes at Christmas, when all the supermarkets followed one another like sheep, the people who depended on the traditional wholesale market in Smithfield could not sell their product because the canny traders in Moore Street went into the local discounters, bought the products off the shelf, sold them on their stalls and made more money than if they had bought the product in...

Seanad: Order of Business (15 Apr 2015)

Ivana Bacik: ...of the Government's programme for commemoration, it would be timely to have another on this matter. I welcomed in this House, as did others, the allocation of funding to preserve the building on Moore Street, which is of such historical significance, because it is where the leaders of the Rising met. There are further proposals on the table for buildings on Moore Street. I would like to...

Enda Kenny: ...give the Deputy an accurate date for it but it is his intention to deal with it. The national monuments Bill is for publication later this year. With regard to the question on Nos. 14 to 17 Moore Street, it is a national monument. Attempts have been made to deal with the issue over the past dozen years, but it is not all within the remit of Government as the Deputy is aware, as it...

Brendan Howlin: ...the Deputy for the offer. It is something I will bring to the Cabinet sub-committee on the 1916 Rising commemoration. We certainly intend as a Government to ensure there will be a fitting site on Moore Street and that it will not be in its current state by next year.

Sandra McLellan: ...by the National Museum as the most important historic site in modern Irish history has fallen into complete disrepair in an increasingly derelict site. I refer to the 1916 national monument in Moore Street, with which the Minister and her Department are familiar. The disgraceful derelict state of the national monument and the recent failed land swap proposal is proof that its current...

Aodhán Ó Ríordáin: ...question of this island being part of an empire was one question that many sought answers to. They took that question apart in the trenches of the western front, in Gallipoli, at the Somme, in the rubble of Sackville Street, in the GPO and on Moore Street. Our memory project, in the decade of commemorations, will remember all of them. The expertise of our cultural institutions and the...

Mary Lou McDonald: ...of works in anticipation of next year. No better body than the OPW to be in charge of such works. Its excellence as a State body is well established. The Minister of State did not mention Moore Street, the national monument and the terraced areas. The Minister of State is aware that this is an area of some controversy. He may not be aware of it, but Kilmainham is not in my...

Mary Lou McDonald: ...sub-committee is only occurring now, a little over one year from the centenary in Easter 2016? It seems to be remarkably tardy. I know several people, not least because of the ongoing controversy about the Moore Street monument and the proposed development, are concerned that the Government appears to have been so slow in convening a meeting of the sub-committee.

There was no mention of the Moore Street national monument or Arbour Hill. It seems that there are many gaps in the first instance. It also seems that we are way behind in the preparations.

Enda Kenny: ...to vote in a by-election. In respect of the work the Minister of State, Deputy Deenihan, did as the former Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, he had in place a situation for the development of Moore Street, the protection of the national monument and the developments around that, which were not in his control. Obviously, that is not going ahead in the way in which it was...

Heather Humphreys: I want to be clear that I am not abandoning the Moore Street project. As I said, I was disappointed when the decision was arrived at by the city council. I have met with both groups of relatives, one of which is entirely supportive of the proposals for the national monument. They are keen that it should progress. I have also met with Dublin City Council's Moore Street advisory committee...

Éamon Ó Cuív: I support what Senator Ó Murchú has said regarding Moore Street. We need to find a resolution. If everybody is around the table and they stay there until they solve it, I have no doubt they will do so. Between now and 2016, it would also be a good idea to develop a trail of all the 1916 sites around Dublin and around the country. County Kerry is involved because of Roger...

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: When in government, Fianna Fáil could have issued a compulsory purchase order and acquired Moore Street and the surrounding historic lanes from NAMA. The current Government could, if it wanted, do exactly the same. However this is not happening. Instead, a bankrupt private developer was allowed to let this priceless historic quarter descend into a state of abject disrepair and decay....
