Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (9 Mar 2017)

Seán Fleming: It is a special report to which the committee will revert. Direct provision has been raised on a number of occasions and members also wish to deal with Bord na gCon. Given that members have been asking for a meeting to discuss direct provision for several months, perhaps we will discuss the specific chapter on direct provision in the Comptroller and Auditor General's report on 13 April.

Seán Fleming: ...people who arrive here versus the other accommodation provided. The other issue I wish to mention, which I believe RTÉ highlighted, is that we had a detailed discussion regarding the costs of direct provision, and it emerged long after our meeting that the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade had allocated part of its overseas development aid, ODA, budget towards provision for...

Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (9 Mar 2017)

Seán Fleming: But we did not sign off on the work programme. The three issues are direct provision, Bord na gCon and the special report on the redress scheme. Is that the right title?

Chapter 20 - PRSI Contributions by the Self-Employed

(29 Nov 2018)

Seán Fleming: It is amazing. I wish to move on to aspects of the Vote. On page 24, it shows there was higher expenditure on direct provision allowance. Is that in the form of supplementary welfare payments through the community welfare office? I assume it is for asylum centres.

Seán Fleming: ...8 million, was higher than the estimate by €1.1 million. There were higher average recipient numbers, at 2,620. I have checked this figure out and, at the end of last year, there were 5,096 people in direct provision. I know that it includes 801 families. Are they individuals or could a parent be claiming for a spouse?

Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (23 Mar 2017)

Seán Fleming: The secretariat is trying to tie down dates for Bord na gCon, which will hopefully come back to us tomorrow, and the Department of Justice and Equality regarding direct provision. We suggested last week that if we get a date for those meetings on 4 May or 11 May we can move the Revenue Commissioners and the Department of Finance back a week.

Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (21 Nov 2019)

Seán Fleming: ...There is also the next item, No. 2560B, from Mr. Aidan O'Driscoll, Secretary General of the Department of Justice and Equality, dated 5 November, providing information requested by the committee on direct provision centres. This is also to feed into our periodic report, which we will publish next week. For the benefit of people watching the meeting, I wish to highlight a couple of...

Seán Fleming: ...issue. This matter has been referred to us by the Garda Síochána and we have to deal with it. Separately, we have a meeting with the Department of Justice and Equality on its Vote and the issue of direct provision on Thursday, 11 May. When do members want to start scheduling the meeting we were talking about?

Public Accounts Committee: 2017 Annual Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General and Appropriation Accounts
Vote 24 - Justice and Equality
(4 Apr 2019)

Seán Fleming: For the information of people watching, I thank the witnesses for the schedule they circulated regarding the number of people in direct provision and asylum centres. We will note and publish this today. We asked for figures on the various lengths of stay and this relates to the 6,093 people in the centres, 289 of whom have been there for more than four years, 146 for more than five years,...

Freedom of Information Act 2014: Motions (2 Apr 2015)

Seán Fleming: ...Equality was that third-party freedom of information requests would have the potential to delay judicial reviews of the organisation's decision-making, giving rise to significant additional costs in direct provision. Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (19 Jan 2017)

Seán Fleming: ...and will circulate them to us with a draft timetable and at next week's meeting, we will amend and finalise matters. I want to get agreement for one meeting. Perhaps we will pick the issue of direct provision. Will we go with that? I think two meetings are booked - one on the sale of the Government jet and the other on the change of rostering in the public service. I will make one...

Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (29 Mar 2017)

Seán Fleming: We have the Department of Justice and Equality. Specifically, there is a chapter in the Comptroller and Auditor General's report on direct provision. We always deal with the chapter in the Department when it is here but, obviously, there will be a special focus on the chapter in the report on that day. The next item is from Deputy Cullinane on an RTE story of a possible loss of...

Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (9 Mar 2017)

Seán Fleming: ...yet to be confirmed but they will be institutes of technology. There is a gap on 13 April which we have not filled. The committee can consider one of three different issues on that date, namely, direct provision, Bord na gCon or the Comptroller and Auditor General's report, to be published today, on the redress scheme. As this report, which is a look-back on the entire scheme concluding...

Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (19 Jan 2017)

Seán Fleming: ...in the system. We could take funding of local authorities and the land aggregation scheme. There is a chapter on that. Alternatively, we could take the procurement and management of contracts for direct provision straight away. We need to get about two meetings up and running straight away and then we have a little breathing time to put the timetable on the rest of our work.
