Seán Fleming: ...people who arrive here versus the other accommodation provided. The other issue I wish to mention, which I believe RTÉ highlighted, is that we had a detailed discussion regarding the costs of direct provision, and it emerged long after our meeting that the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade had allocated part of its overseas development aid, ODA, budget towards provision for...

Seán Fleming: It is amazing. I wish to move on to aspects of the Vote. On page 24, it shows there was higher expenditure on direct provision allowance. Is that in the form of supplementary welfare payments through the community welfare office? I assume it is for asylum centres.

I have checked this figure out and, at the end of last year, there were 5,096 people in direct provision. I know that it includes 801 families. Are they individuals or could a parent be claiming for a spouse?

I ask Mr. O'Toole to explain the rationale; he may...

Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (6 Apr 2017)

Seán Fleming: ...with Bord na gCon. On 11 May 2017, we will deal with the Department of Justice and Equality appropriation accounts for 2015. There is a specific chapter dealing with the procurement and management of contracts for direct provision. Sometime around the date of the last meeting, we noted the report by An Garda Síochána into the Templemore issue. There is also the issue of the...

Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (30 Mar 2017)

Seán Fleming: ...issue. This matter has been referred to us by the Garda Síochána and we have to deal with it. Separately, we have a meeting with the Department of Justice and Equality on its Vote and the issue of direct provision on Thursday, 11 May. When do members want to start scheduling the meeting we were talking about?

Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (29 Mar 2017)

Seán Fleming: ...already scheduled and this is smack bang within the Vote. The Department is scheduled to be here for its routine visit and it will deal separately with procurement and management of contracts for direct provision on the day. The next item is a letter from-----

Seán Fleming: We have the Department of Justice and Equality. Specifically, there is a chapter in the Comptroller and Auditor General's report on direct provision. We always deal with the chapter in the Department when it is here but, obviously, there will be a special focus on the chapter in the report on that day. The next item is from Deputy Cullinane on an RTE story of a possible loss of...

Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (23 Mar 2017)

Seán Fleming: The secretariat is trying to tie down dates for Bord na gCon, which will hopefully come back to us tomorrow, and the Department of Justice and Equality regarding direct provision. We suggested last week that if we get a date for those meetings on 4 May or 11 May we can move the Revenue Commissioners and the Department of Finance back a week.

As this report, which is a look-back on the entire scheme concluding...

Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (9 Mar 2017)

Seán Fleming: It is a special report to which the committee will revert. Direct provision has been raised on a number of occasions and members also wish to deal with Bord na gCon. Given that members have been asking for a meeting to discuss direct provision for several months, perhaps we will discuss the specific chapter on direct provision in the Comptroller and Auditor General's report on 13 April.

Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (9 Mar 2017)

Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (9 Mar 2017)

Seán Fleming: But we did not sign off on the work programme. The three issues are direct provision, Bord na gCon and the special report on the redress scheme. Is that the right title?

Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (2 Feb 2017)

Seán Fleming: Okay, that is fine. On Thursday, 13 April we will meet the Department of Justice and Equality to discuss the Department's Vote and the procurement and management of contracts for the direct provision system. That meeting has not been fully confirmed as yet but that is the plan. We are meeting the Department of Justice and Equality today but that is strictly to deal with the prisons issue....
