Seanad: Order of Business (1 Apr 2009)

Mark Daly: The regime change that is coming from——

Seanad: Order of Business (1 Apr 2009)

Mark Daly: When Standard & Poor's downgraded Spain's credit rating from AAA to AA+ on 19 January last, it made no such call. On 14 January, when they did the same to Greece, they made no such call or interference in the political process or in the sovereign government. I call on the Leader to ensure every time a foreign media or financial institution attacks Ireland's reputation, the Government press...

Seanad: Order of Business (2 Apr 2009)

Mark Daly: I ask the Deputy Leader to raise the statement by the Israeli Foreign Minister that he sees no benefit in giving concessions. The Israelis have not been known for giving concessions recently and their recent invasion of Gaza and its strangling of the Palestinian population by ensuring no food aid got into Gaza in the five months previous to the first rocket attack by Hamas in many months...

Seanad: Order of Business (2 Apr 2009)

Mark Daly: ——that there would be no access to European markets by the Israelis unless they give access to food for the Palestinians. I raise the matter of a very disturbing questionnaire sent by the FÁS branch of SIPTU to councillors throughout the country. The objective of this questionnaire is clear when one reads the questions — for example, question No. 10 reads: "Do you agree with workers...

Seanad: Order of Business (2 Apr 2009)

Mark Daly: That is the point. SIPTU will go around the country advising all its members that this questionnaire must be responded to. To say the questions are unbalanced is putting it mildly. It is not a questionnaire, it is a veiled threat. I ask the Deputy Leader to take up this matter with the Minister of State, Deputy Billy Kelleher, with a view to questioning, through his good offices, SIPTU as...

Seanad: Order of Business (7 Apr 2009)

Mark Daly: I welcome the news on cystic fibrosis and the innovative way the Government is proceeding by providing that beds will be available and payment will be made in 2011. I was contacted by a number of families over the weekend on this issue and I am glad the Minister will proceed on it. It would have been a travesty for her not to proceed with it because it is regrettable that the life...

Seanad: Order of Business (7 Apr 2009)

Mark Daly: The provision of this unit will go a long way towards giving people who have cystic fibrosis a chance of a better quality of life and a longer life. The next step in this process is the provision of an improved organ donation system so that those patients can receive organs and can fulfil their great potential.

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Apr 2009)

Mark Daly: The pot is calling the kettle black.

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Apr 2009)

Mark Daly: Senator Buttimer is over his two minutes.

Seanad: Order of Business (23 Apr 2009)

Mark Daly: Several Members referred to economists as the new high priests. I am reminded of the observation that if all the economists in the world were laid end to end they would not reach a conclusion. Senator Ross referred to the €7.5 billion which we gave to the banks as a loan. We must remind the public that the banks are paying €500 million a year for the use of the money and that amount...

Seanad: Order of Business (23 Apr 2009)

Mark Daly: What I said is a fact. High food and clothing prices in the Republic of Ireland are an important issue. The answer to the problem came yesterday in Tesco's annual report. Tesco accounts for 27.5% of the Irish market. This year the company's profit increased by 5.2% and its worldwide profit was £3.1 billion. Nevertheless, Irish suppliers of goods and services to Tesco are going out of...

Seanad: Order of Business (23 Apr 2009)

Mark Daly: It is our job to police the playground. Irish brands and jobs are being destroyed by Tesco. While we welcomed the company to Ireland, we did so on the understanding that Irish customers would get better service and cheaper food. That has not happened. Dublin Meath Growers have been put out of business by the action of multiple retailers. Irish workers are being threatened because...

Seanad: Order of Business (23 Apr 2009)

Mark Daly: These are facts.

Seanad: Order of Business (23 Apr 2009)

Mark Daly: When 2,000 jobs are lost because of the action of Tesco and other multiple retailers we have a duty to speak about it in this House.

Seanad: Order of Business (23 Apr 2009)

Mark Daly: We can speak in this House but suppliers cannot. They have appeared before a joint committee but they cannot speak out. They say they have been asked for promotion payments, or what used be known as "hello money". To speak out against a company which takes 25% of one's production would be commercial suicide.

Seanad: Order of Business (23 Apr 2009)

Mark Daly: It is our duty to continue to investigate why multiple retailers are treating Ireland as a suburb of Manchester rather than a separate country.

Seanad: Order of Business (23 Apr 2009)

Mark Daly: They are now trying to source UK international brands rather than Irish international brands and putting our workers out of business.

Seanad: Order of Business (23 Apr 2009)

Mark Daly: I ask the Leader to discuss this issue with the Minister and investigate it further. The Joint Committee on Enterprise, Trade and Employment tried to do so and had to meet in camera to get to the bottom of the matter.

Seanad: Order of Business (23 Apr 2009)

Mark Daly: If further investigation is required it should be carried out. I know the Minister has been investigating this matter and I urge her to continue to do so.

Seanad: Order of Business (30 Apr 2009)

Mark Daly: With regard to Senator Buttimer's point about celebrities and the HSE, will the Deputy Leader inquire about that list of celebrities and how many of them have health insurance for private health care and how many do not? Do they have any genuine knowledge of what people must endure when they go through the system, in some cases due to HSE inefficiencies? It is craziness of the highest order...
