Seanad: Order of Business (12 Nov 2008)

Mark Daly: I support my fellow county man and Opposition Member, Senator Paul Coghlan, in his call for the introduction of what is commonly known as the auctioneers' Bill. In light of the fact that so many auctioneering firms are closing down in the present economic climate, it is incumbent on us to ensure that the deposits of house purchasers are protected. The current insurance requirements under...

Seanad: Order of Business (13 Nov 2008)

Mark Daly: On a point of order, the campaign for plain English prompts me to ask my learned colleague if, while we can understand all the university colleagues, some of the words——

Seanad: Order of Business (13 Nov 2008)

Mark Daly: ——he has used so far——

Seanad: Order of Business (19 Nov 2008)

Mark Daly: I hope tomorrow we will see significant political developments in the North. I seek a debate on Irish unity and welcome the new publication by Dr. Richard Humphreys, Countdown to Unity: Debating Irish Reunification, which was launched by the former Taoiseach, Deputy Bertie Ahern, yesterday. It sets out practical steps, a road map and a programme on how reunification can be achieved in a...

Seanad: Order of Business (19 Nov 2008)

Mark Daly: I am, but I am also seeking a debate on the fact that at the same time we seek to unite we also divide. The electoral commission has again proposed that Leitrim should remain divided, despite the fact that 14,000 people signed a petition against it. The constituency commission got 327 submissions, of which 241 related to Leitrim alone. Senator John Ellis spoke many times in this House and...

Seanad: Order of Business (2 Dec 2008)

Mark Daly: I support my colleague Senator Leyden in his call to bring the Minister for Health and Children to the House to discuss the Health Service Executive and waste therein. This is prevalent in my county of Kerry where we have had numerous reports on the Kenmare hospital. Thousands of euro were spent and plans were drawn up more than 33 years ago. Deputy Jackie Healy-Rae got a deal in 1997. He...

Seanad: Order of Business (2 Dec 2008)

Mark Daly: I thank Senator Buttimer for the contribution. We have no hospital and no completion date. I applaud Deputy Michael Lowry.

Seanad: Order of Business (2 Dec 2008)

Mark Daly: Deputy Michael Lowry has managed to secure a similar deal for Tipperary North, which has completed, in Borrisokane, phase one of its hospital. Phase two is due for completion in 2013. Yet in Kenmare, Deputy Healy-Rae is not being treated with equity by the Minister for Health and Children and, unfortunately, by the Government.

Seanad: Order of Business (2 Dec 2008)

Mark Daly: There is no completion date for the hospital in Kenmare and, indeed, no start date. I ask the Leader to invite the Minister for Health and Children to come to the House to discuss that issue.

Seanad: Order of Business (2 Dec 2008)

Mark Daly: Senator Buttimer will be on "Oireachtas Report" tonight.

Seanad: Order of Business (3 Dec 2008)

Mark Daly: I thank the people of Valentia in Kerry for their work and assistance to me in helping to retain the coastguard services in Valentia and Malin Head. I thank the Leader who afforded so much time to the issue. I thank also my Seanad colleagues on the Government side of the House, as well as Senator Paul Coghlan and that wily old fox, Senator Joe O'Toole, who has been raising this issue for...

Seanad: Order of Business (3 Dec 2008)

Mark Daly: It is not a U-turn.

Seanad: Order of Business (4 Dec 2008)

Mark Daly: I agree with Senator Quinn regarding the removal of cribs from shops and hospitals. As a republic, it is our job to welcome visitors and to respect their traditions and cultures but I also hope they respect ours. The replacement and removal of cribs at Christmas time is akin to taking Christ out of Christmas. Where that happens, he is being replaced by the new god of materialism, which is...

Seanad: The Economy: Statements (5 Dec 2008)

Mark Daly: Welcome, Joe.

Seanad: Order of Business (27 Jan 2009)

Mark Daly: I support Senator Eugene Regan's point about the situation in the Holy Land. The Israeli ambassador and the representative from Fatah appeared before the Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and to say it was a full and frank exchange of views is putting it mildly. To be balanced, I told the Fatah representative that their problem was that they were corrupt in the extreme and this was the...

Seanad: Order of Business (27 Jan 2009)

Mark Daly: The ambassador eventually admitted that there was a phosphorus element in the shells the Israelis were using in Gaza. I am pleased to report that at a subsequent meeting of the Joint Committee on European Affairs, the Fianna Fáil Senators——

Seanad: Order of Business (27 Jan 2009)

Mark Daly: In reply to Senator Buttimer, I hope he is hiding the Cork hurlers.

Seanad: Order of Business (27 Jan 2009)

Mark Daly: At that meeting of the Joint Committee on European Affairs, Fianna Fáil Deputies Timmy Dooley and Michael Mulcahy proposed that the European Union and the United Nations Secretary General should compile a report on human rights abuses in Israel and Palestine and if human rights abuses were confirmed, Article 2 of our preferential trade agreement with Israel would be invoked and its...

Seanad: Order of Business (27 Jan 2009)

Mark Daly: I regret that Fine Gael did not support the Fianna Fáil motion. Next month, I will put down the exact motion again at the EU-Mediterranean economic forum meeting. I hope we will get some support from the Opposition on that occasion.
