Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Transposition of IORP II Directive: Discussion (7 Nov 2019)

John Curran: Irish Life has also indicated that if the directive were to be implemented in its entirety, a full audit could cost up to €3,000. Is that correct?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Transposition of IORP II Directive: Discussion (7 Nov 2019)

John Curran: Why in God's name would anybody spend €6,000 if €3,000 was going to go towards that audit? It seems extremely disproportionate. The question I really want to put to our guests is whether the figure of €3,000 is based in reality. It seems excessive for that level of contribution.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Transposition of IORP II Directive: Discussion (7 Nov 2019)

John Curran: Is that the expectation from the directive?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Transposition of IORP II Directive: Discussion (7 Nov 2019)

John Curran: Given that we have 110,000 of 150,000 in such schemes, which is the bulk of them, are our guests aware of any obvious practical impediment to carrying out that cost-benefit analysis?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Transposition of IORP II Directive: Discussion (7 Nov 2019)

Illegal Drugs: Motion [Private Members] (5 Nov 2019)

John Curran: This debate was not just about a funding issue. It is a real plea from Members. I stated at the outset that I do not doubt the Minister of State's sincerity and integrity but I observed that with the exception of the Minister for Justice and Equality, her colleagues did not come into the House to support her. She has been let down in terms of the budgetary process. They have not received...

John Curran: I am sorry, a Cheann Comhairle. I should have said during the debate that we are accepting the amendment.

Illegal Drugs: Motion [Private Members] (5 Nov 2019)

John Curran: I thank all my colleagues and the Members of the House who contributed to this debate, and the Minister of State, Deputy Catherine Byrne, and the Minister, Deputy Flanagan, for their attendance. The Minister of State will have to recognise the fact that so many Members wanted to contribute to the debate. There is a real issue there. I set out at the beginning the growth of this problem,...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Social and Affordable Housing (5 Nov 2019)

John Curran: I want to look at this from a Dublin perspective as house prices here are considerably higher than in many other parts of the country. There is a substantial cohort of people who are squeezed out of the housing market and consigned to life in private rental accommodation. The irony is that often the rent they pay is greater than a mortgage repayment. The Minister has clearly identified...
