Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Public Health and the Commercial Determinants of Health: Discussion (14 Feb 2024)

Seán Crowe: The more the Deputy looks at the clock, the more time will fly.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Public Health and the Commercial Determinants of Health: Discussion (14 Feb 2024)

Seán Crowe: This is a large area. We have probably only touched on a small part of it. We could discuss the food people get in hospital after having serious operations. Even if they were healthy, they would not be able to eat some of the food offered in a number of our public hospitals. I am glad that some members touched on the question of poverty. The mortality rate of someone who is poor is...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Public Health and the Commercial Determinants of Health: Discussion (14 Feb 2024)

Seán Crowe: On the issue of subsidies, one of the current challenges is that, according to a farmer spokesperson I heard recently speaking on the price of vegetables, the multiples are undercutting the cost for a farmer to actually grow those vegetables. That has to be put into the equation. To get back to a point I made earlier to the Minister of State, some people have no experience of eating...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Public Health and the Commercial Determinants of Health: Discussion (14 Feb 2024)

Seán Crowe: I am conscious that no one should be going hungry but those who are living in a hotel room with their family and have access only to a kettle are reliant on processed food, takeaway food and so on. I am conscious of the proportion of Irish people who are stuck in that situation.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Public Health and the Commercial Determinants of Health: Discussion (14 Feb 2024)

Seán Crowe: I would like to think we have started a conversation. I know members would like to come in again, and I would also like to ask more questions. It is something we can maybe return to in the future, but this has been a useful engagement. I thank the representatives of the Health Promotion Alliance Ireland and Dr. Norah Campbell for their engagement with the committee.

Reform of the Television Licence Fee Model: Motion [Private Members] (13 Feb 2024)

Seán Crowe: No one would argue that the current situation and the institutional culture in RTÉ are healthy, acceptable or sustainable. The deficit in TV licence revenue last year indicates that some 120,000 people have chosen not to renew their licence. I cannot blame them. Financial scandals at RTÉ rocked people's trust and confidence in the national broadcaster and the television licence...

Written Answers — Department of Education and Skills: School Equipment (13 Feb 2024)

Seán Crowe: 275. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills the reason a student requiring hearing aids would have to wait three months for software to be purchased for use with a system (details supplied); his views on whether a process taking three months in an academic year presents an unacceptable barrier to education for students with hearing difficulties; the changes she plans to make to...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Business of Joint Committee (7 Feb 2024)

Seán Crowe: Apologies have been received from Deputies Cullinane and Shortall. Before we get to the main item on today's agenda, are the minutes of the committee meetings on 17 and 23 January 2024, which have been circulated to members for consideration, agreed? Agreed.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Health Needs of Persons with Dementia and the Services Available: Discussion (7 Feb 2024)

Seán Crowe: I thank Mr. Dunne very much. I am going to open up the discussion to members. I think someone's mobile phone is ringing on silent, so I ask that it would be turned off as it impacts on the broadcasting system. We will go straight into questions.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Health Needs of Persons with Dementia and the Services Available: Discussion (7 Feb 2024)

Seán Crowe: Reference has been made to the different approaches of the CHOs and concerns about regional health authorities in that regard. Please come back to us about this matter as the organisations present probably do not have time now. As a committee, we engage all of the time about these issues, particularly the roll-out of the RHAs. If our guests have particular concerns about this area of...
