- Committee on European Union Affairs: Engagement with Representatives of the European Committee of the Regions (8 Oct 2025)
Seán Crowe: I was on the Committee of the Regions many years ago, a bit before Deputy Lahart. They were frustrating times because you could see the potential of the committee but there was something missing. One of the things I found to be missing - and we touched on this morning - was that there is not always a dedicated officer in councils. There are eight of them, which is a big weakness. I get...
- Written Answers — Department of Justice and Equality: Local Community Safety Partnerships (7 Oct 2025)
Seán Crowe: 390. To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality the date by which he will appoint the members of the new South Dublin Local Community Safety Partnership so they may meet and begin their work. [52941/25]
- Written Answers — Department of Health: Patient Safety (7 Oct 2025)
Seán Crowe: 549. To ask the Minister for Health the date by which it is expected to publish the complaints and patient safety policy. [52940/25]
- Written Answers — Department of Health: Disease Management (7 Oct 2025)
Seán Crowe: 601. To ask the Minister for Health if her Department is concerned regarding the rise in tuberculosis cases in the State, particularly drug-resistant strains; if she will commit to public funding of the National TB Centre and Clinical Team at St James’s Hospital and allocating resources to the Irish Mycobacterial Reference Laboratory at St James’s Hospital, given that Ireland is...
- Situation in Gaza: Statements (1 Oct 2025)
Seán Crowe: Any plan that could end the wholesale slaughter of tens of thousands of civilians in Gaza is to be welcomed. The world has watched a genocide as children starve and aid rots just miles away. I welcome that a core part of the 20-point plan is to end the weaponisation of aid from the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation and place it in the hands of the UN and the Red Crescent. However, for any...
- Committee on European Union Affairs: Eurofound: Discussion (1 Oct 2025)
Seán Crowe: The witnesses are very welcome. The housing situation was mentioned. It is a challenge right across Europe but particularly acute in Ireland. We have heard surveys from different organisations on the challenge facing those affected. Clearly, there is a problem in that area of work. I presume Eurofound, as an organisation, does research in relation to it. What way is it fed back into the...
- Committee on European Union Affairs: Eurofound: Discussion (1 Oct 2025)
Seán Crowe: One of the challenges in this city, although not exclusively here, is that large companies are buying up properties for their employees. Is that a challenge in other jurisdictions? Again, does Eurofound make recommendations in that regard or does it just note it? What is the pathway for concerns that people would have about something like that? I refer to the fact that the local...
- Committee on European Union Affairs: Eurofound: Discussion (1 Oct 2025)
Seán Crowe: We know that in Ireland, if people have a disability, they are less likely to have a job. Has Eurofound done research on that, and pathways to remove those barriers, across Europe? If it has done that research, how does that go into the political debate and particularly impact on governments which, ultimately, are the ones that will have to remove those barriers to those with a disability?
- Committee on European Union Affairs: Eurofound: Discussion (1 Oct 2025)
Seán Crowe: We are told that it is a priority of the Government. In Ireland about 1 million people are impacted when we include family members of people with a disability or people with an age profile that means they require care. It is a huge issue for society. If we want social cohesion and to move forward in an inclusive society then clearly we need to be addressing this as a matter of urgency.
- Committee on European Union Affairs: Eurofound: Discussion (1 Oct 2025)
Seán Crowe: To move to a different issue, there were media reports today about a high turnover of workers in the Irish workplace, with large numbers of people changing jobs. Is there research on why that is happening? Approximately three out of five workers are changing jobs. In some cases, it is because of promotion or moving sideways but there is huge fluidity. Is that normal or is it unique to Ireland?
- Committee on European Union Affairs: Eurofound: Discussion (1 Oct 2025)
Seán Crowe: I have one question on research in the context of migration. How important is it that workers feel welcome? Has Eurofound looked at that issue? There is a narrative in some countries, which I can name if necessary, which holds that foreign workers are a burden, a danger, suspect, different and so on. Has Mr. Kalfin done research on that? What are the recommendations that are going through...
- Committee on European Union Affairs: Eurofound: Discussion (1 Oct 2025)
Seán Crowe: We talked earlier about how there is so much information and research going on that it is hard to keep abreast of it. We had the Chair of the transport committee here earlier on. This is the European affairs committee and if there is research it would be really useful if Mr. Kalfin's agency fed it into us. I do not know if it happens but if there is research on transport or housing there...
- Committee on European Union Affairs: Eurofound: Discussion (1 Oct 2025)
Seán Crowe: Okay, I thank Mr. Kalfin.
- Written Answers — Department of Education and Skills: Pupil-Teacher Ratio (1 Oct 2025)
Seán Crowe: 66. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills to examine the case of a school (details supplied) who lost a teacher due to student numbers in 2024 and risk doing so again in 2026, if the current rules on student numbers to teacher places are applied; if she agrees that this runs contrary to government commitments to reduce the pupil teacher ratio and target large class sizes; her views...
- Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (30 Sep 2025)
Seán Crowe: Is that not a healthy thing? We do not have to go outside the party.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Engagement with Institute of Public Health (30 Sep 2025)
Seán Crowe: Listening to what the witnesses are saying about sharing data, I would like to hear what the barriers are. Let us take St. James's Hospital and St. Luke's Hospital, which deals with cancer. One part of St. James's Hospital does not talk to another part in that they do not have a seamless connection. If I went for bloods in St. Luke's, my urologist in St. James's would not be able to get...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Engagement with Institute of Public Health (30 Sep 2025)
Seán Crowe: Would it help to have a common health identifier number, for instance, or would it be better if we could anonymise access? For instance, it does not make sense that we would not share data or information on particular types of cancers and what can work and that who had gathered the research on this would not be able to share information.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Engagement with Institute of Public Health (30 Sep 2025)
Seán Crowe: On access to medicines and treatments that people really need which are available in one jurisdiction but can throw up all sorts of bureaucratic barriers and delays, I gave the example last week with the shared island unit of a number of young people who have Duchenne muscular dystrophy. There is a drug named givinostat, which is available in the North but not in the South. Have the...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Update on Key Issues Relating to the Health Service: Discussion (24 Sep 2025)
Seán Crowe: My question relates to the residential nursing homes. We heard earlier on about there being no wrong door. Unfortunately, in many cases, particularly those private ones because of the lack of public beds, people have been in the situation where their loved one has been in the wrong place. We heard earlier about some of the scandals relating to it. These are scandals like unsafe practices,...
