Euro Area Loan Facility Bill 2010: Second Stage (Resumed) (18 May 2010)

John Cregan: It wanted to sell bonds valued at €1 billion and €1.5 billion this morning, but it was unsure how the sale would go. The full €1.5 billion in bonds were snapped up as soon as they went on offer. This says something about our economy. We have regained the respect of the financial markets and of the people who buy bonds. The NTMA has borrowed two thirds of the required funding for...

Euro Area Loan Facility Bill 2010: Second Stage (Resumed) (18 May 2010)

John Cregan: The economists were negative and talking us down. One remarked that since the foundation of the State, we had failed to put people into work. There are 1.8 million employed in this country.

John Cregan: People appear to miss that fact.

Euro Area Loan Facility Bill 2010: Second Stage (Resumed) (18 May 2010)

John Cregan: We can believe the glass is half full or half empty. I have spoken already on the issue of the 430,000 people on the live register. I am saying now that there are 1.8 million people in this country in good employment, a fact which does not appear to be appreciated. One can say we blew the boom but we put 1 million people to work, decreased the national debt, increased the pension fund-----

Euro Area Loan Facility Bill 2010: Second Stage (Resumed) (18 May 2010)

John Cregan: -----and built new hospitals and schools. Before it is shouted from across the floor, we purchased electronic voting machines, which I fully accept. However, that is pretty minuscule in the overall context. As I said at the outset, Governments make mistakes. They are not infallible; they take the best advice at any given time and do not have the benefit of hindsight. We must make tough...

Tourism Industry: Motion (23 Mar 2010)

John Cregan: Like my colleague, I welcome the opportunity to say a few brief words in the House on this issue. I cannot quantify the impact a €10 travel tax will have on passenger numbers through our airports. With the greatest respect, I do not think people on the other side of the House can quantify it either.

Tourism Industry: Motion (23 Mar 2010)

John Cregan: What is coming across-----

Tourism Industry: Motion (23 Mar 2010)

John Cregan: What is coming across to me is that it is partly to blame for passenger numbers at our airports decreasing. I cannot quantify that and I do not know the impact it is having. However, as other speakers mentioned, at least this is an upfront charge. It is a tax and revenue for the country. During my time in local government if, at the time of the Estimates I was to suggest removing €125...

Tourism Industry: Motion (23 Mar 2010)

John Cregan: In my opinion, and from what the Minister of State said, the tax will not be withdrawn at this point in time. Therefore, it is futile to come to the House to suggest that it should when we all know it will not.

Tourism Industry: Motion (23 Mar 2010)

John Cregan: We could be far more positive for our region and we should promote ideas so our region can benefit from an improved position in Shannon Airport. I am greatly concerned about the future of Shannon Airport, as are all my colleagues in all parties in the mid-west region. Autonomy was mentioned and Cork Airport is in the same position as Shannon Airport. There does not seem to be a huge problem...

Tourism Industry: Motion (23 Mar 2010)

Tourism Industry: Motion (23 Mar 2010)
