Departmental Offices. (26 Nov 2009)

Seymour Crawford: I support Deputy Creed on his point on the need to utilise premises that are available for field staff. The obvious situation is where the Minister promised to keep open the office in Ballybay, which is the most important centre for the export of live cattle. It is important that people get to their place of work in time so that live exports happen on time. I hope this can be facilitated...

Live Exports. (26 Nov 2009)

Seymour Crawford: I mentioned Ballybay a few minutes ago and I will do so again.

Live Exports. (26 Nov 2009)

Seymour Crawford: One of the issues is that there seems to be a delay in getting live cattle to the marts. I urge the Minister to ensure his personnel are available at the earliest possible time to ensure that cattle going North for slaughter are able to be slaughtered on the same day. This is part of the problem. Some people in the job are afraid to open their mouths in case they would suffer as a result....

Order of Business (26 Nov 2009)

Seymour Crawford: In light of the ongoing activities of dissidents in Border areas and north of the Border, when will a Bill dealing with explosives come before the House so the issue can be discussed? More than 430,000 people are currently unemployed. Is there any legislation to insist the 70 jobs being created in Grove Turkeys in Monaghan be advertised and given to locally-skilled people rather than...

Order of Business (26 Nov 2009)

Seymour Crawford: There is a need for legislation to deal with the situation. Can the Tánaiste advise us when the social welfare Bill will come before the House to grant the promised increases in social welfare?

Farming and Agri-Food Sector: Statements (25 Nov 2009)

Seymour Crawford: I thank Deputy Creed for sharing time with me and allowing me to contribute to this debate. It is ludicrous that we have only one hour and 15 minutes to discuss such a major industry. There is no scope for savings under the farm-gate scheme. In the more than 40 years that I have been involved in farming, farm organisations and politics I have never seen so many young progressive farm...

Farming and Agri-Food Sector: Statements (25 Nov 2009)

Order of Business (25 Nov 2009)

Seymour Crawford: I attended a number of funerals recently at which the abuse of alcohol was freely discussed as the deaths of the people concerned resulted from that problem. Given that there is no backup support to address this issue in the health service——

Order of Business (25 Nov 2009)

Seymour Crawford: Yes, very much so. When will the sale of alcohol Bill be brought forward to enable us to discuss this issue? As we saw from television broadcasts and pictures in today's newspapers, thousands of people travelled North to buy alcohol yesterday. The abuse of alcohol is a major problem. It is as big a cause of death as the incidence of road accidents.

Flood Relief: Statements. (24 Nov 2009)

Seymour Crawford: When the flooding recedes, will the Minister of State seriously examine how rivers and streams are maintained? Nothing has been done in my county since 1985. Climate change is blamed and while I do not doubt it is a factor, we cannot ignore the maintenance of our rivers and streams. Much of the damage done to roads and so on in my county is a direct result of the lack of maintenance.

Flood Relief: Statements. (24 Nov 2009)

Seymour Crawford: It would have helped.

Flood Relief: Statements. (24 Nov 2009)

Seymour Crawford: Question 424: To ask the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government his plans to provide funding to refurbish and extend the town library in Belturbet, County Cavan; his views on whether with a major increase of the population in that town such a restructuring and provision of more books is important; if he will assure this Deputy that it will be priority when he gets an...

Water Pollution. (24 Nov 2009)

Seymour Crawford: This issue is frightening for my constituency of Cavan-Monaghan and other areas such as County Leitrim where soil types are difficult. I am glad to hear the Minister mention that developments such as reed bed technology can be extremely successful, as they have been beside my home. We must be given a commitment that nothing will be done that will make housing impossible in rural areas....
