Civil Partnership Bill 2010: Report and Final Stages (1 Jul 2010)

Seymour Crawford: I never mentioned the word "registrar". There has been a major lobby by all the churches, from bishops to ordinary members and many others, who asked that this exemption be considered. I may be the only Deputy who got this material but I assure the House I got it from Catholic bishops, Church of Ireland, Baptist and Presbyterian ministers, and many individuals throughout the country. I...

Planning and Development (Amendment) Bill [Seanad] 2009: Report and Final Stages (1 Jul 2010)

Seymour Crawford: One of my best friends has a house on top of a hill beside her former home. It fits in quite well. Her son wanted to build half way down the hill but was not allowed. Planners insisted that he build right at the bottom of the hill. His builder checked the foundations and found that piling would be necessary to build there. Planners do not get everything right. That was an example of...

Planning and Development (Amendment) Bill [Seanad] 2009: Report and Final Stages (1 Jul 2010)

Seymour Crawford: I would like to speak about the national spatial strategy.

Planning and Development (Amendment) Bill [Seanad] 2009: Report and Final Stages (1 Jul 2010)

Seymour Crawford: While it is very important to have structures in place, we must not forget that there are situations where it is very useful to provide planning that might not always fit into the box. Only for the planning that was given in Monaghan to small industries on people's own farms, we would have very little industry today. There has been much talk about the hub towns and other things, but no...

Central Bank Reform Bill 2010: Report Stage (Resumed) and Final Stages (1 Jul 2010)

Seymour Crawford: I support the amendments. The record of credit unions is superb. The situation in the movement is so different from what happened in other areas. Banks failed, the regulators failed but credit unions have not failed. We know there have been problems in some credit unions. In my own local credit union in Monaghan town there was a problem but the credit union officers dealt with it. When...

Order of Business. (1 Jul 2010)

Seymour Crawford: The Minister was too busy dealing with wildlife.

[28087/10]

Written Answers — Garda Equipment: Garda Equipment (30 Jun 2010)

Seymour Crawford: Question 55: To ask the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of patrol cars the gardaí have bought or have been bought for them in each of the past five years; if he is satisfied that proper tendering facilities have been used; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28088/10]

Written Answers — Health Services: Health Services (30 Jun 2010)

Seymour Crawford: Question 133: To ask the Minister for Health and Children the position regarding the case of a person (details supplied) in County Westmeath; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [28565/10]

Patient Safety: Motion (Resumed) (30 Jun 2010)

Seymour Crawford: I thank my colleague, Deputy Reilly, for bringing forward this important motion. He and many of my colleagues have dealt with most of the individual sections of the motion, so I propose to focus mainly on the issue of people's trust in the Health Service Executive having been shattered. The motion deals in the main with the lack of treatment or mistreatment of women in maternity services,...

Social Welfare (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2010: Report and Final Stages (30 Jun 2010)

Seymour Crawford: It is extremely important that this issue be re-examined. Gardaí are expending great time and effort in pursuing people for not paying fines. The Minister said last week that a person in receipt only of social welfare has just enough to live on, but the reality is that such people are being pursued in any case and are being imprisoned. If they are found to have received social welfare...

Social Welfare (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2010: Report and Final Stages (30 Jun 2010)

Seymour Crawford: I second the amendment. The Minister knows my feelings well on the issue of the self-employed and those in receipt of farm assist, where the delays are ridiculous, particularly for appeals. We can give out figures but unfortunately we can also give out figures for the large numbers who are committing suicide. We must be conscious of this and ensure people get what they need when they need it.

Order of Business (30 Jun 2010)

Seymour Crawford: First, I ask about the water services Bill, in light of the flagging of flat rate charges. When will that Bill be introduced so that we may discuss it? Second, I refer to the mental health Bill. Notwithstanding the terrible statistics my colleague, Deputy Dan Neville, read out today, the psychiatric unit of St Davnet's in Monaghan has been closed down. Services are being curtailed, a...

Order of Business (30 Jun 2010)

Seymour Crawford: When will the legal costs Bill be dealt with and those costs curtailed?

Saville Inquiry Report: Motion (30 Jun 2010)

Seymour Crawford: I welcome the opportunity to speak on this motion and thank the Taoiseach for agreeing with my party leader to bring it forward on an all-party basis today. None us will ever forget Bloody Sunday, and the sight of Fr. Daly trying to bring about peace in whatever way he could. We heard all the accusations and all the comments about who had done what and who was at fault. We had the Widgery...

Leaders' Questions. (30 Jun 2010)

Seymour Crawford: Get rid of half the managers.

Order of Business. (29 Jun 2010)

Seymour Crawford: I had intended to ask about the health information Bill.

Order of Business. (29 Jun 2010)

Seymour Crawford: An absolute commitment was given to us that no services would be removed from the health structure until better services were provided. Once again, however, services have been removed from Louth County Hospital.

Order of Business. (29 Jun 2010)

Seymour Crawford: In addition, ambulance services have been moved from Monaghan to Castleblayney, which is completely at variance with what we were promised and the information we were given.

Order of Business. (29 Jun 2010)

Seymour Crawford: When will the eligibility for health and personal social services Bill be brought before this House? That Bill, and the health information Bill, would allow us to discuss the outrageous conduct-----
