Questions on Promised Legislation (18 Apr 2018)

Andrew Doyle: I will check with my colleague, the Minister, Deputy Michael Creed, first.

Seanad: Fodder Shortage: Motion (18 Apr 2018)

Andrew Doyle: How long do I have?

Seanad: Fodder Shortage: Motion (18 Apr 2018)

Andrew Doyle: I hope I will get through it all. I hope Senators do not mind that I waited until everybody had made their contributions before thanking them. It was a far more measured debate than we had last night in the Dáil. Many of the points which were made are very reasonable and I would like to acknowledge that at the outset. Just before I start into my script, I would like to note that...

Fodder Shortage: Motion [Private Members] (17 Apr 2018)

Andrew Doyle: Sit down. Deputy Collins does not know what he is talking about.

Fodder Shortage: Motion [Private Members] (17 Apr 2018)

Andrew Doyle: I do not know how the Deputy has reached that conclusion.

Fodder Shortage: Motion [Private Members] (17 Apr 2018)

Andrew Doyle: I move amendment No. 2:To delete all words after “That Dáil Eireann” and substitute the following: “notes: — the major role agriculture plays in creating employment, generating economic activity and acting as a custodian of the countryside in Ireland; — the competitive advantage Ireland has in sustainable livestock production, particularly dairy,...

Fodder Shortage: Motion [Private Members] (17 Apr 2018)

Andrew Doyle: Sorry, Deputies Deering and Fitzpatrick.

Fodder Shortage: Motion [Private Members] (17 Apr 2018)

Andrew Doyle: Sorry.

Fodder Shortage: Motion [Private Members] (17 Apr 2018)

Andrew Doyle: This past year has seen exceptional bad weather which has brought unwelcome hardship to farming families. Both the Minister, Deputy Creed, and I have worked through our Department and with Teagasc, co-operatives, farming organisations and farmers themselves to find ways to help the farming community deal with this very challenging time. In response to the problems experienced in the west...

Order of Business (17 Apr 2018)

Andrew Doyle: As somebody who is an active farmer and currently purchasing fodder in the uplands in Wicklow, I take on board the Deputies' points and appreciate the issue in question. It is not fair to say that nothing has been done. There have been a number of incentives. Deputy Collins make shake his head-----

Order of Business (17 Apr 2018)

Andrew Doyle: I did not interrupt the Deputy. Anyone who says they could have predicted last October that there would be a fodder shortage in the month of April when normally we would have weather-----

Order of Business (17 Apr 2018)

Andrew Doyle: We will have a debate on this issue for two hours this evening.

Order of Business (17 Apr 2018)

Andrew Doyle: I know what is going on on the ground as much as any of the people who have spoken, probably more than most of them. If anybody says they could have predicted last October what the weather would be like in April and that we would have a late spring, they are in the wrong business.

Order of Business (17 Apr 2018)

Andrew Doyle: We have introduced measures including a fodder import subsidy and a fodder transport subsidy. The Deputy said animals are dying. There has always been a welfare helpline in place for people who have a dire need for fodder who will get it, regardless. There is fodder within the country that is still being moved throughout the country and what is being assisted is the cost to transport that.

Order of Business (17 Apr 2018)

Andrew Doyle: The Deputy does not know what he is talking about.

Topical Issue Debate: Compensation Schemes (8 Mar 2018)

Andrew Doyle: There is still 3 ft of snow outside my front door. Maybe we are a little more accustomed to it than others. A couple of my roofs are damaged. I appreciate the nature and extent of the damage. Throughout the period of adverse weather conditions last week caused by Storm Emma, the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine was directly involved in a co-ordinated response as a member...

Topical Issue Debate: Compensation Schemes (8 Mar 2018)

Andrew Doyle: In respect of the roads, the Taoiseach and the Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government, Deputy Eoghan Murphy, have requested all local authorities to assess the cost of the damage and the cost of engaging contractors and others to carry out work such as clearing roads. Some cannot do that yet because where I come from the roads are still white so no one can tell what damage has...

Topical Issue Debate: Waste Management (8 Mar 2018)

Andrew Doyle: The Deputy has certainly made the case very strongly on behalf of the people who have expressed concerns. I know Ballinasloe very well and I appreciate it has suffered from many issues, including bypasses, downturns in the economy and changes in employment structures. However, it is a town that is ideally placed to fight back, given its location. To reiterate, the planning permission...

Topical Issue Debate: Waste Management (8 Mar 2018)

Andrew Doyle: I will do my best.

Topical Issue Debate: Waste Management (8 Mar 2018)

Andrew Doyle: The Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment, Deputy Naughten, unfortunately is out of the country and is unavailable to respond in person. I have been given his speaking notes and will try to respond to any other issues the Deputy may raise in my later reply. I understand that Galway County Council has granted planning permission for a waste transfer station that will...
