- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Treatment of Rare Diseases: Discussion (15 Oct 2025)
- Manus Boyle: I thank the witnesses for coming in today. To be honest, this is totally new to me and makes hard listening. My fellow Senator who is not here today, Senator Teresa Costello, drew my attention to the situation with givinostat. On one of the first days I came here, Senator Costello had people in the audiovisual room where I met two lovely young fellas from Donegal from my own area. I...

- Manus Boyle: The issue is personal to me.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Treatment of Rare Diseases: Discussion (15 Oct 2025)
- Manus Boyle: As my fellow members of this committee said earlier, it should not be down to politicians to come in here to push for a drug for a child. I believe that the system is wrong. We should have a system whereby if a doctor recommends a person gets a drug that politicians are taken out of the equation. I know no more about givinostat than the professor would know about fishing or anything like...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Treatment of Rare Diseases: Discussion (15 Oct 2025)
- Manus Boyle: When a medical person like Professor Postma or a consultant recommends that a child or adult should get a drug, then the political end should be removed. It seems to me that it is all down to political pressure and the more political pressure applied, the greater chance - perhaps - of living.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Treatment of Rare Diseases: Discussion (15 Oct 2025)
- Manus Boyle: Earlier we talked about the early access scheme. We, as a committee, should push really hard for an early access scheme. I say that because of the experience of my cousin, who has now passed on. He was in America and the medical profession did everything they could for him when he was ill. He told me himself that he participated in clinical trials. He received this, that and the other,...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Treatment of Rare Diseases: Discussion (15 Oct 2025)
- Manus Boyle: We, as a committee, to help the organisations present, should work on securing an early access scheme too. Nobody wants to suffer in pain so the easier we can make anybody's life then the better and that is what we are all here for.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Treatment of Rare Diseases: Discussion (15 Oct 2025)
- Manus Boyle: Thank you.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Fisheries and Maritime Affairs: Quotas, Common Fisheries Policy and Sustainability Impact Assessment: Discussion (14 Oct 2025)
- Manus Boyle: I thank the Chair and everybody who is listening in. I know the whole fishing community around Ireland is looking in on this meeting here today. It is crucial. I wish Mr. Cormac Burke well. I know he had his operation on Thursday and I hope everything is going well. We are thinking of him. My first question is for Mr. O'Donnell. The Norwegians are overfishing mackerel stocks in Irish...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Fisheries and Maritime Affairs: Quotas, Common Fisheries Policy and Sustainability Impact Assessment: Discussion (14 Oct 2025)
- Manus Boyle: On the question of blocking access and imposing trade measures, what payback does Ireland get for letting the Norwegians in to access the blue whiting stock in our waters?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Fisheries and Maritime Affairs: Quotas, Common Fisheries Policy and Sustainability Impact Assessment: Discussion (14 Oct 2025)
- Manus Boyle: It is hard to believe.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Fisheries and Maritime Affairs: Quotas, Common Fisheries Policy and Sustainability Impact Assessment: Discussion (14 Oct 2025)
- Manus Boyle: They have let us down big time.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Fisheries and Maritime Affairs: Quotas, Common Fisheries Policy and Sustainability Impact Assessment: Discussion (14 Oct 2025)
- Manus Boyle: It makes no sense at all.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Fisheries and Maritime Affairs: Quotas, Common Fisheries Policy and Sustainability Impact Assessment: Discussion (14 Oct 2025)
- Manus Boyle: Can Mr. O'Donnell see this being stopped? Is Norway going to be stopped overfishing? Is there any way of doing it?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Fisheries and Maritime Affairs: Quotas, Common Fisheries Policy and Sustainability Impact Assessment: Discussion (14 Oct 2025)
- Manus Boyle: Can our Minister call for sanctions to be imposed?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Fisheries and Maritime Affairs: Quotas, Common Fisheries Policy and Sustainability Impact Assessment: Discussion (14 Oct 2025)
- Manus Boyle: What is going on is ridiculous. It was reported last week that the Norwegians had landed 40,000 tonnes of mackerel. That is our quota for the whole year and they landed it in one week. Something has to be done. We cannot turn a blind eye any more.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Fisheries and Maritime Affairs: Quotas, Common Fisheries Policy and Sustainability Impact Assessment: Discussion (14 Oct 2025)
- Manus Boyle: Deputy Mac Lochlainn is right; there is nobody giving up the flag. However, there has to be something for the catching sector and service industries. If we take the ports in Killybegs and Castletownbere, there are a lot of service industries including engineering, net menders and factories. All of that has built up this last 50 years around these ports. There has to be something in it for...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Fisheries and Maritime Affairs: Quotas, Common Fisheries Policy and Sustainability Impact Assessment: Discussion (14 Oct 2025)
- Manus Boyle: In fairness, Chair, it is one of the ideas I floated here, that maybe this committee should go out to Europe and talk to MEPs. I know we cannot make a decision here today but it is something that needs to be put on the agenda. This is far too important. We cannot stand back. What has happened for the last 20 years is that the Irish stood back and everybody else took our fish. Now, our...
