Endometriosis Care in Ireland: Motion [Private Members] (15 Jul 2025)

Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin: Cuirim fáilte roimh mhná na hÉireann atá thuas san Áiléar Poiblí anocht. Tá céad míle fáilte rompu. Like most men, I knew very little about the silent problem of endometriosis until we held a meeting in Arklow recently for the Wicklow-Wexford constituency. It certainly was an eye-opener for me. I am sure it would be for most men, and...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science: Student Accommodation: Discussion (15 Jul 2025)

Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin: I thank Ms Nugent, Mr. McCaffrey and Mr. Lemass for those reports and the extra detail. I welcome the few points made in relation to the extra investment, though it is somewhat modest concerning the number of beds. The rent-a-room relief scheme is a very good, sensible model that ticks many boxes for many things apart from more affordable accommodation. My preference would be for a major...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science: Student Accommodation: Discussion (15 Jul 2025)

Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin: I am sorry for interrupting, but can Mr. Lemass see the big problem there could be if a private university got a vastly higher level of fees? If students from India or wherever are being charged a great amount of fees, there will obviously be a far greater incentive for that institution to go further down that route. It is more profitable.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science: Student Accommodation: Discussion (15 Jul 2025)

Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin: In terms of accommodation, if there was a far greater increase in demand versus supply, does Mr. Lemass recognise that the natural law of economics would mean the cost would go up?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science: Student Accommodation: Discussion (15 Jul 2025)

Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin: Modern building technologies can be used for very rapid builds. Are they being considered? There are quick ways of building units and there are slow ways of doing it. If you have to do it in an emergency, building technology is very good at the moment. On IPAS accommodation, there have been a lot of reports over the past few years. It is a divisive issue with rampant speculation. In...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science: Student Accommodation: Discussion (15 Jul 2025)

Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin: How many student accommodation units remain in the system?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science: Student Accommodation: Discussion (15 Jul 2025)

Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin: How many student accommodation units will remain in IPAS after those have been returned? I think it was originally 5,000 that were moved.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science: Student Accommodation: Discussion (15 Jul 2025)

Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin: I thank Mr. Lemass.

Select Committee on Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science: Estimates for Public Services 2025
Vote 45 - Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science (Revised)
(9 Jul 2025)

Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin: I know it is very early stages for the Wexford campus of the South East Technological University, which the Minister was dealing with recently anyway. Does he have any details of plans for proper, State-funded accommodation on that campus? It is early stages but these things have to be planned long in advance. That will be key.

Select Committee on Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science: Estimates for Public Services 2025
Vote 45 - Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science (Revised)
(9 Jul 2025)

Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin: I thank the Minister for the presentation. I welcome the 7.5% increase because student accommodation is really key in all this. Preferably it would be State accommodation on campus. That is something I would like to see in our area with the South East Technological University. State accommodation should be factored in to that because too often it has been left to international investors...

Student Fees: Motion [Private Members] (8 Jul 2025)

Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin: The Government plan to hike fees by 50% or €1,000 in the middle of a cost-of-living crisis represents a betrayal of the students up in the Gallery, whom I welcome, and their parents. I am sure they will not forget this. Tá géarchéim costais mhaireachtála uafásach againn in Éirinn faoi láthair. Tá daoine ag fulaingt agus faoi bhrú...

European Union Regulations on International and Temporary Protection: Motions (3 Jul 2025)

Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin: Sinn Féin has been clear that where a person is not entitled to be in Ireland, he or she should be returned safely to his or her country of origin and that deportation orders should be both enforced and tracked. We need to have powers to immediately return those who are found not to be entitled to be here. I am looking up behind the Minister at a statue of Cathal Brugha,...

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (3 Jul 2025)

Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin: The Arklow to Shillelagh greenway project, which is of great important for tourism on the east coast and in south Wicklow and north Wexford, is still stuck at phase 2. There has been no update since 2023 so two years have passed without visible progress. It will be an absolutely tremendous asset for the area, providing scenic walking and cycling routes through the beautiful valleys of south...

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (3 Jul 2025)

Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin: Even next week would be grand.

All-Island Strategic Rail Review: Statements (Resumed) (2 Jul 2025)

Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin: We must do far better for the people of Wicklow and Wexford. For years, I have raised the issue of the inadequate rail network in these counties, including most recently last week at a meeting in Buswells Hotel with representatives of Iarnród Éireann. My hopes were briefly lifted with the all-Ireland strategic rail review when the Wicklow and Wexford rail line was mentioned....

Committee on Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science: Review of Action Plan for Apprenticeship 2021-2025: Discussion (25 Jun 2025)

Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin: I thank the witnesses. Everything they said has been very informative. I missed the beginning of the meeting. I am very interested in this area. I was on WWETB for ten years and I was teaching for 35 years before I started this thing. I see the numbers of apprenticeships have increased. One figure indicated we have 77 and another suggested it was 88. Ten years ago, I attended an event...

Committee on Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science: Review of Action Plan for Apprenticeship 2021-2025: Discussion (25 Jun 2025)

Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin: That is very welcome to hear. I thank Dr. Collins. My second question was on basic skills training in the Wexford and Wicklow area.

Committee on Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science: Review of Action Plan for Apprenticeship 2021-2025: Discussion (25 Jun 2025)

Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin: In the agriculture sector, I see there is only arboriculture listed. It is something we need at the moment. There is a huge crisis and a mass exodus of young farmers. Actually, it is not really an exodus because they are not going into it. Fewer than 5% of young people now are going into farming.

Committee on Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science: Review of Action Plan for Apprenticeship 2021-2025: Discussion (25 Jun 2025)

Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin: I did not see those apprenticeships on the list of agriculture apprenticeships. We definitely need those apprenticeships because we all depend on Irish farming for our food three times a day. It has been recognised by farmers' associations recently that people leaving the sector represents a huge crisis. Is there anything more we can do to keep young people in the sector and encourage...
