Seanad: Order of Business (4 Mar 2010)

Ivor Callely: A number of us are deeply concerned at the manner in which information has emerged over recent weeks about children in care.

Seanad: Order of Business (4 Mar 2010)

Ivor Callely: A service provider indicated in a radio interview earlier that serious gaps remain for children in care. Could the Leader arrange appropriate briefings and reports? We could then consider whether it is necessary to have a debate in the House regarding the level of supports, the gaps, if any, and the variances in different areas of the country in services provided to children taken into...

Seanad: Job Creation: Statements (Resumed). (3 Mar 2010)

Ivor Callely: I welcome my good friend and colleague, the Minister of State, Deputy Billy Kelleher. I wish to respond to Senator Quinn. I concur with much of what he said. The clear message from him is that each and every one of us on the island of Ireland has a role to play by going out and buying local. He had a great slogan, if I remember it correctly, "Come for the service and stay for the price".

Seanad: Job Creation: Statements (Resumed). (3 Mar 2010)

Ivor Callely: Was it? We need to do something of that nature now with regard to shopping locally. We need to encourage the entrepreneur at every parish pump to do what Senator Quinn said and each one of us must walk to our local shop and support local enterprise and business. I congratulate the Senator on his contribution because it is the way forward.

Seanad: Order of Business (3 Mar 2010)

Ivor Callely: Some weeks ago I raised the issue of the report of the Pensions Board on the difficulty in which we find ourselves regarding pensions. I note with interest that there are some undercurrents of trying to force the retirement age upwards. I understand the Government is today scheduled to publish proposals for future pension arrangements. In light of all that has happened and reflecting the...

Seanad: Order of Business (3 Mar 2010)

Ivor Callely: I understand that Committee Stage is being taken today. I am talking about Report and Final Stages.

Seanad: Order of Business (3 Mar 2010)

Ivor Callely: Can the Leader indicate whether Government amendments will be tabled? Having listened to the previous speaker talk about job creation, I concur with Senator Buttimer that it is very important and a debate will take place in the House today in that regard. Separately we need to look at an issue which is very wide ranging and needs to address many related issues, including the minimum wage...

Seanad: Order of Business (2 Mar 2010)

Ivor Callely: I support my colleague's call for a debate on A Vision for Change and congratulate the Minister of State, Deputy Moloney, on the good work he is doing. Equally, while there is a great deal of talk about the closure of old draconian facilities, I make the point that there is a need for long-stay care for psychiatric patients, young and old. We should not lose sight of that. Prior to the...

Ivor Callely: In the Leader's area a judge referred to the appalling arrogance of senior bankers.

Seanad: Order of Business (2 Mar 2010)

Ivor Callely: This was in Mullingar District Court.

Ivor Callely: The judge referred to the appalling arrogance of senior bankers.

Seanad: Order of Business (2 Mar 2010)

Seanad: Order of Business (2 Mar 2010)

Ivor Callely: ——for a wide-ranging debate.

Seanad: Dog Breeding Establishments Bill 2009: Committee Stage (Resumed) (25 Feb 2010)

Ivor Callely: I appreciate the Minister's openness in his address and his indication that true consultation and representation brought us to this point. I hope we will be able to continue in that frame. I grew up with a dog in the house and have lived with a dog in my house ever since, including my beautiful west highland terrier that I enjoy personally. I have a great love for the simplistic pleasures...

Seanad: Dog Breeding Establishments Bill 2009: Committee Stage (Resumed) (25 Feb 2010)

Ivor Callely: I thank the Minister for his response in respect of the issues I raised. I am not my party's spokesperson on this topic. As already indicated, all that I am is a simple dog lover who is concerned about animal welfare. I welcome the fact that the Minister has indicated the merits of the work done to bring this legislation before the House. I appreciate what he said in that regard and I am...

Seanad: Dog Breeding Establishments Bill 2009: Committee Stage (Resumed) (25 Feb 2010)

Ivor Callely: I appreciate the Minister's open approach. I also appreciate that he is prepared to enter into dialogue and engage in consultation. If it emerges that the legislation might have an impact on the various issues I and others have brought to his attention, I ask that Government amendments be tabled for Report Stage. I will leave it to the Minister's good offices, in the knowledge that he...

Seanad: Order of Business (24 Feb 2010)

Ivor Callely: I support the calls for a debate on banking. On previous occasions I sought a structured debate on the financial and economic situation. As we proceed through 2010, there will be more difficulties for the banking industry. Halifax has already indicated it is pulling out of Ireland and others may follow. I, therefore, urge the Leader to facilitate a structured and meaningful debate on...

Seanad: Order of Business (17 Feb 2010)

Ivor Callely: I support the call for a debate on job creation when this can be accommodated into our schedule in a meaningful way and the appropriate people are able to come to the House. I reiterate my call that we should revisit Government policy and strategy with regard to the aviation industry. Yesterday I said we should look to incentivising the industry, perhaps focusing on the north Dublin area...

Ivor Callely: -----where 3,000 men-----
