Seanad: Animal Diseases: Statements. (20 Oct 2005)

Peter Callanan: Senator Coonan is wasting my time.

Seanad: Animal Diseases: Statements. (20 Oct 2005)

Peter Callanan: I do not have a script.

Seanad: Animal Diseases: Statements. (20 Oct 2005)

Peter Callanan: Last week, when the Taoiseach came into the Chamber, we all welcomed him. During his contribution on European matters, he dealt extensively with globalisation, CAP, the protection of farming interests, both here and in Europe, which we should welcome. He stated: Over the past weeks I have set out a clear and cogent argument in defence of the CAP. Simplistic and negative statements about the...

Seanad: Animal Diseases: Statements. (20 Oct 2005)

Peter Callanan: No, he did not. Mr. Mandelson is spinning. If the Senator wishes to spin this issue, he can go ahead.

Seanad: Animal Diseases: Statements. (20 Oct 2005)

Peter Callanan: I outlined what can be done to streamline and develop the beef industry. We ought to do that, otherwise we will not have a marketplace or a market share. We can talk as much as we like but we have approximately ten years to streamline the industry. I appeal for that to be done. An all-Ireland approach to control of diseases on the island is needed. The Administrations, North and South, were...

Seanad: Order of Business. (15 Nov 2005)

Peter Callanan: I support Senator Glynn's call for a debate on male cancers and men's health generally. Senator Glynn has raised these matters in the House on many occasions. I note that lady Senators refer to the effect of certain cancers on females, but we seem to be shy and slow in taking up the question of male cancers. I am sorry to say that I have been there myself, so perhaps it is something we need...

Seanad: Order of Business. (16 Nov 2005)

Peter Callanan: I support the call made by Senator Dardis last week for a debate on the world trade talks, which should take place by next week at the latest. On that subject, I compliment the Minister for Agriculture and Food on her announcement of grant aid for anaerobic digesters. It is something I have been referring to for some time. It is the way forward, particularly in regard to the nitrates...

Seanad: Order of Business. (24 Nov 2005)

Peter Callanan: I am not presuming to answer for the Leader but I am confident that the payments to farmers will be made in unproblematic cases. The nitrates directive is a matter for the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government.

Seanad: Order of Business. (24 Nov 2005)

Peter Callanan: I am confident on both.

Seanad: Order of Business. (30 Nov 2005)

Peter Callanan: The Acting Leader of the Opposition called for a debate immediately after the Order of Business. I think it important to have the debate and that the Minister for Agriculture and Food attends. Confusion exists about the sugar deal done last week. I concur with previous speakers on Greencore receiving compensation but it is important the Minister attends our debate. Senators O'Toole and Ryan...

Seanad: Order of Business. (30 Nov 2005)

Peter Callanan: The Opposition would do well to recall these issues, which I will repeat. In the case of Irish Shipping, workers were stranded abroad and had to find their way home. I remind the Opposition of Ford and Dunlop.

Seanad: Order of Business. (30 Nov 2005)

Peter Callanan: I do not know what is wrong with the Opposition but I commend the Minister on the payments that are being prepared, as referred to by Senator McHugh.

Seanad: Order of Business. (30 Nov 2005)

Peter Callanan: I ask the Leader to convey the congratulations of this House to the Minister for Agriculture and Food, Deputy Coughlan, on the prompt payment of the moneys.

Seanad: Order of Business. (6 Dec 2005)

Peter Callanan: We will.

Seanad: Order of Business. (6 Dec 2005)

Peter Callanan: It is not over.

Seanad: WTO Negotiations: Statements. (7 Dec 2005)

Peter Callanan: That is rubbish.

Seanad: WTO Negotiations: Statements. (7 Dec 2005)

Peter Callanan: I welcome the Minister for Agriculture and Food, Deputy Coughlan, to the House. I will attempt to keep the same spirit that prevailed on the Order of Business. It was fascinating to say the least that we had an excellent morning of co-operation across the House. There was no need for the glass barriers. Senator Coonan may be stirring the pot in straying away from what he should have...

Seanad: WTO Negotiations: Statements. (7 Dec 2005)

Peter Callanan: Will Senator Coonan keep to the spirit of co-operation that existed on the Order of Business?

Seanad: WTO Negotiations: Statements. (7 Dec 2005)

Peter Callanan: Some 12 months ago, I warned the Minister she was facing into her most difficult task to date, the negotiations on the future of sugar beet growing and the sugar industry. Greencore, through closing the Carlow sugar plant, divided sugar beet growers, leaving the Minister in the invidious position of trying to please everybody but nobody.

Seanad: WTO Negotiations: Statements. (7 Dec 2005)

Peter Callanan: The Minister did well in those talks and I congratulate her on the results she achieved. However, what of the €144.5 million compensation payment for Greencore? It does not deserve it. It is morally wrong that such a payment should be in the package.
