Seanad: Gnó an tSeanaid - Business of Seanad (24 May 2023)

Róisín Garvey: Go raibh maith agat. I stand humbled in front of our guest. I very much appreciate the work of Rev. Good. A deep moral, ethical and spiritual sense can have a major impact on people and I appreciate Rev. Good for that reason. Sometimes, we forget it is not all about the head. There is also the heart, and he definitely played his part in bringing that deeper social and spiritual aspect to...

Seanad: Road Traffic and Roads Bill 2021: Report and Final Stages (24 May 2023)

Róisín Garvey: Can I speak to the Bill in general? Is that okay?

Seanad: Road Traffic and Roads Bill 2021: Report and Final Stages (24 May 2023)

Róisín Garvey: Okay. I will come back in in a minute.

Seanad: Road Traffic and Roads Bill 2021: Report and Final Stages (24 May 2023)

Róisín Garvey: This is a really important part of the Bill. The TII has often made decisions on the speed limits for certain types of road, but it is important, as we heard the Minister say, that if local authorities have an issue with the limit that is set that it can be looked at and changed. I have put up many photos of where there is an 80 km/h speed limit right on a bend or one where there is an 80...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (18 May 2023)

Róisín Garvey: I want to say a few words about the ongoing issue in Clare, namely, the fish kill in a river. There is a public meeting about it tomorrow night in the Falls Hotel in Ennistymon. There is an ongoing investigation, thanks to Inland Fisheries Ireland and its dedicated staff. The people want results and answers. We have to set a precedent because it was a crime against nature. Thousands of...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (11 May 2023)

Róisín Garvey: Is oth liom a rá gur seachtain an-bhrónach í an tseachtain seo. River Inagh has been killed stone dead. Thanks to a big dump into our river, we have thousands of dead fish, insects, eels and so forth. I spoke on the news about it but that does not really make a difference because that will not clean up the river. What has happened in River Inagh could happen anywhere. I...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Local Link Transport Services: Discussion (10 May 2023)

Róisín Garvey: I put it on my agenda to attend this meeting because I feel so strongly about the important role rural transport plays in rural development. I do not know whether the witnesses have appeared before this committee previously. Perhaps Mr. Boland or someone else from Irish Rural Link has. I live 5 km from the closest village and 17 km from the closest town. I am a member of the Green Party...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Local Link Transport Services: Discussion (10 May 2023)

Róisín Garvey: I would love a guidance note on bus stops. If the matter is left to local authorities then services will be haphazard because some of them do not believe in providing rural bus stops and they have too much to do anyway. That is my personal experience from dealing with lots of local authorities in my previous job. The NTA must outline a minimum target for local authorities because if it is...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Local Link Transport Services: Discussion (10 May 2023)

Róisín Garvey: I quoted the key message of the Connecting Ireland plan. I read up on it this morning again and the plan states: "Over 100 rural villages will benefit from frequent public transport services." The plan will also see a 25% overall increase in rural bus services and "There will be over 60 new connections to regional cities from surrounding areas."

Róisín Garvey: A very low base.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Local Link Transport Services: Discussion (10 May 2023)

Róisín Garvey: To go back to the subject of bus poles, I hear what Mr. Gaston is saying, namely that capacity seems to be a huge issue. Has the Minister been asked for additional funding to get people on the ground? The local authorities are telling me they have new active travel staff but that none of their jobs requires them to have anything to do with bus stops. They are busy working on walking and...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Local Link Transport Services: Discussion (10 May 2023)

Róisín Garvey: Even with the existing bus stops, the timetable is four years out of date.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Local Link Transport Services: Discussion (10 May 2023)

Róisín Garvey: I just mean in villages and towns for starters, where we do not have any lock-ups.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Local Link Transport Services: Discussion (10 May 2023)

Róisín Garvey: The local authorities told me that if Bus Éireann instructs them to do so, they will erect bus poles but they do not have manpower and that is part of the delay. Bus Éireann is not coming on board with where the poles should go either because the NTA is still unsure about the design. I am not sure where the whole thing is at.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Local Link Transport Services: Discussion (10 May 2023)

Róisín Garvey: Brilliant.
