Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community: Traveller Accommodation: Discussion (Resumed) (1 Feb 2024)

Eileen Flynn: I will read out some of the letter we got from the Minister of State, Deputy O'Donnell. It is important we have it on the record. I am pleased to inform you that following an examination of the Stage 2 application for the redevelopment my Department recently granted Stage 2 approval to Cork City Council for a budget [...] of €17.9m. I thank the Minister of State for working with...

Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community: Traveller Accommodation: Discussion (Resumed) (1 Feb 2024)

Eileen Flynn: Okay. This is the committee on key Traveller issues and I understand what Mr. Gilligan is saying about communities and the consultations around refugees and the Traveller community but I think they are two separate issues that need to be treated equally, with dignity and respect and we should never state that one community is more important than another. While I get that Mr. Gilligan is...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (31 Jan 2024)

Eileen Flynn: Yesterday, I brought up the issue of hate crime legislation and asked where that legislation is now.I and other members of ethic minority groups, as well as LGBTQI+ communities and disabled people, believe this legislation is extremely important. Sadly, it is evidently required in society. I again call for a date to be set for Committee Stage of the Criminal Justice (Incitement to Violence...

Seanad: Family Carers: Motion [Private Members] (31 Jan 2024)

Eileen Flynn: I am glad to have the opportunity to speak on this very important matter this evening. Care is at the core of our communities and our connections. We need to start looking at care differently and speaking about it differently. We should not use cost to measure the impact of care because our society is built on care. Care often lays the foundation for persons to live independently. This...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (30 Jan 2024)

Eileen Flynn: This afternoon I want to call again for strong hate crime legislation. Unfortunately, due to the volume of emails received over the summer and in the last few months about its hate crime legislation, the Government has paused it, ignoring the fact that many NGOs and people from minority groups, including the Irish Traveller Movement and Migrant Rights Centre Ireland, have been fighting for...

Eileen Flynn: I thank the Minister for being here. When I first came here, I did not really understand about the technological universities. I had to learn as I went along, like many others around the table. The level of change in the past few years has been mind-blowing. Students have the opportunity now to be educated at home if they can and want to opt into that. It is absolutely brilliant. I...

With regard to the point on electricity credits I am working with the Minister of State, Deputy Smyth, to make sure every Traveller in the country who is paying for electricity will get access to the credit. As Ms Collins said, it is nowhere in sight and people are still missing out. I will speak with National Traveller MABS after the meeting and we will try to have...

Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community: Traveller Accommodation: Discussion (Resumed) (14 Dec 2023)

Eileen Flynn: I thank the Deputy. Is it agreed that the committee will write a letter to the Department of Social Protection? Agreed. This is very interesting. The committee has spoken about the short-term solutions that end up being bigger down the line. Our aim is so ambitious and we should be ambitious but sometimes we are not ambitious enough. As a committee, we are looking for doable wins that...

Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community: Traveller Accommodation: Discussion (Resumed) (14 Dec 2023)

Eileen Flynn: Before the witnesses answer, I suggest that we table an amendment to the Planning and Development Act in Private Members' time. Deputy Joan Collins or any other member, including me, could do that in the Dáil or Seanad. I flag that as something we could do for the organisations. We could bring an amendment through the Seanad. I ask the witnesses to respond to Deputy Collins's questions.
