Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Update on Quarters 1 and 2: Discussion (5 Oct 2022)

Ollie Crowe: Okay. I thank the Tánaiste. He is kind of telling us that it is under review until February and we will take it from there, I hope. I move to the welcome measure that is the temporary business energy support scheme. It is needed by all businesses. The Tánaiste has spoken of the requirement for it to receive EU clearance due to state aid rules, and the legislation obviously...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Update on Quarters 1 and 2: Discussion (5 Oct 2022)

Ollie Crowe: Okay. The Tánaiste will be aware the Commission downgraded the north-west region, which includes Galway, Mayo, Roscommon, Sligo, Leitrim, Donegal and Monaghan, to a "lagging region" last week. It had previously been demoted from "developed" to "a region in transition" in 2019. One would hope the Atlantic Technological University, ATU, now in its first year, will make an impact across...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Update on Quarters 1 and 2: Discussion (5 Oct 2022)

Ollie Crowe: I thank the Tánaiste for his positive comments.

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Community Care (28 Sep 2022)

Ollie Crowe: There is a unity of purpose between my colleagues and I on this very serious issue for Clifden. As has been stated, I certainly got the impression at the meeting that it was a case of death by a thousand cuts. As Senators Kyne and O'Reilly outlined, there is a considerable issue with the increasing population in Clifden and the surrounding areas. We ask the Minister of State for her full...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Community Care (28 Sep 2022)

Ollie Crowe: The major issue here is referrals. As Senators Kyne and O'Reilly outlined, the issue is that the hospital is not getting the referrals in, which creates uncertainty. The Minister of State alluded to the cost of travelling 80 km on a two-hour journey to Merlin Park. It is not feasible or possible. I ask the Minister of State to do all within her remit to support us on this vital cause.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Cost of Living, Minimum Wage Increases and Report of Low Pay Commission: Discussion (28 Sep 2022)

Ollie Crowe: I thank our guests from the Low Pay Commission and Mandate for their time. May I ask the representatives from Mandate their view on yesterday's budget and the impact it will have on low-wage workers, in particular with regard to the expanded GP card eligibility, the social welfare initiatives and the energy credit? What is their overall assessment?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Cost of Living, Minimum Wage Increases and Report of Low Pay Commission: Discussion (28 Sep 2022)

Ollie Crowe: I thank Mr. Light. Between February 2015, when, as we are aware, the Low Pay Commission was established, and July 2021, prices increased by 4.4%. In February 2015, the minimum wage was €8.65, as we are aware, and in July 2021 the commission recommended a minimum wage of €10.50 an hour, which, naturally, the Government agreed to. That was a 21% increase over the same period...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Cost of Living, Minimum Wage Increases and Report of Low Pay Commission: Discussion (28 Sep 2022)

Ollie Crowe: May I clarify Mandate's view on the potential for a €14 minimum wage to create job losses? Is it Mandate's view that if a business cannot afford the rate, that business is not sustainable anyway? What exactly is the outlook? I am trying to understand whether Mandate looks at this solely from the perspective of the workers or whether it also looks at it through the wider economic lens.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Cost of Living, Minimum Wage Increases and Report of Low Pay Commission: Discussion (28 Sep 2022)

Ollie Crowe: I will leave it at that for the moment.

Seanad: Budget 2023 (Finance): Statements (27 Sep 2022)

Ollie Crowe: I will wait another minute.

Seanad: Budget 2023 (Finance): Statements (27 Sep 2022)

Ollie Crowe: No. problem. Ladies first.

Seanad: Budget 2023 (Finance): Statements (27 Sep 2022)

Ollie Crowe: To clarify, it was the Leas-Chathaoirleach's mistake to call me. It was certainly not mine. The Senator certainly had plenty to say. I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Fleming, to the House. He is a regular visitor. We are living in extraordinary times with considerable challenges. The Government needed to deliver a budget to match these times and I am delighted to say it has done...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (14 Sep 2022)

Ollie Crowe: I welcome the UK ambassador to Ireland, Mr. Paul Johnston, and his colleague, Mr. Jeremy Wilmshurst, to the House and share with them our condolences on the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. Her visit to Ireland in 2011 was a significant moment in the history of our countries and will long be remembered. That visit was a success in no small part thanks to the warmth and grace displayed by...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: General Scheme of Representative Actions for the Protection of the Collective Interests of Consumers Bill 2022: Discussion (14 Sep 2022)

Ollie Crowe: I thank the representatives for giving of their time and expertise this morning. I have two questions for the Consumers' Association of Ireland. Has the CAI any estimates, and Deputy O'Reilly referenced this, on what level of funding would be required? Obviously, it would depend on what case the qualified entity takes and so forth, but is it possible to give an indication? I know it is a...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: General Scheme of Representative Actions for the Protection of the Collective Interests of Consumers Bill 2022: Discussion (14 Sep 2022)

Ollie Crowe: I thank Mr. Jewell. The Law Society of Ireland referred to broader reforms that are carefully balanced. Could its representatives speak further on that and how it might be achieved as part of the legislation?

Seanad: Night-time Economy: Motion (13 Jul 2022)

Ollie Crowe: I welcome the Minister back into the House. I thank Senator Warfield for his continued work over the past number of months. The night-time economy is an important part of our economy. It supports tens of thousands of jobs throughout the country. The vast majority of it is made up of SMEs. As we are all aware, SMEs are the backbone of the Irish economy. The industry is coming out of the...

Seanad: Night-time Economy: Motion (13 Jul 2022)

Ollie Crowe: I propose the suspension.

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Job Creation (12 Jul 2022)

Ollie Crowe: I welcome the Minister of State back to the Chamber. I would like him to outline the situation regarding bars and pubs throughout the country. As background, over the past two decades before the Covid-19 pandemic, 1,500 pubs closed and hundreds more have followed during the pandemic. The vast majority of the pub industry comprises independent pubs, small businesses and family-run...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Job Creation (12 Jul 2022)

Ollie Crowe: I thank the Minister of State, Deputy English, for his detailed response. He indicated that there are only 200 fewer licences, but as he alluded to, it is unclear as to whether that figure is accurate on the ground. I ask him if his Department could furnish me with the details when they are available later in the year. In terms of the staff shortage crisis, could he advise if the...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Job Creation (12 Jul 2022)

Ollie Crowe: The Minister of State referred to the retirement of Padraig Cribben. He gave great service to the Vintners Federation of Ireland and I wish him well in his retirement. He played a significant role in helping publicans across the country. I wish Paul Clancy well in his new chief executive role.
