Vote 30 - Agriculture, Food and the Marine
Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine - 2021 Financial Statements
Fishery Harbour Centres
(4 May 2023)

Verona Murphy: Then there has to be a benefit. If we are producing NOx emissions over and above what the EPA determines to be allowable under the EU rules, at Dublin Port for instance, we pay a massive fine for exceeding them. There has to be a monetary value on sequestering carbon to somebody. I am seeking to determine who is getting that monetary value.

Energy Regulations: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (16 Nov 2022)

Verona Murphy: .... There is a massive environmental benefit to the whole island of Ireland and to people in general, particularly in built-up areas and cities such as Dublin. The Environmental Protection Agency, EPA, said the biggest offender is the Dublin Port area and that static traffic is creating NOx emissions, which are bad for lung health. With all the buzzwords like climate emergency and...

Water Policy: Statements (9 Nov 2022)

Verona Murphy: ...the reports for quarters 3 and 4 will contain to establish whether these problems are getting worse or better. If these reports are not produced on time, confidence in the system just dwindles. The recent EPA report from 14 October is very concerning. I understand that no system is perfect all the time and that problems will arise, but, unfortunately, they are happening too frequently...

Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Security: Statements (12 May 2022)

Verona Murphy: ...from highlighting the folly of expanding Dublin Port, for instance, and I have called numerous times for the Port Tunnel barrier to be removed to reduce emissions at what is the most problematic area, according to the EPA, and those issues are ignored. Instead we have the sacred cow of carbon tax being protected at all costs and increased again at a time when inflation in the cost of...

Public Accounts Committee: 2020 Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General and Appropriation Accounts
Vote 31 - Transport
Chapter 5 - Expenditure on Night Vision Imaging Technology and Training for Search and Rescue
Special Report 113 of the Comptroller and Auditor General - Procurement of Vehicles by the Irish Coast Guard
(11 Nov 2021)

Verona Murphy: ...litre of fuel and that is just in money. I do not have the measure of what it is costing in lung health and health issues that NOx emissions contribute to but I am sure the Environmental Protection Agency, EPA, does. I would like the Department to come back to the committee and let us know what it is going to do about the situation and what actions it will take because the EPA has...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Revised National Development Plan: Discussion (3 Nov 2021)

Verona Murphy: I will tell Mr. O’Neill where it is an issue. The Environmental Protection Agency, EPA, study on the barrier at the Dublin Port Tunnel says that we have the worst of NOx emissions in the country in this part of the city. It is caused primarily by the fact that we have a toll barrier. Each time a vehicle stops, it expends a litre of fuel into the atmosphere. Has there been any...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla — Topical Issue Debate: Water Supply (22 Sep 2021)

Verona Murphy: ...Deputy Burke, might want to read this week's edition of the Wexford People. He might also need to stop listening to the civil servants who are feeding him yet another "Yes, Minister" moment. The EPA has come out with what is an abject failure of managerial oversight and, yet, we have a Minister of State endorsing the CEO who presided over it. The Minister of State, Deputy Noonan, will...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla — Topical Issue Debate: Water Supply (22 Sep 2021)

Verona Murphy: ...the plant at Creagh and that risk management failed. We in Wexford are left with a crisis of confidence in our drinking water. This has been described by the Environmental Protection Agency, EPA, as an abject failure of management, oversight, operational control and responsiveness by Irish Water and local authorities. In all circumstances, the public must have confidence when they...

Climate Action and Low Carbon Development (Amendment) Bill 2021: Second Stage (Resumed) (5 May 2021)

Verona Murphy: ...does the Bill take of the thousands of carbon-sequestering hedgerows that are found on farms across Ireland but not in other EU countries? According to Teagasc and the Environmental Protection Agency, EPA, 5% to 7% of Ireland's landmass is covered by hedgerows, equating to thousands of kilometres. These are extraordinary figures, but what carbon credits do our farmers get for them? More...

Climate Action and Low Carbon Development (Amendment) Bill 2021: Second Stage (Resumed) (29 Apr 2021)

Verona Murphy: ...a toll barrier at Dublin Port tunnel would make a world of a difference with regard to emissions? The entrance has one of the highest levels of NOx emissions of anywhere in the city, according to the EPA. Perhaps that is simplistic. It would not make us world leaders because First World countries do not have toll barriers and tolls, just Ireland. We have both-----

Public Accounts Committee: 2019 Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General and Appropriation Accounts
Vote 29 - Communications, Climate Action and Environment
(22 Jan 2021)

Verona Murphy: My thanks to everyone for coming to take part. I have questions that are possibly for Mr. Ó hÓbáin and Mr. Griffin. I wish to say at the outset that in any engagement I have had with the Department I have always found the officials helpful. I hope that continues. My question is on cybersecurity. I am concerned that we do not have a budget fit to meet the demands of the...

Covid-19 (Transport): Statements (13 May 2020)

Verona Murphy: I concur with several issues raised by Deputy Howlin. I do not wish to repeat them, but I have sent correspondence to the Department and I would be happy if the Minister replies in writing. I will now talk about Government formation talks taking place between Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and the Green Party. The incoming Government will face major challenges as a result of Covid-19 and...
