Public Accounts Committee: Financial Statements 2022 - Tusla-Child and Family Agency (29 Feb 2024)

Verona Murphy: I had several meetings with the HSE and Tusla regarding a particular child. There was a child protection issue for the whole family based on the child engaging in self-harm. He was an 11-year-old. As an organisation, Tusla promised the sun, moon and stars as regards supports. There were no supports forthcoming and, when the holidays came, the mother was unable to take the child back home....

Public Accounts Committee: Financial Statements 2022 - Tusla-Child and Family Agency (29 Feb 2024)

Verona Murphy: As a result of Tusla not providing the supports it said it would ensure were provided, that child is now in residential care at a cost of €37,000 per month. That is not what annoyed everybody, however. What annoyed everybody was that the child was taken into University Hospital Waterford under section 12 and was provided with 24-hour care in the hospital under supervision from Tusla....

Public Accounts Committee: Financial Statements 2022 - Tusla-Child and Family Agency (29 Feb 2024)

Verona Murphy: What do you mean? I am sorry but, in fairness, I put something very simple to Ms Duggan. I said that I engaged with Tusla as well as with the HSE. There seems to be an awful problem whereby, when they come together, it is nobody's business. Tusla can say it is a matter for the HSE, as Ms Duggan just did, and the HSE can say it is a matter for Tusla.

Public Accounts Committee: Financial Statements 2022 - Tusla-Child and Family Agency (29 Feb 2024)

Verona Murphy: The residential placement had to be taken up because Tusla fell down on providing supports to the parent and family. It did not provide the supports it promised.

Verona Murphy: You engaged with me, as a representative, and you engaged with the family.

Public Accounts Committee: Financial Statements 2022 - Tusla-Child and Family Agency (29 Feb 2024)

Verona Murphy: It happens every day. Supports are promised and never employed.

Public Accounts Committee: Financial Statements 2022 - Tusla-Child and Family Agency (29 Feb 2024)

Verona Murphy: There is no point in engaging. The child is now in residential care.

Public Accounts Committee: Financial Statements 2022 - Tusla-Child and Family Agency (29 Feb 2024)

Verona Murphy: No, what is important is that, when care is promised, it is delivered. If it cannot be delivered, that should be said.

Public Accounts Committee: Financial Statements 2022 - Tusla-Child and Family Agency (29 Feb 2024)

Verona Murphy: The process is just too slow. As I have said, Tusla's statement from 2020 reflects what Ms Duggan is saying today. I am afraid I see no improvement.

Public Accounts Committee: Financial Statements 2022 - Tusla-Child and Family Agency (29 Feb 2024)

Verona Murphy: I will point out to Ms Duggan that the figures I have show that there are 60 fewer from 2021 to 2022.

Public Accounts Committee: Financial Statements 2022 - Tusla-Child and Family Agency (29 Feb 2024)

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (28 Feb 2024)

Verona Murphy: Last week a disturbing article appeared in our local newspaper regarding South East Technological University, SETU. The article discusses a conversation that took place at a meeting of Wexford County Council between the now retired chief executive and a local councillor, in which it was alleged that SETU and the Department of higher education are dragging their heels. I am a graduate of...

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (28 Feb 2024)

Verona Murphy: I thank the Minister. I am glad to hear him reaffirming the endorsement of a new campus for Wexford and the people of Wexford will be very glad to hear it. These allegations made at a public meeting of the county council are not helpful. The article also states that while the CPO process was invoked in January, it was completed in March. Intelligent people will know this was not the case....

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (27 Feb 2024)

Verona Murphy: There are 3,500 km of local and regional roads to maintain in County Wexford. We have funding that takes care of 200 km. Back in 1995 and 1996, in one of the first reports on roads, County Wexford was number five, which was worse than anywhere in the country. We came in at number five for the worst roads in the country. In 2022 we actually reached the bottom of the list and we have the...
