Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Education Policy (30 May 2024)

Joe Flaherty: I thank the Minister of State very much. It is safe to say there was nothing in that reply that will send me home with the wind in my sails this evening. Notwithstanding that, I note there are probably young secondary school teachers who will tell me they were in junior cycle when it was agreed to carry out a review of the JCSP as part of the implementation of the framework for junior...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Education Policy (30 May 2024)

Joe Flaherty: I want to speak to the issue of the extension of access to the junior cycle schools programme, JCSP, digital libraries to all schools, particularly DEIS schools. Notwithstanding a proud literary tradition and as a son of a county that gave us Maria Edgeworth, Goldsmith, Padraic Colum and, more recently, John Connell and Belinda McKeon, it is regrettable that our schools network is strangled...

Joe Flaherty: 80. To ask the Minister for Housing, Planning, and Local Government the number of homes currently in construction nationally; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24315/24]

Written Answers — Department of Housing, Planning, and Local Government: Housing Policy (30 May 2024)

Joe Flaherty: 81. To ask the Minister for Housing, Planning, and Local Government the number of the actions or recommendations in the recent report of the Housing Commission that have already been implemented, underway or partially underway; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24314/24]

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Scrutiny of EU Proposals (29 May 2024)

Joe Flaherty: ...probably say my next question is either the wrong question for the wrong person or the right question for the wrong person. Dog welfare falls between two Departments: the Department of agriculture and the other Department. What is the rationale for that, or how did it end up that way? Should there not be just the one Department looking after animal welfare?

Business Support Package: Statements (23 May 2024)

Joe Flaherty: I know we are talking about enterprise and retail but I want to get them out of Dublin as quickly as possible because they are spending too much money, so I want to get them back to Longford where it is to be hoped their money will be more productively spent. I think this is my first time to address the Minister in his new capacity. I commend him. I know he is a number of weeks into the...

Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: Business Supports (23 May 2024)

Joe Flaherty: 63. To ask the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the number of businesses in counties Longford, Westmeath, Laois and Offaly registered for the increased cost of business grant before 1 May 2024; how many more in each county have registered since the application process reopened recently; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23101/24]

Written Answers — Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment: Industrial Development (23 May 2024)

Joe Flaherty: 83. To ask the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment for an update on the latest developments in acquiring an IDA Ireland purpose-built facility in Longford town; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23102/24]

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposals (22 May 2024)

Joe Flaherty: I thank the Chair. I am sure the witnesses are following the European elections with interest and wonder about every candidate they see who says they will get rid of red tape and make the process much simpler. I often wonder whether they have seen the simplification proposal. I am sure the witnesses will not comment on this but I wonder whether they roll their eyes to heaven or whether...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposals (22 May 2024)

Joe Flaherty: In keeping with the simplification theme, I am sure that Ms Murphy can empathise to a large degree. She mentioned human error, and that is a big thing for farmers. Many farmers, particularly smaller farmers, do not have the skill set to do this and may be dependent on family members to help. What changes should be made? What would Ms Murphy like to see to facilitate and assist farmers in...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposals (22 May 2024)

Joe Flaherty: The concept of exempting farms of less than 10 ha is good. How did the Commission happen across the 10 ha? Farmers in Ireland are largely compliant, are used to following and are environmentally focused. Was there not an opportunity to make the case that the exemption should be extended beyond 10 ha in Ireland? That size would still be considered significantly below that of the average...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposals (22 May 2024)

Joe Flaherty: I thank the witnesses for coming in and commend them for their work on this. It is very important and it would be great to see it brought to a conclusion. It is unfortunate that we are in an election cycle which will probably delay it somewhat. My first question is probably for Dr. O'Reilly. With regard to category 1 and category 2, am I correct in saying that the category 1 could happen...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposals (22 May 2024)

Joe Flaherty: Dr. O'Reilly will then probably ask me why I am worrying about this and can we not just sort this. Why then are category 1 NGTs not allowed in organics if they are essentially naturally occurring, albeit with a faster track? What is the rationale for excluding NGTs, given that organic producers would say they are at a natural disadvantage anyway in the wider scheme? They are doing their...

Joe Flaherty: 77. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills provide an update and her views on an outstanding payment due to a school (details supplied). [23044/24]

Written Answers — Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth: International Protection (22 May 2024)

Joe Flaherty: 140. To ask the Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth the status of the planned IP accommodation provision in Longford town (details supplied). [23050/24]

Written Answers — Department of Education and Skills: Employment Rights (22 May 2024)

Joe Flaherty: 207. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills if adult literacy tutors that opt not to convert to adult educator under the terms of the new contract being offered by the Department will maintain their current entitlement to sign on for unemployment benefit during periods when they are not timetabled to deliver courses in the adult literacy service run by education and training boards; and...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposals (22 May 2024)

Joe Flaherty: It still seems an arbitrary figure. Following that through, it would mean the Commission would have to look at every farm individually to come up with that figure and I do not think it could have done that. The 10 ha still seems an arbitrary figure. That would mean the Commission had to look at each farm to assess the environmental impact. I cannot see how it could or would have done that.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Small and Medium Enterprises (21 May 2024)

Joe Flaherty: 67. To ask the Minister for Finance if he will report on the SME credit demand survey 2023, which he published in April; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22684/24]

Written Answers — Department of Finance: Inflation Rate (21 May 2024)

Joe Flaherty: 102. To ask the Minister for Finance if he expects that with inflation now moderating, the pressures many consumers have faced will likely ease across the year; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22683/24]

Written Answers — Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade: Passport Services (21 May 2024)
