Special Committee on Covid-19 Response: Covid-19: Impact on International Travel (24 Jul 2020)

Paul McAuliffe: Is Mr. Cullen saying that in the European context Ireland has the most restrictive travel?

Special Committee on Covid-19 Response: Covid-19: Impact on International Travel (24 Jul 2020)

Paul McAuliffe: In regard to those people who have booked holidays but are not able to or are reluctant to travel, the additional submission references the EU norms, specifically around the Canary Islands. I have been contacted this week by many people who believe the Canary Islands should be on the green list. I ask Mr. Cullen to speak to that point in the submission?

Special Committee on Covid-19 Response: Covid-19: Impact on International Travel (24 Jul 2020)

Paul McAuliffe: My final question is for SIPTU. I am very aware of the lack of flights because most of them fly over the Dublin North West constituency. They also fly over many of the homes of people who work in Dublin Airport. I ask SIPTU to speak to us on the voluntary redundancy programme and if it has any fears that it may become compulsory.

Special Committee on Covid-19 Response: Covid-19: Impact on International Travel (24 Jul 2020)

Paul McAuliffe: I asked Chairman to indicate when I was approaching the five minutes.

Special Committee on Covid-19 Response: Covid-19: Impact on Public Transport (24 Jul 2020)

Paul McAuliffe: I thank the witnesses for being with us today. All the workers who contributed to the response to Covid-19 have been thanked. We should do that today. As trade union officials, they have represented the people at the front line of the pandemic early on. I will turn to public transport shortly but, by virtue of their self-employment, taxi drivers have been forgotten in the response to this...

Special Committee on Covid-19 Response: Covid-19: Impact on Public Transport (24 Jul 2020)

Paul McAuliffe: On the broader issue with the NTA, has it provided any of the representative bodies for taxis with sample return to work protocols or any industry guidelines that they could in turn distribute to their membership?

Special Committee on Covid-19 Response: Covid-19: Impact on Public Transport (24 Jul 2020)

Paul McAuliffe: The NTA has long had a dysfunctional relationship with the taxi drivers, and Covid has exposed that further. Regarding the financial impact on taxi drivers, the joint submission has called for a step-down social welfare payment to encourage drivers back to work without being financially impacted. Do the witnesses have any indication of what level or percentage of pre-Covid activity taxi...

Special Committee on Covid-19 Response: Covid-19: Impact on Public Transport (24 Jul 2020)

Paul McAuliffe: Mr. Waldron makes a valid point that, while for many PAYE workers, the €350 PUP might be enough to keep them ticking over, for someone in the taxi industry who is self-employed, that €350 should be going towards them being sustained but, in fact, they have to use it to cover some of the costs of their business. I turn to the restart grant that is available for self-employed...

Special Committee on Covid-19 Response: Covid-19: Impact on Public Transport (24 Jul 2020)

Paul McAuliffe: Mr. Waldron raised the issue of insurance, which I had hoped to address. I and many others with private insurance have received a rebate on our motor insurance policies. What has been the experience of how the insurance industry has dealt with taxi drivers?

Special Committee on Covid-19 Response: Covid-19: Impact on Public Transport (24 Jul 2020)

Paul McAuliffe: It is very clear that the NTA needs to establish a Covid response unit for taxis. It needs to be done very quickly or else we will have a mass exodus of people whose cars are being repossessed and who will be forced to exit the industry.

Written Answers — Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade: Foreign Policy (28 Jul 2020)

Written Answers — Department of Defence: Military Honours (28 Jul 2020)

Paul McAuliffe: 409. To ask the Taoiseach and Minister for Defence further to Parliamentary Question No. 61 of 13 June 2018, if a decision has been reached in relation to the matter (details supplied). [18524/20]

Paul McAuliffe: 795. To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality if there is a support service for victims of child sex abuse carried out by members of the Probation Service. [18590/20]

Special Committee on Covid-19 Response: Covid-19: Impact on Aviation (28 Jul 2020)

Paul McAuliffe: I welcome all those who have provided submissions. I worked in Dublin Airport. It is a very busy and often exciting place to work and I imagine the impact has been devastating for many of the people who work there, many of whom live in my constituency. I will live up to the stereotype mentioned by Deputy Carroll MacNeill and focus on Dublin and allow my party colleague, Councillor Cathal...

Special Committee on Covid-19 Response: Covid-19: Impact on Aviation (28 Jul 2020)

Paul McAuliffe: I would like to focus a little bit on the situation which was outlined. We have no horizon on where this virus is going. The current situation is not sustainable. Has the DAA done any projections for Cork and Dublin airports of how many months it could trade for if the current level of business were to become the new norm?

Special Committee on Covid-19 Response: Covid-19: Impact on Aviation (28 Jul 2020)

Paul McAuliffe: On that issue of confidence, international travel has become the focus of concern for many people. The unions were with us last Friday and they outlined to us that they believed we had the most restrictive travel regime in the European Union, with the quarantine. Would Mr. Gray agree with that assessment?

Special Committee on Covid-19 Response: Covid-19: Impact on Aviation (28 Jul 2020)

Paul McAuliffe: That being the case, can Mr. Gray answer the concern as to why there has been so much concern about international travel given he says that Ireland has one of the more restrictive regimes in the European Union?

Special Committee on Covid-19 Response: Covid-19: Impact on Aviation (28 Jul 2020)

Paul McAuliffe: Some of the ways we can improve confidence in that is by having a stronger presence in airports. Can the witnesses speak about their submissions and the discussions they have had with Government to strengthen checks and presences at airports? I direct the question to both authorities.
