Seanad: Community Child Care Subvention Scheme 2008-2010: Statements (Resumed) (14 Nov 2007)

Jerry Buttimer: If they want change, then this scheme should be changed because child care is no longer a luxury but rather it is a necessity for thousands of families. Deputy Doherty stated that eleven schemes out of 11,000 were consulted. This is not consultation. Last Thursday night, the women of Cork spoke at a meeting and they had a common bond of frustration at the proposal before them. They said...

Seanad: Community Child Care Subvention Scheme 2008-2010: Statements (Resumed) (14 Nov 2007)

Jerry Buttimer: Quality child care is important and it is not too late for the Minister of State to admit he is wrong, to say in the words of Senator Leyden, "The scheme will be changed", and to climb on the horse with Senator Mary White and take credit. Senator White deserves credit in this regard because she promulgated this view long before anybody else. Middle and lower income couples will be caught...

Seanad: Community Child Care Subvention Scheme 2008-2010: Statements (Resumed) (14 Nov 2007)

Jerry Buttimer: Deputy Alan Shatter described the scheme last night as "anti-family, anti-child and anti-parent". Members opposite have spoken and we all share a commonality that the scheme is wrong and should be changed. I look forward to the Minister of State's response and I congratulate Senator Leyden on his Pauline conversion. It is great that Christianity is alive and well in the House.

Seanad: Pension Provision: Motion (14 Nov 2007)

Jerry Buttimer: I second the amendment. I welcome the Minister to the House and congratulate him on his elevation. This debate is timely and opportune. In many people's eyes, the time for debate is over and it is now time for action. I commend Senators O'Malley and Cannon on tabling this motion. I welcome the publication of the Green Paper. I suppose it is a case of better late than never. Like the...

Seanad: Pension Provision: Motion (14 Nov 2007)

Jerry Buttimer: I accept that. We all aspire to the €300 figure by 2012 and that this be a staging post. That is the consensus on this side of the House. We need to alleviate poverty. There is a growing differential between people in society at present. On Monday night I knocked on doors in Cork South-Central. An elderly woman opened the door in her coat, jumper, scarf and gloves because she was...

Seanad: Pension Provision: Motion (14 Nov 2007)

Jerry Buttimer: I accept that but it should give us a blueprint.

Seanad: Pension Provision: Motion (14 Nov 2007)

Jerry Buttimer: Almost half the women in our workforce of 2 million do not have personal pensions. Only 43% of the private sector have personal pensions and this must be rectified. Will a one-for-one pension scheme, espoused by the Members opposite during the general election campaign, be introduced for those on low incomes? Will this result from the Green Paper or must we wait for it until after the tax...
