Joint Oireachtas Committee on Disability Matters: Planning for Inclusive Communities: Discussion (Resumed) (17 Jan 2024)

Ruairi Ó Murchú: I have a specific question that relates to the issue being dealt with. It is about Saint John of God community services. In September 2020, there was a funding crisis. The figure was €32 million. The services gave a year's notice for termination of service and then, in April 2021, the Secretary General started a sustainability and impact assessment that was finished in October 2023...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union: Ambassador of Belgium to Ireland (17 Jan 2024)

Ruairi Ó Murchú: It is good to see our guests again. Theirs was about as comprehensive a report as we have got and the ambassador's answers have added to it. To follow on from an issue Deputy Haughey raised, one of the major geopolitical issues facing the world at the moment is the absolute crisis in Gaza. The latest figure I have seen for the number of dead Palestinians is 24,448, 70% of whom were women...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union: Ambassador of Belgium to Ireland (17 Jan 2024)

Ruairi Ó Murchú: I am a man of my word. On the rule of law, how does the ambassador foresee the EU ethics body?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Disability Matters: Planning for Inclusive Communities: Discussion (Resumed) (17 Jan 2024)

Ruairi Ó Murchú: I appreciate that. We need those meetings to come to some sort of conclusion. There is Government involvement, but my fear is we are talking about a transfer back of responsibility. We are almost back in the same position we were in in September 2020 and we need this resolved. We need some sort of long-term fix. People will be open to anything that delivers for citizens.

Ruairi Ó Murchú: 204. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport further to Parliamentary Question No. 30 of 30 November 2023, the reason the NTA is not carrying out a study of the effect on intercity enterprise services before key decisions are made on the DART+ Coastal North Project, given that Irish Rail has already confirmed that DART+ may result in slower enterprise journey times; if he will...

Ruairi Ó Murchú: I wish the Leas-Cheann Comhairle, the Ceann Comhairle and all the Oireachtas staff, including the ushers and the many others whom I put under pressure from time to time, a happy Christmas. It has been said to me-----

An Bille um an Naoú Leasú is Tríocha ar an mBunreacht (An Teaghlach), 2023: An Dara Céim - Thirty-ninth Amendment of the Constitution (The Family) Bill 2023: Second Stage (14 Dec 2023)

Ruairi Ó Murchú: I do not always see the time constraints as applying to me. I may have occasionally stretched past adhering to the boundaries of the subject under discussion. I have heard that said, but I am not sure I would accept it. I thank everyone and hope they have a good and safe Christmas. In addition, I remember the family of Private Seán Rooney. I remember the sacrifice he made and the...

Digital Services Bill 2023: Second Stage (13 Dec 2023)

Ruairi Ó Murchú: We know the reason for the EU Digital Services Act. We know the issues there have been, in particular with big tech, with regard to disinformation, bullying and content on which there was no checking in any way, shape or form. Beyond that, from the likes of Frances Haugen and others, we got into the ins and outs of the algorithms of companies like Facebook. You had an online tool that was...

Ruairi Ó Murchú: It goes without saying that we introduce our own sanctions alongside others in relation to the disgrace that is Israel.

Increased Fossil Fuel Divestment: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (13 Dec 2023)

Ruairi Ó Murchú: I also thank Deputies Pringle, Connolly and Joan Collins. The motion is a piece of work that is necessary and needs to be put in front of us. We all know what is necessary in making sure we steer in the correct direction. At times that is legislation, at times it is regulation, and sometimes it is even sanction. We are, unfortunately, as Deputy Ó Laoghaire said, almost happy with...
