Pa Daly: Can the witnesses say which prisons are falling down?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: General Scheme of the Irish Prison Service Bill and of the Criminal Justice (Legal Aid) Bill: Discussion (3 Oct 2023)

Pa Daly: Does that happen in other prisons?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: General Scheme of the Irish Prison Service Bill and of the Criminal Justice (Legal Aid) Bill: Discussion (3 Oct 2023)

Pa Daly: I have one final question arising from what was said. Mr. Keaveney mentioned moving prisoners to open prisons. Prisoners often have to serve half of their prison term before they get sent to an open prison. Is that something that could be changed so prisoners could perhaps be moved at a fairly early stage to an open prison?

Pa Daly: Is there much disruption to the structured activities?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: General Scheme of the Irish Prison Service Bill and of the Criminal Justice (Legal Aid) Bill: Discussion (3 Oct 2023)

Pa Daly: I welcome the witnesses. I should declare that I have worked as a solicitor for over 20 years. During the course of those 20 years, I have benefited from the criminal legal aid scheme. I think it is fundamentally important that not only should defendants get a fair a speedy trial, but they are entitled to have a robust defence. Deputy Costello previously made the point about the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: General Scheme of the Irish Prison Service Bill and of the Criminal Justice (Legal Aid) Bill: Discussion (3 Oct 2023)

Pa Daly: When I had someone who was remanded in custody, I always found getting a psychiatric report difficult. It used to take weeks, or even months, to get a proper report in order that I could deal with a case. Has that situation improved since the last election?

Domestic, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Agency Bill 2023: Second Stage (28 Sep 2023)

Pa Daly: Gabhaim buíochas leis an Aire Stáit. This Bill is very welcome and we will support it moving to the next stage. The need for a stand-alone agency has been very clear for some time. The epidemic of domestic violence, which was particularly seen during the Covid pandemic, has pushed forward the need to implement the third national strategy. There must be a zero-tolerance approach,...

Historic and Archaeological Heritage and Miscellaneous Provisions Bill 2023: Report and Final Stages (27 Sep 2023)

Pa Daly: Ba mhaith liom mo thacaíocht a thabhairt do leasú Uimh. 35 agus gabhaim mo bhuíochas leis an Teachta Ó Snodaigh, a thug an leasú go dtí an áit seo. The Bill is for the protection of historic and archaeological heritage. I support amendment No. 35, which proposes to insert "that the historic, archaeological and cultural heritage of Ireland, as the product...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: General Practitioner Services (26 Sep 2023)

Pa Daly: I thank the Minister of State for her response. This is something that came to the attention of Safe Home Ireland on 15 September. I am not sure what arrangements have been in place since the end of June or the beginning of July but this is a category of people who are the most vulnerable and who are returning after many years abroad. Irish citizens cannot get a GP card. How is that fair...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: General Practitioner Services (26 Sep 2023)

Pa Daly: I thank the Ceann Comhairle for giving me the time, at short notice, to get in on this important issue. There is a fundamental problem with GP care around the State, and particularly in Kerry, although this is not necessarily related to a Kerry issue. We have had our own problems in Kerry finding doctors for towns and villages like Ballyduff, around the Ring of Kerry and a few years ago in...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Assisted Dying: Assisted Dying in Europe: Discussion (26 Sep 2023)

Pa Daly: I thank both witnesses. I had two questions initially. One was about the discrepancy between neighbourhoods. On the other one, I was going to ask Professor Boer what he would change if he had to start all over again, but he has just answered that question. I have a number of smaller questions then. Professor Boer mentioned that in areas where there are many volunteers, numbers are...

Pa Daly: 505. To ask the Minister for Health what solution will be in place for new patients seeking a GP to apply for a medical card and to sign social welfare forms, given that the HSE has indicated that it will now not assign a GP after a patient receives three or more refusals from GPs; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [40967/23]

Mortgage Interest Relief: Motion (20 Sep 2023)

Pa Daly: Over the past year, 20% of households have seen mortgage repayments increase by over €3,000. Another 20% of households have seen repayments increase by more than €5,700. Mortgage interest rates rose by over 54% in the past year, while the retail banking sector has almost doubled its profits to €5 billion. This tallies with the experience of the people I spoke to this...
