School Staffing (9 Nov 2010)

Ulick Burke: It is wrong for the Minister to say a post of responsibility is an advancement in pay and opportunity. She is rejecting the valuable work that was done by post holders over the years, which was an integral part of the operation of the schools. We talk of the importance of liaison between the school and the home but that is dead, gone, finished. How can the Minister justify this kind of change?

Ulick Burke: The Tánaiste should not load it.

Teaching Qualifications (9 Nov 2010)

Ulick Burke: The Minister is inconsistent because she is introducing legislation that will regularise the employment of untrained teachers while at the same time she says it is her Department's policy not to employ any untrained teachers. I ask her to clarify her intentions in this regard. Have whole-school evaluations been conducted in any of the schools employing untrained teachers? If so, there...

Civil Law (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2010: Second Stage (4 Nov 2010)

Ulick Burke: I welcome the opportunity to contribute to this Bill in terms of its many amendments to existing legislation. I am glad to have an opportunity to speak to a number of them in the presence of the Minister of State, Deputy Moloney, given his association with the Department of Health and Children. The provisions in regard to alcohol and the practice of the sale of alcohol are important in...

Irish Language Strategy (3 Nov 2010)

Ulick Burke: Tacaím leis an scéim chun an Ghaeilge a chur chun cinn ach sa Teach seo, cuireadh deireadh leis na ranganna a bhí ar siúl do Theachtaí, do Sheanadóirí agus do dhaoine atá ag obair anseo. Chuir Gaeleagras ar bun iad agus cuireadh deireadh leis na ranganna ag deireadh mhí Iúil. Níl na ranganna ar fáil anois. An féidir leis an Aire a rá leis an Teach cén fáth?

Irish Language Strategy (3 Nov 2010)

Ulick Burke: Tá brón mór orm nach bhfuil na ranganna Gaeilge le fáil. Nach bhfuil sé suimiúil go bhfuil ranganna Fraincíse ar fáil sa Teach nuair nach bhfuil ranganna Gaeilge ann?

Social Welfare Benefits (2 Nov 2010)

Ulick Burke: I support Deputy Shortall's request for a review of this scheme. I had the case of a young girl on jobseeker's allowance who fell four weeks short of the time criteria for qualifying for the back to education scheme. She was accepted, however, into the first year of a nursing course but was denied the back to education allowance. She appealed the decision and continued to participate in...

Macroeconomic and Fiscal Outlook: Statements (Resumed) (28 Oct 2010)

Ulick Burke: Fine Gael Deputies have repeatedly argued in this debate that a growth and jobs plan must be introduced in parallel with a fiscal plan for recovery. It is difficult to create jobs in the current environment. Many companies have gone out of business owing to the burden of rates and service charges. To ensure local authorities do not seek court orders against employers or developers, the...
