Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Anti-Social Behaviour on Public Transport: Discussion (17 Apr 2024)

Gerry Horkan: The last thing elderly, immobile and older people want is to be stuck in the middle of nowhere, relatively speaking, trying to go home with their shopping or whatever it is. Is fare evasion still a big thing? I know it is not the drivers' job to collect fares as such, but if somebody gets on and does not pay, what do they do about it? What can they do about it?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Anti-Social Behaviour on Public Transport: Discussion (17 Apr 2024)

Gerry Horkan: I know. I am not talking about the Luas but Dublin Bus. In the old days, you would not get past the door without handing over your coins. Does it happen much that people do not tap or pay?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Anti-Social Behaviour on Public Transport: Discussion (17 Apr 2024)

Gerry Horkan: I can see it from the drivers' point of view, they are trying to drive in hostile enough traffic at times and get people from A to B, they cannot be responsible-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Anti-Social Behaviour on Public Transport: Discussion (17 Apr 2024)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Anti-Social Behaviour on Public Transport: Discussion (17 Apr 2024)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Anti-Social Behaviour on Public Transport: Discussion (17 Apr 2024)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Anti-Social Behaviour on Public Transport: Discussion (17 Apr 2024)

Gerry Horkan: We have people here from LUAS and Dublin Bus and Irish Rail but SIPTU is representing Bus Éireann, GoAhead and Aircoach as well, they are bringing the experience from everybody to the table. I would like to thank SIPTU and all of the witnesses who turned up today for their participation in today's meeting. I would like to thank them and all of the people who work in public transport...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (11 Apr 2024)

Gerry Horkan: I welcome everybody back. We had quite a break for various reasons such as St. Patrick's Day and Easter. I acknowledge the presence of Senator O'Hara. He is very welcome. I came back in a by-election, as did my colleague Senator Maria Byrne, that was not as easy as Senator O'Hara's one. I even had a member of Senator O'Hara's party on the ballot paper but despite that, many of his party...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (11 Apr 2024)

Gerry Horkan: I do not know. The Fine Gael members of the committee seem to do better than anybody else so far. I acknowledge the longest-serving diplomat in Ireland leaving today, namely, the soon-to-be former Georgian ambassador, H.E. George Zurabashvili, who is known by many Members here. I pay tribute to him for his work on behalf of the people of Georgia and Ireland-Georgia relations. I...

Seanad: EU Regulations (Police Co-operation on Migrant Smuggling and Trafficking in Human Beings): Motion (11 Apr 2024)

Gerry Horkan: I welcome the Minister back to the House and congratulate her on her reappointment to her role. Her voice is causing a bit of difficulty today. I am not going to repeat everything in my briefing notes, much of which was outlined in the Minister's speech and in Senator Ward's contribution. Indeed even Senator Keogan is on the same side on this one so we seem to have relative unanimity...

Amendment No. 3 is in the names of Senators Boylan, Gavan and Warfield but they are not here to move it.
