Seanad: Companies (Accounting) Bill 2016: Committee Stage (12 Apr 2017)

Aidan Davitt: I fundamentally disagree with the Minister. On her admission, under her own powers she is able to grant an exemption. The place to clarify and deal with an issue such as this is when we are giving detailed consideration to a Bill, as in this instance. I disagree with talking about this in regard to state aid rules and hiding behind tax compliance. This is about tax compliance, it is...

Seanad: Companies (Accounting) Bill 2016: Committee Stage (12 Apr 2017)

Aidan Davitt: It will be interesting to see whether that ends up inThe Irish Times.

Seanad: Companies (Accounting) Bill 2016: Committee Stage (12 Apr 2017)

Aidan Davitt: Senator Nash airs a couple of good concerns. However, I strongly feel that the Company Law Review Group is the way forward. Senator Nash noted it himself. I urge the Minister to answer the question the Senator posed. When does she expect to hear from the group? It will be interesting to hear its findings. When we have those findings, I have no doubt that there will be ways forward to...

Seanad: Order of Business (13 Apr 2017)

Aidan Davitt: Will the Leader ask the Minister, Deputy Coveney, to return to this House? This is an ideal forum. The Minister for Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government, Deputy Simon Coveney, was in the House and spent a great deal of time discussing the housing Bill. It would be ideal if the Minister, Deputy Coveney, would return to this House and give Members an update on the progress that...

Seanad: Companies (Accounting) Bill 2016: Report and Final Stages (9 May 2017)

Aidan Davitt: I move amendment No. 2:In page 47, lines 1 and 2, to delete “, in so far as it relates to subsection (2)(a)(iii) of section 1274 of the Principal Act,”.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Banded Hours Contract Bill 2016: Discussion (Resumed) (9 May 2017)

Aidan Davitt: I am involved with the Companies (Accounting) Bill 2016 as well, and I have an amendment on so I offer my apologies too.

Seanad: Order of Business (10 May 2017)

Aidan Davitt: Today I will raise a matter that I hope the Leader will bring to the attention of the Minister for Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government, Deputy Coveney. There has been much discussion about our housing issue, as Senators are aware, and the results and formulae we are trying to achieve in solving the housing crisis. There is a history of a certain approach working. There are...

Seanad: Order of Business (17 May 2017)

Aidan Davitt: Just off the N52 in Rathconnell, a heavily populated area near Mullingar, there have been numerous leaks in the mains water infrastructure on a one-mile stretch of road. There have been seven breaks in the asbestos line in one year and I am working closely on it with Councillor Bill Collentine, who is well equipped in this field. I have received calls from several locals asking me a...

Seanad: Order of Business (17 May 2017)

Aidan Davitt: Will the Leader bring it to the Minister's attention?

Seanad: Order of Business (17 May 2017)

Aidan Davitt: I appreciate it.

Seanad: Medical Practitioners (Amendment) Bill 2014: [Seanad Bill amended by the Dáil] Report and Final Stages (17 May 2017)

Aidan Davitt: Fianna Fáil welcomes the Bill. The amendments to it are very practical. Our spokesman for this area, Senator Swanick is a doctor. He briefed me and made it clear that this is good legislation that is badly overdue. We are very happy to support it and delighted to see it passed through the House.

Seanad: Childhood Obesity: Statements (17 May 2017)

Aidan Davitt: We are very supportive of the action plan. The Minister of State has been before the House previously to discuss her plan, and what is contained in it makes quite a lot of sense. Some of the figures she has read out are amazing. One in four Irish children is overweight or obese. Two out of three adults are overweight or obese. The cost to the State of overweight and obesity is...

Seanad: Autism Spectrum Disorder Bill 2017: Second Stage (17 May 2017)

Aidan Davitt: I agree with Senator Wilson and I commend Senator Reilly on the great work that he has done in respect of this Bill. Senator Reilly has talked to me about the Bill. He has been a passionate campaigner for autism services and he has canvassed far and wide for people to support his Bill. I am delighted to be here this evening with my colleague to support Senator Reilly and move the...

Seanad: Areas of Natural Constraint: Statements (24 May 2017)

Aidan Davitt: I am delighted the Minister is here to meet us today. The Leader of the House was asked that the Minister come to discuss this issue and he came here. It shows what working with people and having understanding can achieve. That is most important. There is always more to be achieved inside the tent than outside it, which is my way of seeing things.

Seanad: Areas of Natural Constraint: Statements (24 May 2017)

Aidan Davitt: Talking about people to our left or right or about those we want and do not want in government or will not go into power with is not of interest to us. We are interested in supporting the best thing for the people of Ireland as we have always been and we will certainly not take any lectures from anyone about that. The inclusion of SPAs is most vital. To include only mountain grazing in the...

Seanad: Areas of Natural Constraint: Statements (24 May 2017)

Aidan Davitt: I was not here for that one. I am sorry but I did not hear a great deal about it here. To speak only about the counties that are in favour and suit best a particular electorate is biased to say the least.

Seanad: Areas of Natural Constraint: Statements (24 May 2017)

Aidan Davitt: That is biased to say the least. There is €25 million of special money. I cannot see why people would exclude north-west Meath which has always been graded as severely disadvantaged. One is verging on marginal lands. Farmers are trying to keep lands going in areas like that and to keep them fertile and in use. No more than in many of the areas, it is mainly sheep on those lands....

Seanad: Business of Seanad (31 May 2017)

Aidan Davitt: In fairness, we resumed at 7.45 p.m., which was the agreement. It is 7.46 p.m. now. I agree with Senator McDowell. The problem we have is that the Minister might not be ready until 8.30 p.m. or 8.45 p.m., and where are we going at that stage?

Seanad: Business of Seanad (31 May 2017)

Aidan Davitt: I agree with Senator McDowell.

Seanad: Business of Seanad (31 May 2017)

Aidan Davitt: The Leader can give a guarantee of that.
