Lynn Ruane: I am saying they might be able to inform the committee of the practices in other countries and what would cause the least amount of harm. That is very different from telling them to go and create something. It is more of an acknowledgement of their expertise in the area so that we can be more informed as a committee going forward.

The first question is to the Garda Commissioner. I am looking for a simple answer. Does he oppose judicial overview of FRT?

Lynn Ruane: I am asking with specific reference to facial recognition technology, which will not only be on seized devices. This is in terms of having to get judicial approval for access.

Lynn Ruane: It is a completely new technology so surely, with everything else, the Commissioner would prefer to have judicial approval of FRT so it stands in regard to the Bill being legal in the first place.
