Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Education and Upskilling in the Agriculture Sector (8 Nov 2023)

Tim Lombard: I am under time pressure, but I have one more question. I wish to discuss the apprenticeship programme that is being rolled out to level 6 and level 7 applicants. It crosses a range of schemes from sportsturf to farm management and from farm technicians to horticulture. This is an important programme that involves more Departments than just the Department of Agriculture, Food and the...

Tim Lombard: Good.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Education and Upskilling in the Agriculture Sector (8 Nov 2023)

Tim Lombard: If we were to lose the derogation, it is basically being stated that instead of opting for a cow that will produce 7,000 l or 8,000 l-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Education and Upskilling in the Agriculture Sector (8 Nov 2023)

Tim Lombard: Let me ask one question. In a nutshell, it is being stated that instead of having a cow capable of producing 6,500 l or 7,000 l of milk, people should opt for those capable of producing 10,000 l to 12,000 l. The latter will probably be the type of cows people will opt for if we lose our derogation. Would that be fair?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Concerns for Sourcing Winter Animal Feed in Shannon Callows Area: Discussion (8 Nov 2023)

Tim Lombard: I am a long way from the witnesses' part of the world. I am a Corkman. I acknowledge the Deputies and Senators from all parties and none who have come to bat for the witnesses. Some 230 farmers are involved in payments under this scheme. I take it that, for a majority of them, we are talking about silage ground from their land portfolio, or is it grazing ground and silage ground?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Concerns for Sourcing Winter Animal Feed in Shannon Callows Area: Discussion (8 Nov 2023)

Tim Lombard: Absolutely. That is the point I was trying to make. Regarding the management of the river, I go back to the night my daughter was born in November 2009. Cork flooded because of the management of the river by the ESB at that stage. A complete town and village was washed away that night. There is an issue with the ESB having a monopoly on the management of the flow of water and how it...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Concerns for Sourcing Winter Animal Feed in Shannon Callows Area: Discussion (8 Nov 2023)

Tim Lombard: On the draining of rivers and waterways and how we operate, in Cork in recent weeks we have had horrendous flooding in Midleton, but Bandon and other towns like Clonakilty and Skibbereen were not flooded because of the drainage works which had been carried out there. In Bandon, they lowered the River Bandon by 1.8 m for a 3 km stretch. Even though we had something like 27 inches of rainfall...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Concerns for Sourcing Winter Animal Feed in Shannon Callows Area: Discussion (8 Nov 2023)

Tim Lombard: I thank the gentlemen for their contributions, which were really informative. There is work here for us to consider at another stage. I remind members of the committee that we have a private meeting tomorrow, Thursday, 9 November, at 1.30 p.m. The next public meeting takes place on Wednesday, 15 November, at 5.30 p.m. On the agenda is an examination of the challenges facing Horse Sport...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Schools Building Projects (26 Oct 2023)

Tim Lombard: I raise the issue of Summercove National School. The Minister of State is very much aware that Summercove is a school in Kinsale that needs a little extra attention to make sure it reaches its full potential regarding a new building. This is an issue on which Councillor Marie O'Sullivan and I have been working for a long time to make sure we could deliver this new building. There has been...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Schools Building Projects (26 Oct 2023)

Tim Lombard: I thank the Minister of State for his response. I acknowledge that there has been progress since I last put down the Commencement matter, which is helpful. It is a positive statement for the principal, the chair of the board of management and the 217 kids going to the school. We now need timelines. Perhaps the Minister of State could go back to the Department and give an indication of the...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (26 Oct 2023)

Tim Lombard: The weekend is approaching. We will have the bizarre scenario, which happens every year, when we will change the time. It is an issue that frustrates me on a continuous basis. We are going back to a law about changing the time that was passed in 1918. The world has moved on but we have not with regard to summer time. It beggars belief when we look at mental health issues and people...
