Paul Daly: Mr. Callanan said it himself, that kills forestry and organics and everything else.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Sustainable Use of Plant Protection Products Regulation: Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (5 Jul 2023)

Paul Daly: I have a brief related question and I do not know if Mr. Callanan can answer it. In any or all of the deliberations on this has the idea of genome editing or clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats, CRISPR, been included in the debate? I am not talking about genetic modification. CRISPR is where the genomes of similar plants are crossed to come up with a variety that...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Sustainable Use of Plant Protection Products Regulation: Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (5 Jul 2023)

Paul Daly: There is, however, serious difference between editing and modification. A lot of people do not understand that. I would like to have seen it being brought in as a potential solution here or as an alternative.

Paul Daly: I thank Mr. Callanan.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Update on Ireland's Forestry Strategy: Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (5 Jul 2023)

Paul Daly: I agree with the proposal. I will flag that I want explained the next day how we ended up here. All I heard was, as the Chairman said, you would think it was coming back by return post. This thing was just going over to Europe for reasons related to state aid rules. Now it appears it is going over for approval of what type of soil and where. It is a complete strategy the people over...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Ireland's Water Quality: Discussion (5 Jul 2023)

Paul Daly: Does anyone ever do a correlation or a comparison between the results that the Teagasc group is coming up with in those specific areas and what is in the EPA data and the maps for those same specific areas? Are the results coming in the same?

Paul Daly: Now.

Seanad: Agricultural and Food Supply Chain Bill 2022: Committee and Remaining Stages (4 Jul 2023)

Paul Daly: The Minister thanked almost everyone under the sun, but I suppose modesty would not allow him to thank or compliment himself. However, before we wrap up, it is important to say that he is due strong compliments and much thanks for getting this Bill over the line. A lot of work was done in the Department and the Parliament. I know, because the Minister and I were spokespeople in the...

Seanad: Agricultural and Food Supply Chain Bill 2022: Committee and Remaining Stages (4 Jul 2023)

Paul Daly: Now.

Seanad: Veterinary Medicinal Products, Medicated Feed and Fertilisers Regulation Bill 2023: Committee and Remaining Stages (28 Jun 2023)

Paul Daly: I wish to be associated with the Minister's comments. I thank him personally. This Bill has been mooted since the European regulation came in more than two years ago. There have been many discussions on it. As the Minister said, the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine had many meetings concerned with this issue, even prior to the pre-legislative scrutiny...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Consolidation in Horticultural Grower Numbers: Discussion (28 Jun 2023)

Paul Daly: I know my partner, Bernie, was at a meeting that Mr. Rushe was probably at because I have been hearing about the onion issue every weekend.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Consolidation in Horticultural Grower Numbers: Discussion (28 Jun 2023)

Paul Daly: Every weekend I go home and it is like a "Where in the World?" quiz. Peru was mentioned and I do not know where else was mentioned. If she is watching now, she will know I do not be listening to her but she can get reassurance from the fact that at least Mr. Rushe listened to her last night. I want to ask about the price and how it can be more competitive coming from Peru because Peru was...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Consolidation in Horticultural Grower Numbers: Discussion (28 Jun 2023)

Paul Daly: That is the question I am asking. That advice was available that time and I am talking about 40 years ago.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Consolidation in Horticultural Grower Numbers: Discussion (28 Jun 2023)

Paul Daly: Is there a potential solution to overcome that problem and have a similar Irish-based model if we could pull together all the heads Mr. McCormack mentioned earlier? I am trying to tease out a potential solution and I am not providing guarantees or saying it is going to happen but we have to be solution-driven.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Consolidation in Horticultural Grower Numbers: Discussion (28 Jun 2023)

Paul Daly: I know this is probably small scale in the big picture but I imagine there would be even fewer horticultural growers, and especially field crop growers, if it was not for farmer's markets selling the Irish product. Is that something we are not getting the maximum out of?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Consolidation in Horticultural Grower Numbers: Discussion (28 Jun 2023)

Paul Daly: Should it or could it be a bigger percentage? Is there any way it can be incentivised if we are looking for solutions? It is down to the initiative of individuals. We have a chap at home who comes into the square in the village every Saturday morning and he goes home with an empty van. There is not another one for seven or eight miles. Is it something we need to try to formulate or come...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Consolidation in Horticultural Grower Numbers: Discussion (28 Jun 2023)

Paul Daly: I appreciate that and I know of one instance of a pumpkin grower for the Halloween market and he just could not compete with the Dutch on price. I can never fathom how stuff can travel, with the cost of travel, and still be cheaper than we produce it.
